Teachers need to know the ways and methods to manage the disciplinary
problems that occur in the classroom. Teachers can place a rule imposed on pupils to
control and get the desired behaviour from them. Teachers need to know how to
control pupils in the class to have a good classroom management. Therefore, there
are several disciplinary management models that can be applied by teachers while
managing students discipline in the classroom. For my suggestion to overcome the
disciplinary problem of Rizal, I have chosen a model of classroom discipline which is
Kounin Group Management Model.
The model of my choice is the Kounin Group Management Model. This model
emphasizes teachers supervision towards the activities of their pupils in the
classroom. This model relates to the teacher's awareness and sensitivity in monitoring
the movement of his/her pupils in the classroom at all times. It is known as withitness
by Kounin. Teachers need to supervise the whole classroom and interact with all
students in order to achieve a good classroom control. Then, the teacher can also use
the overlapping technique which is a teacher's skill in controlling the classroom by
handling more than one situation. For example, Rizal likes to talk and disturbs his
friends when the teacher is teaching. So, the teacher can continue to ask another pupil
to read the given passage and at the same time the teacher should ask Rizal to stop
his misconduct. Additionally, there are also other methods Kounin has recommended
to teachers in controlling and supervising the classroom such as Ripple Effect or also
known as Wave Effect. The effect of the wave occurs when the teacher gives a
reprimand and action against a student who is doing a disciplinary and behavioural
offense but it also affects other students who are in the classroom. However, if a
teacher wants to use this Wave Effect, Kounin says that a teacher should be clear,
firm, and serious when reprimanding and acting.
The instruction of a teacher should be clear and not general. To handle Rizal as a
hyperactive pupil who like to walk around to his friend's seat, the teacher can give a
warning like, Rizal, sit in your place or I will pull back 1 of your star token.' If the student
does not hear the teacher's instructions and reprimand, the teacher should implement
the stated outcomes as it is necessary to show all students that the teacher is serious
about managing the classroom discipline. When teacher wants to give instructions,
he/she needs to display serious facial expression and strict voice so that the
disciplinary action can be carried out more effectively.
In order to ensure smooth teaching and learning, teachers should be smart in
managing the teaching and learning well. Teachers should not give a swirling
explanation and repeat unnecessary things until they are out of the teaching objective
of the day and cause the pupil not to understand the contents of the lesson described
by the teacher. Therefore, teachers need to know how to attract the attention of their
students in the classroom so that teachers can control them well. Among other things,
teachers need to ensure that their pupils always have tasks and should engage them
in classroom activities. For example, to attract the attention of Rizal towards the lesson,
the teacher needs to involve the students in class activities such as reading the given
passages, drawing together in groups, and help the teacher to attach a picture to the
flowchart. Then, the teacher can also call Rizal to give feedback, answer questions,
and give an explanation during the teaching and learning process.
Kounin also said that a lesson should take into account the interests, abilities, and
development of the students so that students will not easily get bored with the non-
varied teaching by the teacher. Boring lesson can cause students to do behavioural
problems in the classroom. So, in this case, the teacher can give Rizal interesting
activities like painting and colouring in order to control him from creating problems.
Moreover, the teacher can make Rizal busy by giving various learning activities like
group activities so that he can collaborate and share his ideas with his peers. However,
the teacher should ensure that the activity does not take too long to prevent him from
getting bored and thus there will be problems in the classrooms such as making noise
and disturbing friends.
This Kounin Group Management Model prioritizes the ability of teachers to manage
groups and manage the lessons in the classroom. Using this type of model, teachers
have the ability to handle more than one issue and condition at a time as in case study,
the smoothness of the activities carried out, keeping the focus of the students and
diversifying teaching techniques.
In a nutshell, I would suggest these two models in addressing the discipline
problems in the classroom which are very effective for managing the discipline of
pupils. So it would be the best models to make Rizal focus in studies and curb from
doing misconduct in the classroom.
