POSITIONS -
Body position:
- back not curved/arched, not rigid, but straight
- shoulders back, down and relaxed
- arms out from side of body a bit and held up a bit (by shoulders), elbows facing outward a bit
- knees not rigid, very slightly bent (relaxed) - if too bent thigh muscles get over-strained
- generally body is a bit squashed down (not tall and erect).
- coja aire - means stretch out stomach/chest (thrust chest out) vs
quita aire- means tighten/compress stomach muscles inward (scrunch tog stomach).
Its not like pelvic rotate (as in belly dancing) - is more about muscles in abdomen working
vs pelvis tilting down or up (to tuck in bum, or stick out bum) - sort of...
Note: stomach moves (with breathing) not visible - dont hunch, or arch back when doing it.
Arm/hand positions:
- arms kind of 2-dimensional (hand, elbow.. like kung fu posn!)
- arm across front - out front, level, slightly curved/arced towards body, hand an extension of arm,
like a balcony.
- generally:
- shoulders always relaxed/down and back;
remember arms move w/shldr as one unit (not from shldr joint)
- arms always arced (this: not: )
and tilted forward slightly; theyre turned inwards.
Sort of like body-builder pose: outer side of arm is fwd (back of hand/up. arm faces front).
17-Sep-17 Flamenco Dance Lessons Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun 2011 3
- if bent, elbow is leading
- hands (forearms) are also usually below the elbow; bent 90 at wrist when turning.
- if you flick hands/arms up or out to side or down.. only go as far as level with body, not further
back.
- bolsillo(=like in front jeans pocket) - arm is lowered, hand is at front-side of lower body, just
overlapping body (near groin/trouser pocket); elbow pointing outward to side, back of arm facing
front.
- televisin - one arm across body at about waistline height,
- other above & framing head (like wrapping yourself up).
MOVEMENTS (generally) -
- Do movements and combinations as you wish. You are free (not like ballet)!
- feet apart a bit, not beyond hip bones width. Knees slightly bent.
- shoulders relaxed (back & down), shoulder is back (in line with your back).
- chest is open (like shoulders spread out to sides), and almost thrust forward
- dont bounce up and down (vertically). Keep all your dancing on one level in all movements.
- head - turn to face direction arm is moving; or look across over an extended arm (e.g. in front).
- arms geny - moves as a unit from the centre point on your back between the shoulder blades
(not as if connected at shoulder joint!)
- move whole arm as if its a big arc/bow
- lead with elbow - on raising at sides, in front
- when raise to sides, usually lead with back of hands facing you (palms outwards), elbows
high. (I think I get it finally! - 14 April - from her videos)
- hands - when done around your head, will look like youre pretending to talk on cellphone!
- always have a space between your fingers when turning - like a mariposa (butterfly)!
- generally move the hands: fingers together, hand straight;
when do the circle, is sort of snappily flick down to wrist/towards the arm movement
(and could start the movement with back of hand first bent twds forearm i.e. 90).
- Exception: Men - dont do so many rotations, and keep fingers closer tog on rotations.
- steps/stamps - knees bent a bit, weight down in bum;
- force/momentum of foot comes in from behind (knee is bent, foot comes in from behind),
NOT from knee rising, and force coming down from above.
Movements - HAND circles: #1 - Practice this
- you rotate your entire wrist
- arms like holding a bch ball, shoulders down/back, palms facing you (in line w/abdom not high
up, then move out from body), elbows out (keep them out and immobile).
a) inward circle: (R hand initially counter-clockwise)
= Entrar (twds you - enter the circle), Salir (exit sidewds, wrists/hands 90), Subir (face upwds)
On entrar, lead inward with baby finger, others follow to closed hand (fingers come tog
until thumb wraps around index finger middle joint - fingers:bk of hand 90);
on salir, fingers in a closed hand, twisting wrist (& fingers) outward;
on subir, gradually open hand outward & upward again with baby finger, others follow til
straight.
When not turning, is flat and straight (up/out, or bend backwards towards forearm);
when beginning turn, start it with a snappy flick of hand to bent posn (esp if outward circle)
- she calls it flicking like a pinball machine;
HIP MOVEMENTS -
- Do a hip circle towards outside or towards inside ...
on the foot thats extended/out (lean into extended foot) e.g. out to side or to front.
Note (position): Dont swing hips out wide, and keep hips facing forward.
- Hips do a circle outward (to side), then around inward as you compress your stomach
- dont transfer weight to forward foot - move hips that way only
Hip step: (like belly dancing stomach roll) #3,4 - PRACTICE THIS
- 1 Step on R toe (quite far) forward, thrust R hip fwd/side over toe. (Coja aire brthe in; chest
open)
2 Step on L foot (in place), rock R hip back to ctr. (Quita aire tighten stom musc.)
3 Step on R toe beside L.
4 Pause. (chg weight to R, rock hips to R) Do the reverse (4 counts) - L toe forward
Arms: (R hand at R pocket - front hip joint, near body); body slightly leaning backwards
1,2 L arm (oppos to extended leg) circles back low to top front (inward hand circles)
3,4 L arm drops down front ^ is cruzando
DEFINITELY - thrust hip fwd/side? (like pelvic thrust) on when step forward;
- just before fwd thrust, have a bit of a side hip thrust
- can also be like a hip thrust to side when step on it.
FOOTWORK -
Note: When doing stamps quickly, all the work is in lower legs; dont move the hips, no bouncg.
Video 8486
Toe-heel step:
- stamp/step firmly on ball of foot (not just on the toes, as in ballet!) toe planta/ tee
with toes 90 to rest of foot, foot straight in line with lower leg. (exaggerated/extreme)
(Or get the effect with just bending foot = squeezing calf muscle)
- then bring heel down firmly (in place) - dont move the foot. heel tacn / ko
Repeat with the other foot.
If both toe-heel steps done with feet together, place toe in line with (beside toes of) other foot.
Stamping:
- weight is on (L) foot: lift ( R) foot up behind (bend/hinge from knee), Video 8487
strike it solidly on ground, flat (whole foot), close to (L) foot.
- keep knees fixed (dont raise knee up/forward).
- NO hip movement - its all done with the lower leg,
especially when its fast (not like Latin dancing, where its all from the hips).
Moving fwd/back with one lifted leg (sostenido - delayed):
- have stomach tight; body facing forward.
Moving bkwd:
- 1 (on L) Lift R foot in front, bent knee, toe pointed (lift chest a bit)
& Pause as move bkwd
a Step back on R, bending L knee (as in a dip), then lift L foot fwd, bent knee, toe pointed.
2 Step back on L..
Repeat.
Moving fwd:
- as above but bent leg comes up to meet other (beside the calf), from behind
1 (on L) Step R fwd on bent knee (lift chest a bit)
& Lift L foot behind but near R calf,
a Pause as move fwd
2 Step on L fwd..
Repeat.
Arms: Both do circles (changing with each lift step) - first beside hips; then circle tog in front to
shldr height and bk dn (by sides but behind almost); then full round circle coming dn ctr
front.
Moving in a circle to R/L:
- Step R to R Straight arms circle at shoulder height both to R (with L elbow bent across body).
Step L to L Straight arms cross body at shoulder heightt to L (with R elbow bent across body).
Can repeat.
- or above, then into a turn:
Step again R to R, then turning to R, Step L 180 and Step R, to R (completing circle on R to R).
Arms: stay extended outwards and end crossing body as above.
Reverse to circle to the L.
