Engineering Mid-Semester Examination Year 3, Semester | (2016) CE3821 — Geotechnical Engineering III Duration: 1 Hour August 2016 Instructions to Candidates: © This is a closed book examination * Answer both the questions. © Marks allocated for different sections are indicated. |. Briefly describe the following methods of soil improvement, clearly indicating the underlying principle behind each method, advantages and disadvantages if any, and their field implementation procedures. (a) Precompression (U5 marks) (b) Installation of vertical drains (15 marks) (©) Soil reinforcement (15 marks) 2. (a) Define the Factor of safety with respect to cohesion, friction, and strength, related to analysis of stability of slopes (10 marks) (b) A cutting, 5 m deep, is to be made in a uniform clay of unit weight 17.5 kN/ m’, undrained angle of internal friction 10° and undrained cohesion 35 kN/m’. If the sides are vertical and unsupported, and if the seepage and drawdown are ignored, determine (i) the Factor of safety with respect to cohesion, assuming friction is fully mobilized, (15 marks) and (i) the cohesion required to be mobilized to give the same factor of safety with respect to cohesion as well as friction. (30 marks) Taylor's stability numbers for a vertical slope are Mobilized Angle of internal friction (deg) [0 [5 10 15 Stability Number 0261 [0.239 [0.218 [0.199
