Egg Lab

Hypothesis: If you place an egg in various liquids, then the egg will increase or decrease in
mass based on if the liquid is hypotonic or hypertonic.
Conclusions:
1. When the egg was placed in vinegar, the water molecules moved in the egg. The
data shows this because we observed that the egg was bigger on the 4th day. Also, from
day 1 to day 4 the mass of the egg increased 29.5 grams and the remaining volume was
130 mL, so some of the liquid did move into the cell. Based on the data, it was a
hypotonic solution since there were less mL remaining in the beaker after we took the
egg out.

2. When the egg was placed in syrup, the water molecules moved out of the egg. The
data shows this because we observed that the egg was smaller on the 5th day.
Also, from day 4 to day 5 the mass of the egg decreased from 95.3 grams to 60.1
grams so in total it decreased 35.2 grams, and the remaining volume was 225 mL
while the volume that was added was 200 mL, so some of the liquid did move
out of the cell. Based on the data, it was a hypertonic solution since there were
more mL remaining in the beaker after the egg was taken out of the beaker.

3. There was more volume remaining in the beaker because more of the
liquid moved out of the egg. The data shows this because from day 4 to day 5 the
eggs mass decreased which left more of the liquid in the beaker. The egg looked smaller
because syrup is a hypertonic solution.

4. When the egg was placed in water after being removed from the syrup, the water
moved in the egg. The data shows this because we observed that the egg looked bigger.
Also from day 5 to 6, the mass of the egg went from 60.1 grams to 98.4 grams, so the
eggs mass increased 38.3 grams. The volume remaining in the beaker was 150 mL.
Based on the data, it was a hypotonic solution since there were less mL remaining in the
beaker after the egg was taken out.

Yes, our hypothesis was validated because the egg did both increase and decrease in its mass
based on if the solution was hypotonic or hypertonic. In vinegar, the liquid moved into the egg,
in syrup the liquid moved out of the cell, and in distilled water the liquid moved into the egg.
