Description of Program:

Glennville Elementary School Media Center Rationale:

At Glennville Elementary School we pride ourselves with the motto Whatever It
Takes! We do whatever it takes to ensure that each students is given the best education possible.
Within the media center, students are served as if it is an extension of the classroom. Currently,
there are over 920 students in attendance at our elementary school. The students to teacher ratio
is now estimated at 20:1. Approximately 52% of our students are Caucasian, 21% African
American, 23% Hispanic, and 2% of other racial background. We are considered a Title 1
school, and all of our children receive free meals.
There are seven hours of instruction given to students each day, from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm.
Each child will have four main units of study: English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science,
and Social Studies. English Language Arts and Mathematics are blocked into ninety minute
segments, where Science and Social Studies each have forty-five minutes each; this only pertains
to grades 3-5. Students also have exploratory classes which they attend by week: Physical
Education, Music, Art, Computers, and Band (only applicable for 5th grade students). Students
are taught in the smallest classroom settings that the school system can manage, typically
averaging about 22 students per teacher. Inclusive classrooms typically only contain around 16
students at most.
The population of Immigrant children and English Language Learners (ELLs) has
increased within the last few years and continues to increase drastically. The Media Center at
Glennville Elementary School would benefit from being awarded the English Literacy for New
Immigrants Grant. The Media Center could help provide most English and literacy instruction
for students, apply more small group reading activities, practice literacy and comprehension on
accessible websites, and give more overall help to students who may have been overlooked
inside the natural classroom setting.

Budget:

Quantity Total Observed

Assistant Program Leader: 2 day each week: 28 weeks X $100 per week
(will read with the students) August-March= 28 weeks =
$2,800.00

Small set of book series for 1st: 6 copies of series 1st-5th grade allotted
each grade (5 books, plus 2nd: 6 copies of series budget for 5 different
assistant copy): 3rd: 6 copies of series grade-level appropriate
4th: 6 copies of series series
5th: 6 copies of series =
$200.00

Literacy/Comprehension Subscription to program(s) $2,000.00

program(s) for 1 year

Total: $5,000.00

If the Glennville Elementary school was given this award, an assistant would be hired to
read with English Language Learners from each grade throughout the day. The assistant, along
with the help of the Media Specialist, would choose a series of books for each grade level to
read. Each grade level of students would attend the meetings on Mondays and Tuesdays during
their exploratory time. As the assistant read with the students, he/she would ask comprehension
questions to determine understanding of the material. The classes will be held in the media center
to ensure a quiet, secluded session. The rest of the allotted fund would go towards a literacy and
comprehension program researched by the administrative and educator media board.
Total Budget for 2017 program:
The current funding for the 2017 program, including funds from the grant, are $5,000.00.
No money was awarded to the Media Center program this school year. When money is awarded
at the beginning of the school year, funding comes directly from the Tattnall County School
Board of Education.

Program Outcomes/Performance metrics:

The Media Specialist will assist with assessing the effectiveness of the program
with the students. Through observation, both the assistant and Media Specialist will
determine whether the students fluency and comprehension skills improved.
Checkpoints will take place at the end of September, November, and March to
determine improvement. The students will be given a few short paragraphs, where they
will read it by themselves, and answer short multiple choice questions about the
paragraphs to determine comprehension. The Media Specialist will also collaborate with
the selected students English Language Arts teachers, to have the students tested on
fluency at the end of September, November, and March. The teachers will simply give
each student one minute to read a short story. The teacher will mark out mispronounced
words or phrases and label the amount of words read in the one minute time period.
Throughout the program, the Media Specialist and assistant will collect data to ensure
that the program is efficient.

I certify that the statements herein are true, complete, and accurate to the best of my
knowledge.
