2. BACKGROUND OF STUDY
2.1 Observation Result
Page 2
Based on the observations made in 2010 by Empit Hotimah, in the
Jurnal Pendidikan Universitas Garut, Fakultas Pendidikan Islam dan
Keguruan, Universitas Garut,, as for the observation data obtained are as
follows.

Observer make observations on Penggunaan Media Flashcard

Dalam Meningkatkan Kemampuan Siswa Pada Pembelajaran Kosakata
Bahasa Inggris Kelas II MI Ar-Rochman Samarang, Garut. Observer
divides her observations in two cycles.

The first cycle is done by doing the test questions by students. The
execution of the first cycle test questions, the assessment given by
teachers is the correct amount in answering the listening questions with
multiple-choice which consisted of 10 questions and speaking test about
pronounce the names of animals in English correctly.

After the assessment, the average value obtained in the first cycle of
students is 68, with learning completeness about 72%, while the value
obtained from assessment aspects such as assessment in listening the
vocabularies and pronouncing the vocabularies. The average value
obtained from listening vocabularies is 71 with learning completeness
72% and the average value of pronouncing the vocabularies is 64 with
the learning completeness only 50%. By looking at the minimum
completeness criteria predetermined in MI Ar-Rochman which is 65,
there are 13 students who achieve the criteria completely, it means that
only 72% of students who succeed on this subject, while according to
KTSP (Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan), a study categorized
completed when the value of students' completeness gained 75% of the
total number of students.

Page 3
When compared with prior learning using flashcard media, the
number of students who have achieved learning completeness has
increased, which was originally 44% to 72%. From the acquisition value
can be concluded that the use of flashcard media in learning English
vocabulary can improve the students ability to the material learned.

Observer evaluate the results of the first cycle and give some advice
to teachers to the deficiencies that exist in the first cycle, so as to increase
the percentage of learning completeness in English subject. The advice
given is as follows.

1. In apperception and motivating activities should does not just do

a "Tap Spirit", so the children does not feel bored, but it may add
a song that leads to the material that will be given
2. In lessons, the teacher should more involved the students in the
use of Flashcard media, and in its use, it should more focused on
learning goals which students can pronounce the vocabulary
correctly.
3. In addition, the observer gives feedback. to make students more
excited, the students should be given a reward
The second cycle carried out in the same way as the first cycle. In
answering the questions in the second cycle, the assessment of the
accuracy of the students in filling out multiple-choice test questions for
listening questions, and students ability to pronounce the vocabulary.

After the assessment, the average value of students obtained in the

second cycle is 84, with learning completeness about 100% while these
values derived from aspects of assessment, such as assessment in
listening vocabularies and pronouncing the vocabularies. The average
value obtained from listening vocabulary is 90 with learning

Page 4
completeness 100% and the average value of pronouncing the
vocabularies is 78 with learning completeness 100%. By looking at the
minimum completeness criteria which have been determined in Ar
Rochman MI which is 65, there are 18 students who achieve the criteria,
which means that it is 100% successful students in the subject, while
according to KTSP (Kurikulum Tingkat Satuan Pendidikan), a study
categorized completed when the value of students' completeness gained
75% of the total number of students.

After the test, the observation was taken from the observation of
teacher performance. Where the performance of teachers in the
implementation of learning in this second cycle start from doing
apperception up to conduct follow-up, observers give good ratings,
because the deficiencies in the first cycle followed up in this cycle.

2.2 Anthropometry

Anthropometry is derived from the "anthro" which means human

and "metri" which means the size. Anthropometry is a study of human
body measurement dimensions of bone, muscle and adipose tissue or fat
(Survey, 2009). According to (Wignjosoebroto 2008), anthropometry is a
study related to the measurement of the dimensions of the human body.
Anthropometry include various sizes of the human body such as body
weight, position when standing, when stretched his arms, body
circumference, leg length, and so on.

Anthropometric data are used for various purposes, such as the

design of work stations, working facilities, and the product design in
order to obtain appropriate and feasible measures with the dimensions of
human limbs that will use it. Anthropometric data are needed in the
Page 5
manufacture of a product because the products should have a positive
impact, both in terms of ability and health of users. So here is the table of
Anthropometric data.

3. EXPLENATION PRODUCT

3.2 Basic of Product Selection

We decided to make this tool has a goal to help parents to simplify
give education to children at an early age with the principle of give
stimulation to children in learning the English language with fun and
improves the child's curiosity about English vocabulary.
The process provides stimulation in early childhood continuously
and appropriate to their age level, the ability and willingness of the child
will give good results, This process is like carve on the stone, which
takes a long time but gives a perfect result that will be firmly embedded
in their brains that are not easily erased.
Because in Indonesia, most parents prepare provision of food to
children when going to school, in the context of use this habit we
innovate to create product that can gives an education to children

6. Sticker that has printed the animals pictures to taped on the
duplex card
According to the phenomenon, based on the data obtained in the
background of study, to practice English for elementary school children,
media is needed. One of them is picture as media. "Teman Edu" is box
meal that serves other than to put food, also as a medium to learn English
through pictures.

In determining the design of the Teman Edu, of all aspects must be

considered. The consumers of Teman Edu is elementary school
children. Aspects that certainly consider are size, materials used, and

Page 8
weight of the box meal. The size that would be determined must be
appropriate to the child's ability to carry or hold it. Materials used must
be safe for health and can be recycled. Also to the weight of the Teman
Edu isnt make the children feel too heavy when carrying it.

3.4 Product Planning and Identifying customer

Planning is the most basic management functions and very broadly
includes estimates and calculations regarding the activities to be
implemented in the future to follow a certain order. Planning is one of the
means of management to achieve the goals set for it every management
level in the organization is in dire need of planning activity
The purpose of planning should be firm, clear and easy to
understand. Often planning should be changed, therefore besifat planning
must be flexible and open to be changed when needed. The flexible
nature of the exercise of the activities must be monitored and controlled
continuously adapted to existing conditions, but planning should remain
on the goals set.
Then to planning a good product and to know the desires consumers
to the products we conducted a survey about the product such as what is
desired by consumers so that in the process of producing our products on
target to the needs of the market, these the results of a questionnaire
which we spread through the application google drive of 136 the
correspondence:

Page 9
Page 10
Seen from the correspondence that it is shown desire of consumers to
use the lunch box for children is very high and the quality of the feed box
is a very important aspect so we decided to produce lunchbox which has
good quality by using materials that are safe for the health of children as
well as we create new innovations the lunch box that is other than a lunch
box for children of our products can help your children learn English
language

3.6 Industrial Design

The realization of a product greatly affect the consumer interest to
buy. In addition, functions, size, and weight, can be considered by
consumers in choosing the products that will be used.

Teman Edu comes with a unique design, eye-catching colors, also

multi-function. Moreover, the materials used are certainly safe, and light
weight. Aside from being box meal, Teman Edu also as a medium of
learning English so the children dont feel boring, but challenging.

3.7 Design of Manufacturing

3.7.1 Design For Manufacturing

Design for manufacturing is the most important thing to
overcome the existing problems when do the concept stage of
product development such as difficulty connecting needed and
specifications to the problems of special design. Manufacturing
design has a relationship with production costs, which by calculating
the production costs in this case called to the cost of manufacturing
is the aspect that describe the level of success of a company in the
sale of a product and the amount of profit when sell the products.
Then to reduce production costs, the company must attention
to the principles of design and manufacturing engineers as Reducing
the total number of the products parts, a part which no motion
Page 12
relative to another part, do not need to be made of different
materials, or which would make a assembly difficultly is right
section to be removed as this will affect the cost of production. So to
overcome all the problems on the design of the manufacturing
company can use a methodology known as DFM, these
methodologies have a principle of do briefings to a low
manufacturing costs without compromising on product quality.
Economically successful design is dependent on the
guarantee of high product quality and minimum manufacturing costs
.DFM (Design For Manufacturing) is one method to achieve this
goal.
DFM starts during the concept development stage, as the
functions and specifications of the product set. When an election
concept, cost is a criterion dlm take decisions, even though the
estimated cost is still subjectif. During the design stage of the system
level, teams make decisions about how to describe the product into
separate components, based on the expected costs and implications
of the complexity of processes manufaktur.Pada detail design phase
of accurate cost estimates can be obtained.
That is why we are taking various measures such as the following:

1. Estimating the cost of manufacturing

Manufacturing costs are the sum of all costs for the input of the
manufacturing system and to the process of making the output
generated by the system. How to estimate the cost of manufacturing
there are:
a. Fixed cost
Costs numbers will continue to remain, and has not changed in
the slightest though the number of items and the number of
Page 13
products sold fluctuations in normal.Biaya capacity should always
be paid regardless of the business. The fixed costs that we use
Factory Building Rental Costs, the company must prepare a
budget to pay rent Building Factory, on an ongoing basis.

b. Variable costs
Variable costs adalalah type of cost function to supplement the
fixed costs and dynamic. He followed the large number of units
produced or the number of activities undertaken. At this cost, the
amount of which will we spend per unit or per activity actually
amounts to remain while the total cost will amount to adjust with
the number of units produced or the number of activities
undertaken.
For variable costs in our product, namely the use of raw
materials to create a "Friends Edu" such as PP (polypropylene),
Stainless Style, Stickers, Magnet Sheet, Magnets Round Flat, then
we have to adjust the purchase of material to the product that will
be our production so that costs us spend to purchase materials in
accordance with the amount of product that will be in production.

2. Reduce the cost of components

In this case we will buy standard components are used, with the
lowest possible cost and using the best materials in terms of quality
and cost .And use planning use of appropriate materials so that its
purchasing product components on target.

3. Reduce the cost of assembly

In This assembly costs associated with The wages Labor and Cost
of equipment and tools used, in order to reduce the costs we use
Page 14
methods such as Integrating components, Maximize ease of
assembly, Considering the assembly by the customer in this case the
customer assemble our own products such as picture clue which can
be installed Customer self.

4. Reduce the cost of production support

Production support costs associated with the cost of materials
handling, quality assurance, purchasing, shipping, receiving, facility
and equipment maintenance.
In this case we use the system as much as possible suppliers who
take our products to the factory so that the company can reduce
shipping costs and to reduce maintenance costs of equipment we will
give a briefing menggenai use of the machine to the work force it
aims to reduce the level of damage to the equipment so that it does
not direct costs can be reduced equipment maintenance.

3.7.2 Cost Analysis

From the calculation of the cost of production of these
products such as Total Direct Costs, Factory Overhead Costs and
profits of companies that produced the price per unit is Rp 76.039.
and we producing these products 1000 units per month in the first
year so about 1200 units per year, we will produce this product.

Page 15
3.8 Creative and Innovation Side
Teman Edu is an acronym for Tempat Makan Edukasi. This
product was inspired from our concern about the vocabulary in English to
elementary school children. Although the discussion of collecting data
about the use of flashcards, we create exciting innovations that
elementary school children can learn English independently, by keep in
using the pictures as the media.
Teman Edu comes with a uniqueness by using the works of
suitcase locks. The pack of Teman Edu is equipped with pictures of
animals without the description of the animals name. Teman Edu has
ten key code like a suitcase, but the difference is the code consist of
letters. Which means, one code represents one letter. The capacity of the
letters of Teman Edu is a ten letter. On the side, there is a reset button
to be pressed when we want to change the code. Equipped with handle
Page 16
that connect the lid to the body box, this handle will be detached from the
reset button when the code is successfully solved.
When we prepare the food for the child, when we want to close, the
code can be set according to the selected picture. To open the "Teman
Edu", children must answer the name of animal in pictures that given in
English. When the child answer the picture successfully, then the
Teman Edu will automatically open, and the child is ready to enjoy the
food. Overall, Teman Edu can support the English learning for the
children, because the children can use it every day, without waiting to get
English lessons in the classroom, and children can practice English
independently.
