Franklin, MA: Trash/Recycle Survey Results

Survey conducted through Franklin Matters blog and “I believe Franklin Matters” Facebook page from
August 5 through August 14, 2010. The survey collected 86 unique respondents. The summary report for the
question “What DON’T you like about the new process?” are as follows:

Ref# 1Haven't really found a major problem with this yet (other than the bin covers remain open after pickup
and could collect rain/snow).
-------- ----------

Ref# 2Nothing
-------- ----------

Ref# 3
-------- ----------

Ref# 4nothing
-------- ----------

Ref# 5I don't like the fact that if it's not in the can that it just stays there. For example, this past week I had a
rather large box that would not fit in the can so it was broken down and put on the side of the recycle bin.
However, after everything was picked up the box remained behind. Sometimes we are going to have things that
aren't going to fit. These items should still be taken so long as they are on the street.
-------- ----------

Ref# 6the one can limit is a bit restricting. Sometimes things happen and you have a large item to throw out that
is too much for a single garbage can.
-------- ----------

Ref# 7What i don't like is that for what we pay for our trash they want us to pay for an extra bag or buy another
bin..that is crazy. We just had a huge family gathering and had to ask our neighbors if we could drop 2 bags in
theirs.bins. Wish I could of brought it to the dump but out of luck....
-------- ----------

Ref# 8Nothing. Although they need to educate others better about the correct spacing between bins... perhaps a
sticker campaign on the trash cans that are not far enough apart...
-------- ----------

Ref# 9
-------- ----------

Ref# 10 I wonder how the barrels will be with the snow banks. It will mean I have to dig out a special place for
the barrels..
-------- ----------

Ref# 11 that people still haven't figured out the proper placement of the cans and that people are still putting out
other types of cans that are not going to be picked up
-------- ----------

Ref# 12 nothing so far.

question “What DON’T you like about the new process?” are as follows:

-------- ----------

Ref# 13 We don't like the fact that this is costing us more money. We have already paid $35 for overflow and
we haven't even had a major event i.e. moving, purging, guests etc. We have already paid $35 for overflow and
dump costs. I transfered my trash from my old barrels and could only fit one of my old barrels into the new
barrel. There are some bigger carts that we have seen in other states. It does seem like we have the smallest
size. The old system was much easier to use if we had extra items. Not sure how the "$22" savings would
impact anyone.
-------- ----------

Ref# 14
-------- ----------

Ref# 15
-------- ----------

Ref# 16 It limits what extra things we can put out at the curb for pickup.
-------- ----------

Ref# 17 IT AMAZES ME THAT PEOPLE CAN'T READ THE SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE LIDS TO
PROPERLY PUT THE CONTAINERS OUT CURBSIDE.
-------- ----------

Ref# 18
-------- ----------

Ref# 19
-------- ----------

Ref# 20
-------- ----------

Ref# 21 The bins are a little large to store is older homes that may have much smaller garages. Some of us do
not have places outside to store such large bins.
-------- ----------

Ref# 22
-------- ----------

Ref# 23 The bins are way too small, even the recycling one is to small. You have to call to put bulky items out.
-------- ----------

Ref# 24 The containers are HUGE. We barely have any trash and very little recycling every week. These
containers are overkill. I wish we had option of two different sizes to choose from. My driveway is steep and
long and in the winter these huge containers will be a problem to get up and down the hill, especially for my

wife if I am traveling. I do not have room for them in my garage so I have to keep them outside and I hate
looking at them. Does anyone know where to find 65 gallon trash can liners so we can keep these monstrosities
clean????
-------- ----------

Ref# 25
-------- ----------

Ref# 26
-------- ----------

Ref# 27 Nothing......Those that comment on rainwater could dump it themselves or wait a week and it will end
up in the truck..
Holes in the bottom will weep impurities onto the sidewalk..
-------- ----------

Ref# 28 I definitely lost some capacity. I am constantly working on the house and cleaning out garbage. I donate/
freecycle as much as I can, but I have the occasional week where I hold stuff out and put it in the barrel the next
week since I can't fit it all.
-------- ----------

Ref# 29 We have had some trouble. Our trash and recycling wasn't picked up two weeks in a row. With phone
calls, that was resolved and I assume it was adjustment issues. I was so excited for this new trash and
unfortunately was disappointed in the first few weeks.
The biggest issue for us is MAGGOTS! In the trash can. Disgusting. We kept our trash barrels in the garbage
before and never had a problem. We always bag our trash inside the barrels. Now, with the new town barrels,
we had a major maggot problem. DISGUSTING. So now we have to keep our barrels outside. That's a
bummer. I've heard of other families having maggots, too.
-------- ----------

Ref# 30 Bulk items are no longer accepted, however a simple call to WM fixes that problem, as they are happy
to arrange an independent bulk pick up.
-------- ----------

Ref# 31 No complaints.

August 5 through August 14, 2010. The survey collected 86 unique respondents. The summary report for the
question “What DON’T you like about the new process?” are as follows:

Ref# 35 Not big enough. What about bigger items such as old coolers, big toys, old cushions etc.. Where do I
put them??
-------- ----------

Ref# 36 The large recycling bin isn't big enough to hold all of our recycling and we are a family of 3. On the flip
side we only have 1 bag of trash a week, so the trash bin is way to big.
-------- ----------

Ref# 37 The size of the barrels, they take up too much space.
The possible job loss, there used to be two people, now there is one. Was that person laid off or is doing other
things.
-------- ----------

Ref# 38 One trash barrel for all trash, makes it difficult for larger bulkier items that are between trash barrel size
and large curbside pick up items. There seems to be a no man's area that needs addressing.
-------- ----------

Ref# 39 Cans are a bit big to store in my garage -

-------- ----------

Ref# 40 1) There are too many oversized items that don't fit into the cart, so they're going to pile up in users'
cellars and garages
2) It's a "one sizes fits all" approach which does not work for many users.
3) The carts are too big and heavy (when full)for many women, elderly and disabled to easily handle. Once the
snow and ice arrive, it will be even more difficult for the above groups of users. A smaller cart is not always the
solution unless we could have two.
-------- ----------

Ref# 41
-------- ----------

Ref# 42
-------- ----------

Ref# 43 the lids being open after pick-up.

on rainy days - they will fill with water, on snowy days they will fill with snow.
is there a way to shut them after they are emptied?
-------- ----------

Ref# 44
-------- ----------

Ref# 45 I find that my family and I fill up both bins very quickly. They should have been larger. Honestly, I
think the old system was perfectly fine and fit our needs better.

question “What DON’T you like about the new process?” are as follows:

-------- ----------

Ref# 46 the trash barrel is not large enough!!!

-------- ----------

Ref# 47 I don't like that I can't throw away one big item like a mattress or piece of furniture occasionally
-------- ----------

Ref# 48 We can no longer put out small furniture for the trash.
-------- ----------

Ref# 49 Nothing
-------- ----------

Ref# 50 Bins are a storage burden. A bit difficult for older folk to wheel them up and down long driveways.
Winter will be interesting. What happens when the plough comes by in the middle of the night...we can't all get
out and shovel before work. Also will have to shovel out a bigger area in the street to accommodate the bins.
The snow banks are tough enough to clear a small area to a walkway.
-------- ----------

Ref# 51 Can no longer put out items that don't fit into the buckets. If it doesn't fit in the bucket then special
arrangements need to be made to get rid of the item.
-------- ----------

Ref# 52
-------- ----------

Ref# 53 You are limited to the capacity of what you can put in. There are things that you cannot fit in the
containers. It takes up a lot of space in our garage since we don't want to put them outside.
-------- ----------

Ref# 54 The recycle bin is not nearly big enough. the trash bin is not nearly big enough for a family of 5.
It is extremely frustrating that we actually had something in this town that worked well...it was our trash pick
up. Now we are paying the same...and getting something that is inferior to what we had. What a shame.
-------- ----------

Ref# 55 Not enough room for recyclables. Need another bin.

Odd sized trash items do not fit in bin...but can't take them to the dump?

-------- ----------

Ref# 56 i always run out of room in my recycling bin. also, i am concerned what i will do when i do spring
cleaning of my basement and attic....i will run out of space in my barrels.

Ref# 58 With four kids, the bins are much too small, they should have given bigger bins to people that need
them. I am currently looking at hiring a private hauler.

Ref# 59 Not sure what to do with some items that do not fit in trash container.

Ref# 60

Ref# 61 Sometimes having only one bin for trash will not be enough if you have a large family.

-------- ----------

Ref# 64
-------- ----------

Ref# 65 800,000 for new bins-old ones were great, how come the taxpayers arent' allowed to vote on anything in
this community??????????????????
more money wasted---------i thought there wasn't any money-guess more was found
-------- ----------

Ref# 66
-------- ----------

Ref# 67 bins don't have drainage hole in case someone is away all day & it rains or snows it will be a real pain
to dump it out.
-------- ----------

Ref# 68 I wonder if the combined recyclables (sp?) are truly sorted and re-used as much as before when they
were separated. Are we adding more to a landfill? I don't like the lack of knowing for sure.
-------- ----------

Ref# 69

Ref# 70 I have no complaints.

Ref# 72 don't like the restrictions on amounts of garbage, and still unclear if I have something larger to dispose
of what happens with that...don't like the idea of paying more for an extra bag of garbage. however, the drivers
on the trucks have been very nice and do a good job with keeping the bins looking neat - they don't just throw
them back to the curb like the old workers did!
