5.0 Procedure

In the Office (General Maintenance Instructions)

Unplug MultiRAE from charger, hold MODE Key to turn on; Alarm will beep once,
watch display screen for messages such as:

Sensors installed & their warranty expiration

Alarm limits
Sensor Firmware
Last calibration date
User/Alarm/Datalog modes
Datalog Period
Warm-up will take approximately 90 seconds

Check the status of the meter. Battery life at three segments (max), date and time,
appropriate sensors calibrated (check last calibration date). No alarms and sensors
reading zero indicate monitor ready for use. If alarms (pump or lamp) appear,
troubleshoot (see operational manual). Verify external filters fitness for use (see
QA/QC).

1. Install and calibrate the relevant sensors as specified by the above instructions
and job-specific Measurement Survey
2. While in survey mode, enter the menu, and then select Monitor, which will
display settings for date and time. Make the necessary adjustments to these
fields as needed (Refer to manual).
3. Generate calibration certificate, print, sign and file in the appropriate
instrument folder.
4. It is the responsibility of whomever is removing the MultiRae from the office to
update the MultiRae folder with the relevant log out information prior to
leaving the office.

5.1 Calibration

5.1.1 Fresh Air Calibration

Please note that Fresh Air calibration MUST be done before single
sensor calibration
1. Press and hold down both Mode and N/- keys for three seconds to enter
programming mode.

2
2. Calibrate monitor? is the first item on the menu. Press Y/+ to perform
calibration.
3. Select Fresh Air Calibration from the Calibration sub menu
4. Attach the regulator to the zero air gas cylinder (ensure that the cylinder is
dated in use and not expired), turn the regulator to allow gas flow, and
connect the tubing to the monitor's intake valve.
5. Press the Y/+ key to start fresh air calibration of the monitor. The display
shows zero . In progress followed by the name of each sensor and the
message zeroed. The display should show a reading of 20.9 for the oxygen
sensor and 0.0, (or a very small value), for all other sensors.
6. After a five second pause the display will show the message Zero Cal Done!
Turn off gas and disconnect the regulator from the zero gas cylinder.

5.1.2 Single Gas Calibration

1. After pressing "Calibrate Monitor" as in Fresh Air Calibration above, press
Mode until "Single Sensor Calibration" is selected. Press Y/+ to select Single
Sensor Calibration from the calibration sub menu. The display shows all the
installed sensors in the monitor with the cursor blinking at the first sensor
location. Press Y/+ key to select the highlighted sensor and start the
calibration, or press Mode key momentarily to move to the next sensor
location.
2. Attach the regulator to the Span Gas Cylinder (ensure span gas cylinder is not
past expiry date) and connect it to the monitor. Ensure to turn on the flow to
the meter.
3. After a sensor has been selected, the display shows Apply X Gas and will
wait for the gas to reach the sensor. When the calibration gas has reached the
sensor the display will show calibration in progress. 60 with the
countdown timer showing the number of remaining seconds while the monitor
performs calibration.
At times the sensor will not acknowledge that a span gas is being used. The
display will show: "No gas Flow" and request whether the calibration should
be aborted. Press "N/-" to abort or "Y/+" to attempt the calibration
manually. In some cases, the sensor will recognize the gas on a manual
calibration and will calibrate as normal. After calibrating, the meter will give a
reading in ppm (or ppb for tVOCs) which should ideally be very close to the
span gas value. If the value given is not within an acceptable range (>0.2 for
most sensors, >1ppm for others based on concentration
of span gas) then the calibration should be redone until an appropriate value
is obtained.
3
Note: the reading should be very close to the span gas value. After about five
seconds pause, the display will show the message Span Cal Done! Turn Off
Gas.
4. This completes the single gas calibration procedure for one sensor. The
display shows the single gas calibration sub-menu for a user to select another
sensor or move to next calibration sub menu.
5. Turn off the gas flow. Disconnect the calibration adapter from the MultiRae
monitor.
6. Repeat steps 1 to step 5 to calibrate the next sensor.

5.2 At the Job Site

1. Turn on the meter by pressing the holding Mode for five seconds. Allow the
meter to warm up and stabilize for approximately five minutes.
2. Locate the predetermine areas and assess them to determine representative
positions to place the meter.
3. After the meter has stabilized, it should be placed in an appropriate location
along with a CARIRI sign. The meter should be placed away from air condition
vents, fans and doorways or high traffic areas. It should be place within
working height for example on a desk.
4. Press Mode on the meter until "Start Datalog" is found. Press Y/+ to begin
logging.
5. Allow the meter to log for fifteen minutes and record the relevant information
on the MultiRae field data sheet.
Note: Extra points should always be taken to compensate for any errors
which may occur during monitoring.
6. To stop logging, press Y/+ again where prompted.
7. Repeat sampling method for additional points as predetermined by
walkthrough and work scope

5.3 Return to Office

1. It is the responsibility of the equipment user to update the MultiRae folder
with the relevant log in information upon return to the office.
2. The technician is responsible for downloading the data onto the computer and
generating the tables. If the data is not downloaded, the instrument should be
marked as 'to download' before it is used on another job.
3. The meter should be returned to its designated storage area and placed to
recharge.

4
5.4 Downloading of Data
1. Connect the data cable to the MultiRae and the computer. Press Mode on the
MultiRae until "Enter Communication Mode" is found. Press Y/+ when
prompted until the MultiRae enters communication mode.
