Development Goals, linking it to the Finnish context, in
addition to giving background and empirical data on
sustainability, and the state of the world at present
BUILDING ASTRATEGY FOR
SUSTAINABILITY AS BUSINESS
We have been working on a Sustainability Strategy that may drive the organisation for
the next 3 years.
We are building a vision, and you must be part of helping to form the strategy.

Breakdown of this interactive section:

-Vision - explaining the Sustainability as Business Concept
- Group work: Pitch your Sustainability Offering

Building a Strategy for Sustainability as Business

Aim: To make a Sustainability offering to your customer

Your offer must demonstrate:

- A good grasp of the problem, and recognise the sustainability challenge/opportunity
- How this solution will help address the sustainability challenge they face
- How the GIS solution addresses the sustainability challenge, but also offers new
ventures of opportunity
Now, it's time for coffee!!
GROUP WORK:
INNOVATE, STRATEGISE

FUN AND PROBLEM SOLVE

FORM GROUPS - MAX 6, CROSS-SECTORAL WITH VARYING EXPERIENCE.
YOU HAVE 1.5 HOURS

TIME,
OUTCOME: USING YOUR CASE STUDY PACK,CREATE A SHORT STRATEGY-PITCH FOR THE
CLIENT, ADDRESSING THEIR SUSTAINABILITY CHALLENGE,MAKE YOUR SOLUTION
RELEVANT TO THEIR BUSINESS GOALS/ VISION.
THESOLUTION IS GIS FOCUSED,THE ONUS IS ON APPLIED GIS SUSTAINABILITY SOLUTIONS.
AT THE END, YOU WILL HAVE 5 MINUTES TO PRESENT YOUR PITCH TO THE GROUP.

SIP
THEBEST GROUP GETS A PRIZE..

EXTRA: MAP WHERE YOUR STRENGTHS AND WEAKNESSES ARE IN ADDRESSING THE
CHALLENGE. WHAT COMPETENCIES DO YOU ALREADY HAVE, AND WHICH NEED TO BE
DEVELOPED FURTHER? THIS WILL SERVE FOR FUTURE WORK AND DEVELOPMENT.

TIME USE DIFFERENT PROBLEM SOLVING AND ANALYSIS TOOLS - WE SUGGEST SIP, BUT FEEL
FREE TO USE OTHERS - MORE INFO IN THE CASE STUDY PACK.

N.B. THE FOCUS IS NOT THE TECHNOLOGY, BUT THE APPLICABILITY OF THE TECHNOLOGY
TO ADDRESS THE CLIENT'SPROBLEM. THE OFFER MUST HAVE THE CUSTOMER NEED AT
THE CENTRE
Part 1 Mapping the Problem
Using the sustainability compass, you must map out your problem:
- What are the key trends, issues, challenges for your client?
- What data is currently available to understand this?
These indicators must be mapped in a way to generally help us understand what is
'happening at the moment'

Tool to be used: The Sustainability Compass developed by AtKisson Group

Part 2 Systems Thinking and SIP

Using the indicators identified in the problem mapping

section, it is now time to create a systems map.

Creating a systems map using SIP Problem Solving Tools:

How is everything related?Interrelated?
What effect does one thing have on the other?
What is the bigger picture of the sustainability challenge?
What are the causes? Are there solutions?
Here you are able to identify the place of greatest
potential impact for the GIS technology (leverage point).
You are also able to identify it's indirect positive impact.

Part 3 SIP and Forming your Offer

By this stage you should:

1. Fully understand the sustainability challenge

2. Understand the 'bigger picture' (threats, opportunities,

interrelations, and dynamics) of the system e.g. the
sustainability challenge and its relation to your client.

3. Have identified where GIS could 'intervene' to help

resolve an aspect (not all) the sustainability challenge
Now your challenge is to formulate your offer!
Part 3 Make me an offer I can't refuse

Challenge: 5minute Pitch to sell your Sustainability

solution to the room. Create a vision that merges
sustainability benefits and business drivers.
Sustainability Solution Using Applied GIS
Your offer must include:
- A clear grasp of the problem
- An appreciation for how the sustainability problem may
effect various aspects of the client's organisation, and
wider society
- A GIS solution to the problem, with an explanation as to
how the solution addresses the problem now, and
benefits drawn from it...
Thankyou!
