The new a r t of a i r - c o n d i t i o n i n g b i d s f a i r t o produce, in time, indoor

atmospheric c o n d i t i o n s as good aa t h e b e s t o b t a i n a b l e anyvhere o u t of doors, b u t it

is a mistake t o assume that t h i s feat has a l r e a d y been accompZished. Prof- c* p*

YagloU, of the Harvard School of P u b l i c Health, s a y s :

the s e c r e t s o f reproducing indoors the natural climatic elements as they e x i s t

open country under i d e a l weather conditions have n o t y e t been f u l l y ascertained. Ex-

t e n s i v e studies have f a i l e d t o r e v e a l t h e e t i m u l a t i n g q u a l i t y i n open cbuntry a i r

t h a t is apparently l o s t when tha air i s b r o u g h t indoors, anti p a r t i c u l a r l y when it

is t r e a t e d mechanical40
F a i l u r e t o eupply the r i g h t amount and q-ffy of ultraviolet r a d i a t i o n ,
such as is received i n favored l o c a t i o n s outdoors, has been suggested a8 the reason

why indoor c l i m a t e s are n o t wholly s a t i s f a c t o r y ; d e s p i t e the fact t h a t type8 of

e l e c t r i c lamp s p e c i a l l y designed f o r producing u l t r a v i o l e t i n a d d i t i o n t o v i s i b l e

Prof. Yaglou himself is t h e exponent of t h e i d e a t h a t the quality of air

H e f i n d s t h a t in occupied rooms t h e r e is a marked decrease i n the number of both

p o s i t i v e and n e g a t i v e small ions, and he i s experiinentSng with apparatus designed


f o r supplying t h i s l o s s of ions. This idea i s , however, of recent o r i g i n and is
still l a r g e l y s p e c u l a t i v e -
