Background: Naomi Shihab Nye was born in the state of Missouri in 1952 to a Palestinian father and an
American mother. She still has family in the Middle East, and her poetry often concerns Palestinian life.
Nye sees poetry as a bridge to other cultures in a world that is increasing marked by dissension. Currently
a resident of Texas, Nye has traveled to the Middle East and Asia for the United States Information Agency
promoting international goodwill through the arts.
