There are many ideas I would like to see on these pages, and I hope that all the players of all RL products can share their optional rules, scenarios and ideas with Paul and me. ‘You may very well ask, “What is a Line Editor, anyway?” As Line Editor, I have several responsibilities to discharge. Foremost, I must encourage, cajole, and, yes, even bribe enthusiasts of RL to write game product. This includes updates to the RL universe, both technical and historical, scenarios, sourcebooks, new games, adventures, and anything else that you think is the best thing for RL. I act as editor and developer of your products. I will bound you, or praise you, depending on whether you are late or not. I willl ensure that your concepts and stories fit into the current timeline and are appropriate for and consistent with the RL family of products 1 will edit your work to ensure that the use of english is correct, the prose is structured logically and the final product is readable, ‘As developer, I am also responsible for consulting with Nightshift Games RENEGADE TRANSMISSIONS Paul Lidberg on the direction that the Renegade Legion product line and universe must take to be successful. Without your ideas and writings, 1 cannot do this effectively, so get those ideas on paper and send a proposal to me by regular mail and/or electronic mail ‘Already, we have several Projects in the works since Nightshift. Games assumed command of the RL line. Due to be completed and out late this summer is Renegade Legion: The Art of War. This is the combined rule set for Centurion, Interceptor and Leviathan. Since Centurion 2nd Edition and the Centurion Technical Update have already been done, there will not be much new to add. Interceptor is due for several rule changes and this part of RL:AOW will reflect new movement options, weapons, vehicle status charts similar to Centurion and a host of other additions Fundamentally, however, Interceptor will not change appreciably. Leviathan is another story. Most who have played Leviathan probably have their pet peeves. Well, Leviathan will have major revisions to attempt to remove the problem areas without sacrificing all the previous Leviathan work published to date. This may not bbe completely achieved, but the modifications to ship construction, weaponry, turret mechanics, and Interceptor integration should make the rewrite very enjoyable. Due by November or BY DALE MAGTERS December is the anthology, Ides of March. I can’t say too much about the stories, except that the title is significant. The Ides of March extends the timeline of the RL universe forward from the novels done by Peter Rice and takes the RL universe into unsettled territory. Phalanx is a man-to-man ‘combat game designed for use within the RL universe. You will be able to play squad to squad actions on the Centurion battlefield, within Legionnaire settings and aboard Leviathan ships-of-the-line. This fast paced, tactical board game is due early in the first quarter of 1995, After that, there are some other developments I can not discuss (you know; it's that “‘need-to-know"” thing). A strategic boardgame is coming up. Also, a proposal for the rewrite of Legionnaire is in the works but nothing is definite As for future articles to appear in Renegade Transmissions, I am currently working on some Electronic Warfare rules that just might make it here first and I have errata and addenda for Centurion Technical Update that was published in 1992. Discussions of tactics in all of the games will be another favourite of mine. If you want to write for Nightshift Games and Renegade Legion, put your ideas on paper (see the ‘Submission Guidelines) and send them to me. Use one blank line between paragraphs and between section headings and lead paragraphs. 3) Always spell check your documents, Now get to work! RENEGADE TRANSMISSIONS INTERCEPTOR Mintatures Movement System Developed by Sam Lewis, and the staff at FASA. [The following is an optional system for playing INTERCEPTOR in true ‘miniatures style, without the hex map. These rules are unofficial, but still fun. We invite your comments.) ‘The movement system in INTERCEPTOR is a compromise which does not fully reflect what space combat is like. Space is represented as being only two dimensional, but the majority of players seem to fight on a plane anyway (even if they have 3D rules), so that is not a major problem from a simulation standpoint. It is the use of the hex grid to regulate movement that causes the biggest simulation problem. The hex grid imposes cchunkiness to movement, ic. you can only move in six directions, and you get dead zones in the coverage of turreted weapons (I have told people that turret’s traversing mechanism only has 6 teeth in its gears). The map grain has an impact on tactics. I am not advocating making the game too open, however I have developed a movement system for miniature use that really gives your players a better feel for space combat. Essentially, it 6 is a vector movement system without all of the hassles of figuring out sine, cosine, and the like, INITIATIVE Initiative is determined by using the SOT and adding 1410, with low initiative moving before high initiative. The tailing rule can also be used. MAPBOARD ‘There is no longer a hex grid imposed on the playing surface. Movement is done through the use of rulers with 1 inch equal to 15 kilometers The time period for a tum is reduced to 30 seconds. PLAYING PIECE Use a six sided plastic base. Make sure that the miniature is glued to the post, and that the post can be tumed inside of the base. Paint a red arrow though the center of one of the base’s arcs. This arrow will be used to designate the fighter’s Heading. MOVEMENT Disregard the Facing and Heading, Thrust and Heading Change sections of the nules. Movement should be handled in the following, manner. NEW TERMS FOR FIGHTERS HEADING The ship’s heading indicates which direction the ship is traveling. For miniature play, this is represented by the direction that the red arrow on the base of the miniature is pointing. This heading can be changed during the movement phase by placing the fighter inside of its mancuver sphere (ee below) and realigning the fighter’s heading arrow based on its actual direction of movement. VELOCITY The velocity of the ship is kept track of like in INTERCEPTOR, but in half inch segments. Changes in velocity are only the result of where in its maneuver sphere the fighter is placed (see below). 1 point of velocity translates to 1 inch of ‘movement on the board. VECTOR The Vector of a fighter is a function of its current location, Heading, and Velocity. It has a direction the same as its Heading, and a length equal to its Thrust, and starts at the Nightshift Games ship's current position. Thus if ‘a ship was heading 345 degrees with a Velocity of 5, its Vector would start at its current location, head off at 345 degrees, and have a length of 5. THRUST Each ship has a specified Thrust rating. This Thrust rating indicates the size of the Maneuver sphere that the ship has, with each point of Thrust equal to 1/2 of an inch in radius. Thus a ship with a Thrust of 4 has a Maneuver Sphere with a radius of 2 inches. MOVEMENT To move a fighter, simply lay a ruler down along the fighter's heading, starting at the fighter’s current location, Place the center of the fighter’s Nightshift Games RENEGADE TRANSMISSIONS Maneuver sphere at a distance equal to its current Velocity. ‘The fighter can be placed anywhere inside the maneuver sphere. The player then should measure the distance from the starting point to the ending point and round to the nearest half inch. This becomes the fighter's new Velocity. The Heading arrow should be then aligned with the direction the fighter took to get to its current position FACING After movement, a fighter an point towards any of the six sides of the base at no Thrust cost. Simply rotate the fighter on its base and aline it to one of the six sides. This also defines the firing arc of all of the fighter’s forward mounted weapons. The turret should also be aligned, but its direction is secretly written down, using the heading as 1 and working clockwise around to 6 SOT SOT is as normal, but rather than using a mancuver template equal to the thrust of the ship the player should use ‘one only the size of his SOT rating. If the player goes beyond his SOT, he should roll to see if he has lost control of the fighter. Ifa player goes SOC, he is randomly placed in the Maneuver sphere that he attempted to go into. (We roll a 1d6 for direction off of the six sided base and an appropriate die for length along that direction). His facing is his Heading, COMBAT Combat is as normal, but the firing arcs are a 60 degree arc off of the facing of the fighter, and the angle of attack is calculated off of the target fighter’s Heading, not its facing. Use the base as the hex to determine the side hit, angle of attack, and so forth. Range is I inch to the INTERCEPTOR hex. MISSILES Missiles are still a pain. They are locked on and fired as normal. A fired missile is placed one half inch in front of the firing ship and has the ship's current Velocity and Heading (standard exception for TGMs). Next tum, the missile is moved just like a normal ship, but after all other ships have moved. Standard restrictions apply, except that now the missiles can speed up or slow down. If the missile’s Maneuver sphere contains the target ship then the target ship hhas been hit, and the missile attack is resolved as normal. IN CLOSING The above rules are incomplete and rough. Players are encouraged to experiment with these, see what works best for them and their group, and let us know what you think. If we get enough response, we might consider an expanded version of these rules for a future issue, or maybe even a product of its own, RENEGADE TRANSMISSIONS The following stores have been designated Official playtest sites. TOP SECRET - EYES ONLY = Lictor ISD, 2.11.6831) History Descended from Moorish colonists, the Sandworlders have settled primarily in a large system, and the surrounding area (roughly the size of a county). They were only discovered about a century ago and they quickly came into conflict with the Terran Overlord Government Diplomatic ties were broken after only a few years, and subsequent encounters have only resulted in TOG casualties. The Sandworlders and the Commonwealth have an unwritten truce that may yet ‘tum into an alliance. Military ‘The Shocktrooper's forces are estimated at roughly 8500 legions. Most are powerful and skilled, equivalent to TOG Strike Legions, some even ‘equivalent to Praetorian units. There is compelling evidence, however, that the Sandworlders may have twice that many legions. Unfortunately, concrete ‘evidence has not been found. ‘Several TOG legions lie in ruins and several minor TOG planets have been lost to the Sandworld —Shocktroopers. Caesar believes them to be a defeatable enemy, and has sent 3,500 more legions to add to the 5,500 already there, with plans on sending about 8,000 more. He wants to show that TOG legions can still win a war, and the Sandworlders are to be his example. ‘An alliance between the Commonwealth and the Sandworlders could deféat his plans and open a new front in the war. Land Forces Since the majority of the Sandworlder's battles have been fought (and won) on barren planets, their vehicles differ drastically from TOG or Commonwealth vehicles. Few of their vehicles have digging charges (which don’t work in sand), most use heavy Gauss cannons, and they use much less infantry than cither the ‘TOG or the Commonwealth. The operations of Shocktrooper forces are, therefore, different. In combat they are fast and fierce. On attack, their combination of devastating firepqwer, strong armor, and high speed overwhelms TOG armor. On defense, heavy crossfires and strong counterattacks drive TOG commanders insane. And at all times, enemy armor is punished for going to ground. Shocktrooper commanders prefer to get as close as possible to the enemy in order to use their heavy anti-tank firepower (which tends to be shorter-ranged than TOG's). Because they move constantly, Shocktrooper gravtanks can shift quickly to new areas of RENEGADE TRANSMISSIONS FALLING STAR AVATAR Class: Heavy Grav APC Troopship Class: ‘Medium Grav Tank Cost: 2,204,100 Cost 2,015,550, attack, If a TOG tank gets with lots of terrain, Dervish: a light tank. It has an engineering attachment, which allows it to create clear pathways through both minefields and trees, but it has no digging cannons. This APC carries 9 (usually all with missiles). The purpose of the infantry is to be spread out in an area, and when a target is painted, to all fire indirect at that target. This short-range artillery support helps Shock- trooper defensive operations immensely. The Falling Star can be used as a command center or as an anti-tank stop-gap unit. Even without heavy Gauss guns or Lasers, it can punch sizable holes in armor with its missiles. SPACE SHIPS Interceptors The Sandworlders have developed many different types of powerful fighters. They use fighters in almost every type of operation, including atmospheric combat, land battle support (strafing and bombing), and open space conflict. This occasionally results in a shorter-ranged fleet than either TOG or Renegade/ Commonwealth navies, but the Sandworlders don’t have to Protect or attack large sectors either. Few of their ships have much non-combat cargo, and most are built purely for space (that is, practically none can go planetside). With the large amount of fighters the Sandworlders have, it is only natural that they have many carriers. Some of the largest carriers ever built are Sandworld craft (including the homeworld battleship carrier Swarmlord, the largest carrier ever). They can launch massive attacks against enemy fleets, The large quantities of fighters makes up for the lack of surface-going ships, most Sandworld naval officers feel. Other capital ships rely heavily on maneuverability and raw firepower to win battles, mainly Spinal Mounts. While enemy ships are tangled up with whole fighter groups, the capital ships maneuver to unleash their crowbars, tearing the opposing ships apart.
