Tutorial 2

1. Define the term Thermodynamics. Give some examples of its application.

2. Differentiate between system and surrounding. Sketch a diagram to show the relationships.

3. Describe in details about open system, closed system and isolated system. Give examples for
each of them.

4. What is energy? State the units that are commonly used in chemistry.

5. Differentiate between work and heat in chemistry. State the sign conventions for work and
heat and give examples.

6. Calculate the work done when a gas is expanded from 250 dm 3 to 645 dm3 by an external

7. A gas is compressed into 3.5 L container against a constant pressure of 1 atm at 25C. How much
work is done on the gas by the surroundings (in joules)?

8. Describe the different types of energy.

9. Discuss in details about these terms; isochoric process, isobaric process, adiabatic process
and isothermal process.

10. State the First Law of Thermodynamics. Give the mathematical statement of this law.

11. Define endothermic process and exothermic process.

12. A balloon is heated by adding 1135 J of heat. It expands, doing 538 J of work on the
atmosphere. Calculate the change in internal energy of the system.

13. A sample of liquid propane weighing 7.15 g was burned in a bomb calorimeter. The observed
temperature rise was from 23C to 29.4C. Calculate the U for the combustion of 1 mole of
liquid propane. (Mr propane = 44.1 g/mol; heat capacity of propane = 16.72 J/K)

14. A vessel containing 2.5 kg of water at 25C is heated until it boils. Calculate how much heat is
supplied to boil the water. (Assume : molar heat capacity of water; C m = 75.4 J K-1 mol-1)
