PRODUCTION WELL INSTAI-LATION, DESIGN AND TESTTi\G

,,1

2.1 Drilling Programme for the Production and Monitoring Wells

I P. T. Pratama Widja ivas awarded the contiact to undertake the drillhg and pump testing

ploglamme. Production wells PW1, PW3 and PW4 ard modtodng wells MWl, MW2 ard
MW3 were installed at the predetendned locations in the vicinify of "C" geolectric 1r'ansect

and adjacent to the Semamal River. Drilling at the proposed location of production well PW2
indicated that tie granite contact was intercepted at approximately 18 metres below gound

level and the hole was abandoned. As a replacement, production well PW4 was drilled
approximately 80 metres to the north of PWl. Production wells PWI and PW4 were drilled to

the west of the Semamal fuver whereas PW3 was drilled to east of the Semamal fuver.
Installation of the production wells was completed between the middle and end of Decomber
1995- Details ofthe production and monitoring well locations are sholvn Figure 2,

The distance separating the production wells in the wellfield is as follows:

. PW1 and PW3 - 53.6m,

. PW3 and PW4 - I 15m,
. PWl and PW4 - 79.6m.

Drilling Procedures and Ifftaltation ofthe Productiou Wells

Pdor to installation of the production wells, a 100mm diameter cored pilot hole was drilled at

each of the proposed production and monitoring well locations. The samples collected were
placed in core boxes and logged geologically. Samples of the water bearing mnes in the
proposed production wells were selected for sieve analysis.

Sertonire and polynrer drilling mu{ls were used

to stabilise the walls of the boreholes
during
diliing. The drill muds were recirculated in an above ground
tanl( conslructed of.lhree ply
*-cc{i ", at each ofthe production well locations.

T'ire production bores were drilled using a mud rotary drilting g to a maximur[
depth of 30
oelres below ground level (approximatery 3.0m into
the gruite), at 250 nrn diameter. A
to0rnm dimeler sreel casing was installed to approximately
I.0m below g.o*d tar"t. Th" top
of the steel casilg extended to approximately l.Om
above grouDd level. Three l60lnm dianeter
production wells were hstalled into the
holes drilled, with the screened sections
being located
adjacent to the water bearing zones. The top
of the production well casings were
approximately l.0m above ground level during
the pump testing ptogranme and were
subsequendy incrcased to l.5m above ground
level on completion of the purnp testing
p.ograrnme. The existing top ofthe casing levels
have been consaucted above flood ievels
noted by locals living in &e area. However,
the information supplied is anecdotal and no

diameter) were used for the prcduction
wells. The slot size openings were determined Aom
tle sieve analysis results and any
adjushne[ts that werc necessary were carried
out on site. Locally obtained casing (l60nm
dianeter) and couplings were used for the unscreened
sectiom ofthe wens. wer guides were
attached above and below each of the
scleelled sections to cenkalise the slotted
zones, for
prcper g.avel pack emplacement. betails
of the desigt of production wells pV/I. pW3 and
PW4 are shown in Figues 3, 4 and 5, respectively.

A 50 mm diameter slotted screen and casing wEs

installed into each of the monitoring wells
MWl, MW2, and MW3. The slotted inlervals of the monitorirg
wells were inse ed adjacent to
the sarne water bearing zones as the prcduction wells.
