Plot[edit]

The series is set in a world where magic exists and has been utilized as a technology for nearly a
century. Rather than casting spells with chants or other traditional forms of spellcasting, mages use
a Casting Assistant Device, better known as a CAD. Mages infuse the CAD with psions ( Saion , ?
lit. "thought particles"), a substanceless particle and psychic phenomenon. The CAD itself provides
an activation sequence, which is used to construct a ritual in order to invoke the magic. This magic
ritual targets the Idea, the platform on which Eidos are recorded. Eidos refers to a form of
information that is attached to a phenomenon. Modern magic uses false signals to manipulate the
Eidos of a target, which in turn modifies the phenomenon and causes physical changes in the real
world.
In 2095, Tatsuya Shiba and his sister Miyuki Shiba are new students enrolling at the Private Magic
University Affiliated High School (First High School). Students are ranked according to their test
scores with practical magic ability being the top consideration: Students with the best practical magic
skills are enrolled in the Course 1 curriculum, while those with poorer practical magic scores are
enrolled in Course 2. These streams are known colloquially (and against school policy) as "Bloom"
and "Weed". Miyuki topped the entrance exams and is selected to be the first years' representative,
while Tatsuya is placed in Course 2 due to his low practical magic test scores, despite scoring
highest in the written/theoretical portion of the exams.

Reception[edit]
Anime News Network had four editors review the first episode of the anime:[37] Carl Kimlinger saw
potential in its take on a typical anime premise, praising Tatsuya as the lead protagonist and its
handling of mysteries surrounding the plot; Theron Martin, although hopeful because of its male lead
and plot concept, expressed criticism towards the indistinguishable animation and constant
exposition for the viewers; Rebecca Silverman felt that it was bland and brought nothing new in its
placed season and was heavily critical of the separation of its two main siblings during school
because of "perceived differences". The fourth reviewer, Hope Chapman, expressed immediate
dislike towards the series. She criticized it for lacking anything to engage the viewers and for being a
lazy adaptation of a light novel, concluding her review with "I can't even remember the last time I saw
something with not a single redeeming factor or thing to recommend about it at all".[37] Kotaku's
review was negative towards the series, with the reviewer criticizing the direction and storytelling for
being aimless and conveying hollow information, saying that "Perhaps with a different director or
screenwriter The Irregular at Magic High Schoolcould have proved to be a great anime."[38]

A Course 2 student and Tatsuya's classmate. She is one of the
first people to befriend Tatsuya. Erika is the youngest daughter
of the Chiba Family, one of the Hundred Families, and is a
master of swordsmanship. She greatly admires her older half-
brother Naotsugu and disapproves his relationship with Mari
Watanabe. Because of the amount of time she and Leo spend
together, their friends tend to believe they're a couple. During
the Yokohama Disturbance, she wielded the giant sword
Orochimaru (), one of the pinnacles of sword-type
armament forged by the Chiba Family. She is the first of
Tatsuya's classmates and friends to know beyond doubt that he
is from the Yotsuba family, which she discovers about mid way
through Volume 11 of the light novels. Mayumi only suspects
strongly he is but unlike Erika, her suspicions had not been
confirmed by the time Erika discovers the truth during a tense Q
and A with Tatsuya after a Parasite incident. The look on her
face is perhaps the first time during the entire novel series up
until now that her face showed any signs of fear after a cautious
warning by Tatsuya not to keep asking about his family
moments after she realizes the implication of their conversation.

A Course 1 student and Miyuki's classmate. She was part of the
group of Course 1 elitists who tried to bully Tatsuya's group of
friends on the first day of school (they objected to Miyuki
wanting to spend time with her Course 2 brother and his
classmates). Tatsuya used his skills to foil her magic and the
arrival of the Student Council President and the Public Morals
Committee head prevented an escalation. She warmed up to
Tatsuya after he covered the incident up. She later develops
feelings for Tatsuya and even confesses to him. It is revealed
that Honoka's interest in Tatsuya began during the entrance
exams for First High School prior to this incident. She was
entranced by the beauty of his magic sequences in which there
was no spill over of extraneous psions indicating exquisite
control over his magic. She was actually angry at him when she
realized he was not a course 1 student like herself and blamed
him for not living up to her expectations. The fact she gave up
faith in him may make it unlikely or impossible that she could
ever truly love him as she thinks she does. During Summer
vacation, Tatsuya explained that an accident caused by magic
at an early age robbed him of any ability to feel or at least feel
strongly. She wants to be with him despite this revelation,
however, and says as much to him. Honoka is a descendant of
the "Elements" series of magicians, a group bred and genetically
manipulated to have extreme strength in magic relating to the
base "elements". Specifically, she is of the "Light" branch of the
elements. The "Elements" were originally so strong that they
had to make themselves dependent on other people by
changing their gene-structure to incorporate a principle of
obedience and reliance upon another person, so as not to be
perceived as uncontrollable superweapons. This explains why
Honoka has formed such a strong attraction to and reliance on
Tatsuya, as she found in him the person she wants to depend
and rely on. She is portrayed differently in the Mahka Kk no
Ytsei spin-off manga, where she doesn't wish to discriminate
against the Course 2 students and attempts to stop the two
groups from fighting. She goes on to win two events at the Nine
Schools Competition thanks in large part to Tatsuya's help
which further strengthens her infatuation with him.

A Course 1 student and Miyuki's classmate, she is also
Honoka's best friend. She was present but did not participate
when the group of Course 1 students harassed Tatsuya's
friends. In the aftermath, both she and Honoka join the Shiba
siblings' group of friends. Shizuku is a daughter of the wealthy
Kitayama Family. She's characterized by her mostly emotionless
demeanor, but she also has a crush on Tatsuya and a friendly
rivalry with Honoka and Miyuki. During the Nine Schools
Competition she tries and fails to offer Tatsuya a huge retainer
check to secure even his part time services for her family's
company, but he rebutts her by saying he wants to get his
license first after he graduates.

A Course 1 student. He is one of the group of Course 1 elitists
who confront Tatsuya's friends on the first day, almost attacking
Leo with magic. As a Course 1 student he refuses to
acknowledge Tatsuya, even after he demonstrates his
competence. He was named to the Public Morals Committee
alongside Tatsuya. It is revealed in Volume 5 that his family
comes from a line of privately hired bodyguards and that he
himself sometimes works part time for his family business.
During this adventure, Rin unveils his nice guy demeanor that
he hides under a prejudiced uppity privileged persona at school.
Ten Master Clans actually have 28 families but they choose only
10 most powerful families to be leading families while the rest
takes support roles.
They are currently the most powerful clan thanks mainly to the
fact that Maya is the clan head and one of the most powerful
magic users in the world. The family name is a reference to the
number 4 according to the novel series.
The former head of the Yotsuba Family and the Shiba siblings'
maternal grandfather. He is introduced in the eighth volume. He
died from overusing magic during the operation to rescue Maya.
(He would have lived had he simply rescued her, but he was
moved by his anger and outrage to avenge his daughter's
suffering and went overboard, essentially burning himself out).
The truth is, he bore a grudge and decided to with the backing
of most if not all of the Yotsuba family to declare a war of
revenge against Kunlungfu Labs and the Dahan nation. Near
the end when he is the last one of the 3 man squad sent to hit
the last lab target, it is suggested that he may have been a
victim of his own magic. His magic affected the minds and it was
suggested if he planted a idea they would die then that person
would die. At a critical time, he feels weary but in fact he is not
weary enough nor has he used enough magic as yet to ensure
death, yet he starts to think and believe he will not return alive
from this mission. Thus as sad as it is, he may well have been
the last victim of his own power and avenging rage.

The head of the Ichij Family and Masaki, Akane and Ruri's
father. He is there when Sado was hit and along with his son
fought back the invading armies. He is also there when they run
across the then orphaned Kichijoji and took him to safety and
then later set him up with a place to stay and go to school.

name is a reference to the number 5.
They are one of the 10 most powerful clans currently and their
name is a reference to the number 9.
The eldest son of Retsu and the current Clan Head of the Kud
Clan, introduced in the thirteenth volume. He is the father of
Kudou Minoru, who was artificially "born" from his genes and
those of his sister's. While he was born with great magical
power, it is considered average by the standards of the Ten
Master Clans. He has an inferiority complex because his talent
doesn't compare to his father's, which led him to the 'creation' of
his youngest son, Minoru, for the purpose of turning him into a
living weapon..
They are one of the 10 most powerful clans and their name is a

The 18 Assistant Houses are the other 18 families that take the
supporting role for the Ten Master Clans
They are one of the number 9 assistant houses but they and the
Kazumi give deference to Kudou because of Retsu.

When he first meets the siblings he acts like a bully and picks on
Miyuki which prompts a fight with Tatsuya. He is what is known
as a "Left Blood" which means he is descended at least in part
from former American servicemen based at Okinawa who left
some decades earlier by the story timeline. He is a large black
skinned youth about late teens or early 20s in age. In the novel,
he is illustrated as being bald or having a shaven head. He is
also the best fighter in his unit. He later has an official rematch
not one based on his likely inebriated condition at the base
where Kazama and Sanada test Tatsuya against 3 of their best

unit are also in fact magicians. He risks his life to save the
civilians and the Yotsubas, Miya, Miyuki, and Honomi from the
traitors and even fights his former friends and bunkmates to do
so. But after one of them is made brain dead by Miyuki's
cocytus, the other 3 fire their guns on all three Yotsubas and
leave them for dead. Only Tatsuya's power saves them and he
uses it for the first time on another person besides himself on
Miyuki.

He is a non magician "Left Blood" at the base who along with 3
comrades decides to betray his nation of Japan during the
invasion of Okinawa on August 11, 2092. He attacks Lance
Corporal Joe Higaki who comes to the aid of the Yotsubas and
civilians taking shelter at the base. Dick and his friends try to
take them hostage during the invasion. Miya Shiba, Miyuki, and
Sakurai are among the civilians they try to kidnap and who Joe
defends from that attempt.

A Course 1 student who is introduced in the fourth volume as
one of the first year representatives participating in the Nine
Schools Competition. She participates in the events Ice Pillar
Break and Speed Shooting. Eimi is a quarter British and her full
name is Amelia Eimi Akechi Goldie, nicknamed Amy. She is one
of the first Course 1 students to befriend Tatsuya. She meets
Hagane Tomitsuka in a theme park she later learns is run by his
family. There she is pursued by rival lesser branch members of
her family who attempt to kidnap and compel to reveal the main
branch's secret technique. Hagane helps her defeat them before
they can fulfill that objective.

A Course 1 student who is introduced in the third volume during
the Nine Schools Competition as one of the first years'
representatives. She participates in the Mirage Bat event. She is

her than male classmates gaze at her.

A Course 1 student who is introduced in the third volume during
the Nine Schools Competition as one of the first years'
representatives. At the celebrating First High's victory, she
states that she might have won her event had Tatsuya been her
engineer, unintentionally criticizing her upperclassman engineer.
A Course 1 student who is introduced in the fifth volume. She is
friends with Eimi, Subaru and Hagane.
They are one of the most powerful families in Japan and their
name is a reference to the number 7.
The head of the Ichij Family and Masaki, Akane and Ruri's
father. He is there when Sado was hit and along with his son
fought back the invading armies. He is also there when they run
across the then orphaned Kichijoji and took him to safety and
then later set him up with a place to stay and go to school.
They are one of the 10 most powerful clans of Japan and their
name is a reference to the number 5.
He has an inferiority complex because his talent
doesn't compare to his father's, which led him to the 'creation' of
his youngest son, Minoru, for the purpose of turning him into a
living weapon..

reference to the number 2 according to the novel series.

They are one of the 10 most powerful clans and their name is a
reference to the number 10. The senior who is in charge of club
activities introduced in Tatsuya's first year is a member of this
clan.
The 18 Assistant Houses are the other 18 families that take the
supporting role for the Ten Master Clans
Head of the Shipp Family and Takuma's father. He's
introduced in the Twelfth volume. Unlike his son, he holds no
animosity towards the Saegusa family. He was said to possess
Magic Power on par with the Ten Master Clans. Out of all of the
Clan Heads, it is said that he is the most cautious, often causing
him to be seen as a coward, even by his own son. Saegusa
Mayumi sees him as a very practical and considerate person.
Thus, theres no way to tell what he is thinking on the inside.
They are one of the number 9 assistant houses but they and the
Kazumi give deference to Kudou because of Retsu.

The Hundred Families didn't have really 100 families but they
mean that they only second to the Ten Master Clans.
Kanon is part of this family and one of the students at the nine
schools competition as well as the fiance of Kei. Her family is
near the upper echelons of the Hundred Families.

He later has an official rematch
not one based on his likely inebriated condition at the base
where Kazama and Sanada test Tatsuya against 3 of their best
soldiers in hand to hand combat. After he beats him and the
others, he respectfully admits it and comes to respect the
