How To Use This Manual
Finding The Info rmation You Need
The removal and installation of parts are for the most part illustrated by l a rg e and clear i llustrations that should provide
the reader with visual aid i n understanding the major point for servicing .
The system illustrations are augmented by call outs whose numbers or letters indicate the order in which the parts should
be removed or insta l led .
The sequence of steps represented n u merically a re d ifferentiated from the ones represented alphabetically to notify
the reader that they m u st perform these steps separately.
The i l l u strations may contain symbols to indicate necessary service procedures and precautions that need to be taken .
Refer to the next page for the meaning of each symbo l .
Also in the i l l u stration is a chart that lists information such as the order in which the parts is removal/installed, the name
of the part , and some extra notes that may needed .
Step by step instructions a re provided to supplement the illustrations when datailed explanation of the procedu re is
necessary or i l l u strations alone would not suffice.
Service procedures requ i red before or after the procedu re described on that particular page, or i nspection/adjustment
procedures requ i red following the instal lation of parts, are described under the title Requisite Service .
Standard workshop procedures a n d knowledge covered in the Common Service Manual are abbreviated in this manual .

Source Of Emissions
The combustion process produces carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons. Control of hydrocarbons is very important because,
under certain conditions, they react to form photochemical smog when subjected to sunlight. Carbon monoxide does not
react in the same way,but it is toxic.
Honda Motor Co.,ltd. utilizes lean carburetor settings as well as other systems,to reduce carbon monoxide and hydrocarbons.
The crankcase emission control system routes crankcase emissions through the air cleaner and into the combustion chamber.

while the engine is stopped . When the engine is running and the evaporative emission purge control diaphragm valve i s open
fuel vapor in the evaporative emission canister is drawn into the engine through the carburetor. At the same time, the evaporative
emission carburetor air vent control valve is open and air is drawn into the carburetor through the valve .

If the engine must be running to do some work, make sure the area is well ventilated. Never run the engine in an
enclosed area. The exhaust contains poisonous carbon monoxide gas that can cause loss of consciousness and
may lead to death. Run the engine in an open area or with an exhaust evacuation system in an enclosed area.
Used engine oil may cause skin cancer if repeatedly left in contact with the skin for prolonged periods.
Although this is unlikely unless you handle used oil on a daily basis, it is still advisable to thoroughly wash your
hands with soap and water as soon as possible after handling used oil. KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.

Troubleshooting
E n g i n e top-en d problems usua l ly affect engine performa nce. These ca n be diagnosed by a com p ression or leak down

If performa nce is poor at low speeds, check for white smoke i n the cra n kcase breather tube. If there i s smoke i n the
tube, check for a seized piston ring.

Service i nformation
The battery gives off explosive gases; keep sparks, flames, and cigarettes away. Provide adequate ventilation
when charging or using the battery in an enclosed space.
The battery contains sulfuric acid (electrolyte). Contact with skin or eyes may cause severe burns. Wear protec
tive clothing and a face shield.
- If electrolyte gets on your skin, flush with water.
- If electrolyte gets in your eyes, flush with water for at least 1 5 minutes and call a physician immediately.
Electrolyte is poisonous. If swallowed, drink large quantities of water or milk and follow with milk of magnesia or
vegetable oil and call a physician.
KEEP OUT OF REACH OF CHILDREN.
Always tu rn off the i g n ition switch before d isco nnecti ng any electrica l com ponent.
CAUTION
Some electrical components may be damaged if terminals or connectors are connected or disconnected while
the ignition switch is ON and current is present.
For extended sto rage, rem ove the batte ry, g ive it a fu l l charge, and store it i n a cool , d ry space. For maxi m u m service
l ife, charge the stored battery eve ry two weeks.
For battery rem a i n i n g i n a stored m otorcycle, disconnect the negative batte ry ca ble fro m the batte ry termi n a l .
N OTE
The m a i ntena nce free battery m u st be replaced when it reaches the end of its service l ife.
CAUTION
The battery caps should not be removed. Attempting to remove the sealing caps from the cells may damage the
battery.
Battery can be dam aged if ove r charged or u ndercharged, or if left to d i sc h a rge for long periods. These same condi
tions contri b ute to shorte n i n g the " l ife spa n " of the batte ry. Even u nder normal use, batte ry performa nce dete rio rates
after 2-3 years.
Batte ry voltage may recover afte r battery charg i n g , but u nder heavy load, batte ry voltage wi l l d ro p q u ickly a n d even
tua l ly die out. For this reason, the charg i n g system is often suspected to be the pro b l e m . If one of the battery cel l s is
shorted a n d batte ry voltage does not i ncrease, the reg u lato r/rectifier suppl ies excess voltage to the battery. U nder
these conditions, the electrolyte level goes down qu ickly.
Befo re tro u bleshooti ng the charg i n g syste m , check the proper use a n d m a i ntena nce of the battery. Check if the bat
tery is frequently u n d e r heavy load, such as havi ng the head l ight a n d ta i l l i g ht ON fo r long periods of t i m e without rid
i n g the m otorcycle.
The battery wi l l self-d ischarge when the m otorcycle is not is use. For this reason, charge the battery every two weeks
to prevent su lfati on from form i n g .
F i l l i n g a new batte ry with e lectrolyte wi l l prod uce some voltage, but i n order to achieve its maxi m u m performa nce,
a lways charg e the battery. Also, the batte ry l ife is lengthened when it is i n itia l-charged.
When checki ng the charg i n g system , a lways fol l ow the steps i n the tro u b l eshooti ng fl ow c h a rt ( page 1 5-::S).

A halogen headlight bulb becomes very hot while the headlight is ON, and remains hot for a while after it is
turned OFF. Be sure to let it cool down before servicing.
Use an electric heating element and heated water/coolant mixture for the thermo sensor inspection. Keep all
flammable materials away from the burner. Wear protective clothing, insulated gloves and adequate eye protec
tion.
An improperly adjusted headlight may bling on-coming drivers, or it may fail to light the road for a safe distance.
