ETABS 9.7.

4 How to Use
1st step:-Open the ETABS window. And you would see the figure shown below

2nd Step: - on the right bottom corner there is a drop down list for changing units. Click it and a drop down
list would emerge. Select the appropriate unit. For our case select KN-m.

3rd step: - create a new model file. To do so go to File>new model or press Ctrl+N.
And the following window will appear once the new model option is clicked

Select DEFAULT.EDB and the following window would appear

The above window is used to create the necessary Grid plan that matches the architectural plan as well
as incorporates some structural futures that cannot be seen on the architectural plan. We have to ways
of creating grids, either using the uniform grid spacing button or custom grid spacing button (both
buttons can be seen in the above picture). The most commonly used is the custom grid spacing button
since it is flexible.

The other function of the above window is to create the story dimensions. The story dimensions include
two options, simple story data and custom story data. And here also the most used one is the custom
story data option since it is flexible.
The third part of this window, Add Structural objects, is used when ideal structure is to be modeled. The
use of most option is seldom since most structures that are designed using ETABS are not that simple.so
we will use most of the time the Grid only option.

- Lets leave everything on this window as it is and press OK. And the following should be obtained

4th step: - now we will define material and section properties. To do so go to Define> material
properties option

Once you select the material properties option the following window would appear
Select add new material from this new window and a new form would appear

Lets define C-25 concrete with S400 Rebar. In order to do so, Change the material name to C-25(this is
optional), leave the type of material as isotropic, change Mass per unit volume to 2.5, weight per unit
volume to 25 , modules of elasticity to 29000 mpa , poisons ratio to 0.2 , if necessary change the coeff. of
thermal expansion to 10106 ( EBCS 2,1995).

On Design properties part change the specified conc. comp strength, to 20 mpa ( here it takes the
cylindrical strength of concrete and for C25 concrete the cylindrical strength is 0.8*25=20 mpa). And the
bending reinf. Yeild stress, fy is 400 mpa since we are using S400 rebar and shear reinf. Yield stress, fys is
also 400 mpa.

After inserting the above information press ok.

Now we can proceed with the creation of Frame sections. Go to Define> Frame sections and the following
window would appear

Select all the existing properties and press delete property button. This
