Torch Times

September 21, 2017

Dear Families,

We are almost at the end of the first quarter already! The end of the first quarter is on October
6th. All corrected assignments with parent signatures are due on or before October 3 rd if your
child would like the opportunity to increase their score. Parent Teacher Conferences will be held
during the Early Release Week of October 16th October 20th. Please sign and return the
scheduling form that will be sent home the Monday after fall break and return to confirm the
conference. I appreciate all of your support at home to help the students this year!

Take a look at what we have been learning so far:

Math: We just finished learning how to add and subtract multi-digit numbers within 1,000,000 with
the traditional algorithm, including subtraction across zeros. I still have some math videos and
resources on my blog http://mrstorch.weebly.com/ if you would like to see our strategies. They will
continue to use their rounding skills to estimate sums and differences to determine reasonableness
of answers when solving multiple step word problems. Students are required to write equations with
a variable, and an answer statement (complete sentence) for all word problems.

Our next math unit is focusing on finding the area and perimeter of rectangles and rectilinear
figures including those with missing sides. After the break we will start working on multiplicative
comparison and interpreting multiplication equations. If your child is not yet fluent with their math
facts, please have them practice for 10 minutes daily by logging into their xtramath.com accounts. I
can track their progress and give them support where they need it if the students use those
accounts. Their log in information is in their agendas.

The Weebly Parent Resources tab on our class website has a new parent video and downloadable
information sheets for Quarter 2 math standards. I would be happy to print them for you if you
dont have access, just let me know.

Science: We are finishing up our water cycle unit. The students will complete a video explaining the
water cycle. Look for those to be posted on Seesaw soon. The students will be learning about
weather patterns next and they will get to play the role of a meteorologist soon! Look for those
videos to be posted in the near future on Seesaw as well. I posted some of the educational Science
videos that I played in class on Edmodo for the students to review.

Teamwork: Were focusing on how to transition quickly and quietly to maximize instructional time,
and how to be problem solvers.
