LEARNING JOURNAL

Date: 28/8/17
Goals/Questions: Research about background information,
understand the revolution.
Notes: Colonies mobilized and revolted against the Great Britain
because of taxation issue. After, those colonies became the USA.
- The citizens of these colonies were beginning to get tired of the
British rule.
- People see the change in the American government and society a
real Revolution, but the Revolution is essentially an economic one.
- The main reason the colonies started rebelling against 'mother
England' was the taxation issue. The colonies debated England's
legal power to tax them and, furthermore, did not wish to be taxed
without representation.
- Taxation without representation

Reflection: I researched about the colonization and causes of
American revolution, just its background. I could be able to understand
the overall concepts, but for other important information or details, my
group and I havent completed researching and connecting them yet.
Date: 29/8/17
Goals/Questions: Be able to assign roles to group mates, finish up
with the research about background information
Notes: Minnie will be the writer( actual writer ), The rest of us will help
her figure out the story, and lastly, I will finish it by layouting and
decorating the work.
- In December 1773, the Boston Tea Party occurred as a reaction to
the hated Tea Act of earlier that year.
- In 1774, the First Continental Congress met and formed an
'Association,'
- Leadership and spurred new local organizations to end royal
authority were assumed.
- Because of the influence of these Associations, many people joined
the movement, and collection of supplies and mobilization of troops
began to take place.
- However, not everyone favored the revolutionary movement.
- Not everyone who joined used violence.
- A Congress of the colonies would coordinate and control the
revolutionary movement

Reflection: We finalized our decisions on roles of writing and further
researching. As we finished researching about the revolution, were
going to start planing the storys timeline next class, also, choose main
characters and situations that we want to include in our story.
Date: 30/8/17
Goals/Questions: List out all of the materials that will be used in our
fiction
Notes: John Locke will be our main character, John Locke came up
with his idea first, about freedom, together with American having
problems with taxation. Lockenism is about Social contract, right and
freedom, roles of government.
- He defended the claim that men are by nature free and equal as part
of the justification for understanding legitimate political government
as the result of a social contract.
- He argued that people have rights, such as the right to life, liberty,
and property, that have a foundation independent of the laws of any
particular society.
- He believed that people transfer some of their rights to the
government in order to better ensure the stable, comfortable
enjoyment of their lives, liberty, and property.
- His analysis begins with individuals in a state of nature where they
are not subject to a common legitimate authority with the power to
legislate or adjudicate disputes.

Reflection: I understand more about the differences between important
people and their significance ideologies. However, we didnt complete
our goal today, weve done with John Lockes part, but not for Voltaires,
and also for the revolution. We couldnt research about the particular
events as we planned.
Date: 5/9/17
Goals/Questions: Be able to connect information to specific period of
the revolution and finalize the storys timeline
Notes: Introduce John Locke => Current situation => Idea: Rationalism
=> Causes of revolution: colonization => Voltaires idea => Revolution:
Boston tea party => Johns feeling => End => Reflect to ideas (X
colonization) => Effects
- Lead-in to War = British troops occupy Boston (to enforce the
Townshend duties: taxes on paint, paper, tea, etc.), Committees of
Correspondence established throughout the colonies to coordinate
American response to British colonial policy, Britain tries to intimidate
Massachusetts.
- Independence Declared = First shots of the war were fired at
Massachusetts, British form an alliance (people seek their freedom),
America declares its independence (Second Continental Congress),
- During the war/ Aftermath = Loyalists leave America (evacuation),
Treaty of Paris ends state of war (ratifies the independence of the 13
North American states), U.S. Constitution

revwar/about_the_revolution/timeline_of_events.html
Reflection: Our group was be able to finish the actual timeline for our
fiction, and also made understandings about the revolutions events
and their relations, so we did complete our goal. We were planing to
divide the timelines part to each members and do more research about
event details.
Date: 6/9/17
Goals/Questions: Understand Voltaires ideas and works, relate to
revolution
Notes: Voltaire was inspired by John Locke to develop his ideas. His
ideas were mainly about civil liberties, freedom of religion and free
trade, which somehow connected to Lockes, Hobbess and
Rousseaus.
- He was a French philosopher.
- He was an out spoken supporter of social reform, despite the strict
censorship laws and harsh penalties of the period.
- His works and ideas influenced important thinkers of both the
American and French Revolutions.
- He had trouble with the French authorities for his energetic attacks on
the government and the Catholic Church.
- He was exiled and spent almost three years in England.
- The experience greatly influenced his ideas and experiences, and he
was particularly impressed by Britain's constitutional monarchy, its
support of the freedoms of speech and religion, as well as the
philosophy of John Locke.
- After he returned to Paris, he published his views on British
government, and again, second exile.

www.philosophybasics.com/philosophers_voltaire.html
Reflection: We was be able to understand the significances of
Voltaires ideas to Lockes, and how they related to each other and the
revolution. We knew how experience of each person can affect their
thoughts and perspective, after we researched about Voltaires and
Lockes early life. In the next meeting, we hope that we can finally start
drafting the real product.

Date: 7/9/17
Goals/Questions: Start drafting the real story
Notes: First, were gonna introduce where the revolution took place,
and refers back to John Lockes home country(England). Then, were
gonna introduce Lockes important: how people see him, and his
background.
- His works lie at the foundation of modern philosophical empiricism
and political liberalism.
- He was born on August 29, 1632, in England.
- He studied medicine at the University of Oxford.
- He became a highly influential philosopher, writing about such topics
as political philosophy, epistemology, and education.
- He met Lord Ashley, who was to become Earl of Shaftsbury and later
influence his life.

Reflection: We knew what were gonna start of by, so we decided to
research more, about John Lockes biography, so we can be able to
introduce him to the readers. Then, Weve begun drafting, but that was
less than we expected. We took more time than we thought to write.
Were looking forward to finish more than half of our story this week. Ive
found a piece of information, that seems to be really important, about
Earl of Shaftsbury, and I think Ill research more further later.
Date: 8/9/17
Goals/Questions: Research more about relationship between Locke
and Shaftsbury
Notes: They were friends, later Locke followed his friend and started
his new interests and career, then he stepped into politics. So, we can
say that Shaftsbury is Lockes turning point from medical life to political
philosophy life.
- He met Lord Ashley early in his medical studies at Oxford.
- Shaftsbury persuaded Locke to move to London and become his
personal physician.
- He assisted in his business and political matters.
- After Shaftsbury was made chancellor, Locke became his secretary
of presentations, and he influenced Lockes professional career and
political thoughts.
- As one of the founders of the Whig party, which pushed for
constitutional monarchism and stood in opposition to the dominant
Tories, Shaftsbury imparted an outlook on rule and government that
never left Locke.

Reflection: Ive finished researching and answering my yesterday
concerns and doubts. I was be able to understand how John Locke
turned out to be one of the great philosopher. I think Ill present my
research to my group mates, so we might include this part of Lockes
life into our fiction too.
