great economy
The S-Class impressively demonstrates that extraordinary luxury and effortless
performance can certainly be combined with exemplary efficiency and responsibility.
Indeed the Mercedes-Benz S 400 HYBRID is easily the most efficient luxury saloon in
its class. But all the other models in the S-Class have also been made significantly more
efficient by numerous fuel economy measures. With an output of 173 kW (235 hp) and
540 Nm, the S 350 CDI BlueEFFICIENCY has a fuel consumption of only 7.6 l/100 km
with carbon dioxide emissions of 199 g/km, for example.

The S 400 HYBRID is representative of the Mercedes-Benz claim to technological
leadership in the field of hybrid technology. The low fuel consumption of 7.9 l/100 km
with 205+15 kW (279+20 hp) and 385 Nm and the low CO2 emissions of just 186 g make
this the worlds most energy-efficient luxury saloon. Thanks to compact construction
and a low weight penalty of only 75 kg, customers are asked to accept no compromises
in terms of space or payload.

Lithium-ion battery
The lithium-ion battery is the centrepiece of the highly efficient hybrid drive.
Mercedes-Benz is the first manufacturer anywhere in the world to use it in a series-
production car. Major advantages over conventional nickel/metal hydride batteries
include:

100 W per litre)

Dynamic performance and numerous additional benefits
The combined action of the internal combustion engine
and the electric motor allows many additional functions
that reduce fuel consumption and emissions, while
increasing agility and driving pleasure. This complex
system is managed by intelligent control electronics
which ensure the perfect response to different operating
situations, e.g. urban traffic, inter-urban driving or tail-
backs.
Braking and coasting to a stop
During every braking manoeuvre, and even when
easing off the throttle, the electric motor converts the
braking energy into electrical energy by a process
known as recuperation
The energy obtained during the recuperation phase is
stored in the lithium-ion battery
The hydraulic braking system is thus only activated if
the driver applies heavy pressure to the brake pedal

When the internal combustion engine is switched off,
the energy for the refrigerant compressor and steering
servo pump is supplied by the battery, thus lowering
fuel consumption while retaining the usual climatic
comfort even if the engine is switched off
Accelerating and moving off
Applying heavy pressure to the accelerator when moving
off or accelerating activates the boost function. The
electric motor then assists the internal combustion engine
with a maximum torque of 160 Nm. The boost function
of the electric motor reduces fuel consumption and emis-
sions, while ensuring powerful responsiveness and
effortless power delivery.
Hybrid drive, components
ECO start/stop function
Once the speed drops below 15 km/h during braking,
e.g. when coasting to a stop at traffic lights, the inter-
nal combustion engine is completely switched off by
the ECO start/stop function
Turning, parking and stop-and-go situations are
identified by the intelligent control electronics and
the ECO start/stop function is deactivated
The HOLD function ensures that the engine is
switched off. If it is activated, the selector lever is
moved to the "P" position or the parking brake is
engaged, the driver is able to take his foot from the
brake pedal without starting the internal combustion
engine
Inter-urban driving
The boost, constant speed and recuperation phases
alternate as needed. Depending on the route profile,
large amounts of recuperation energy are available to
reduce fuel consumption and emissions
During acceleration the electric motor assists the com-
bustion engine with the recuperated energy
City traffic
Frequently switching off the internal combustion engine
with the ECO start/stop function when coasting to a stop
at traffic lights preferably using the HOLD function
reduces both fuel consumption and emissions. Restart-
ing by the electric motor is particularly comfortable, rapid
and imperceptible.

The exemplary safety concept of the S-Class once again sets new benchmarks in auto-
mobile engineering with innovations, continuous further development and intelli-
gent interaction between all the safety functions.

Safe driving
New features:
Night View Assist Plus (optional) pedestrians are highlighted in the display and
the driver is able to respond even more rapidly
Lane Keeping Assist (optional) warns the driver with vibrations in the steering
wheel when the vehicle leaves its lane unintentionally

Active Body Control (ABC) with crosswind stabilisation (optional)* effectively

reduces the effects of crosswinds on the vehicle by acting on the ABC spring struts,
and makes it easier for the driver to stay on course (active from 80 220 km/h)
ATTENTION ASSIST* can detect potential driver drowsiness by monitoring the
steering and operating behaviour and prompts the driver to take a break. The system
is activated on journeys where conditions do not change for long periods at speeds
between 80 and 180 km/h

In combination with the improved radar sensors of DISTRONIC PLUS (optional), the
PRE-SAFE system provides additional safety in even more critical situations.

Advanced PRE-SAFE activation mechanisms

Autonomous recognition of additional accident scenarios, e.g. lane changes, vehicles
cutting in or when negotiating bends, or when static or moving objects ahead constitute
a high collision risk. Activation also takes place if the driver shows no response.
