Chapter 5 Solution (Problem 5.25, 5.38, 5.43, 5.51, 5.

57)

This chapter covers the Newtonian theorem. The important procedure to analyze the object movements
using Newtonian scheme can be summarized as below:

1) Set up the coordinate first. ( x-coordinate, xy-coordinate or rz coordinate..) Note that you
should find the proper coordinate for each problem.

2) Find and specify all the forces, for all the objects.

3) Express those forces along the coordinate system youve set.

You may practice this procedure, from the following problems

*5.25
The period of circular motion can be written, using the radius r and velocity v,
2r
T=
v
, while the force to maintain the circular path of radius r is

mv 2
F=

Using these expressions, the force F can be written as,

m 4 2 2 4 2
F= =
r 2

*5.38
STEP 1) Set up the proper coordinate system as, picture below.
y

19
1 62 2

STEP 2) Specify all the forces that the mass is exposed to and analyze those forces along the
coordinate youve set.

Let the mass of pack be M, gravitational acceleration g, the tension T1 , 2 for each rope.

x direction

T1 19 + 2 62 = 0

y direction

T1 19 + 2 62 =

STEP 3) Calculate the equations of motion in STEP 2)

1 19
T2 =
62

1962 81
T1 19 + = T1 = Mg
62 62
62 6219
T1 = ~ 228 , T2 = ~ 84 N
81 8162

*5.43
STEP 1) Set up the proper coordinate system as, picture below.

STEP 2) Specify all the forces that the mass is exposed to and analyze those forces along the
coordinate youve set.

Let the mass of flight be m, gravitational acceleration g , the wing force and gravitational force Fw , .
Then, we can set the equations of motion for two directions.

z direction

Fw cos Fg = 0

Fg = =

Fw =

r direction

2
Fw =

STEP 3) Calculate the equations of motion in STEP 2)

mv 2 mv 2 mv 2 v2
r= = = ~ 10.4
Fw sin Fg tan Fg tan35 35

Here we used v = 960km/h, g = 9.81m/s 2

*5.51
Let M be the mass of textbook, and m, the mass of the paperback.

Similarly, set up the 1d x-coordinate system and specify all the forces on every object.

1) t=0 ~ 0.42s the coordinate system can be specified as,

1

Then, the forces on the each object, textbook and paperback, are

1
m1 1

From textbook,.

F1 1 =

Form paperback,

f1 =

0.96
,where the acceleration a = = 2.29 m/s 2
0.42

Since the paperback didnt slide under the first movement until the time 0.42s, the friction force is bigger
than the force on the paperback, which means,

f1 = < =

s > = 0.23

2) t=0.42 ~ 0.33 s

The force exert on the textbook on x direction, as

m2 2
2
Similarly from each object,

F2 + 2 = 2

f2 = 2
0.96
, where the acceleration a 2 = ~ 2.91 / 2 . At this moment the paperback slid off, which means
0.33
the friction force is smaller than the force f2 .

f2 = |2 | =
2
s < = 0.30

Therefore the range of the friction coefficient is,

0.23 < s < 0.30

*5.57
Similarly set up the coordinate and analyze all the forces to find the equations of motion.

(a)

The acceleration on the block at the slope is,

a = gsin gcos

a = 10.04 m/s 2

v02
s= = 9.4 cm
2

(b) friction force on the object, when theres no movement,

f = s = 0.649 mg

Acceleration force due to the gravity is,

F = mgsin = 0.374 mg

The friction force is bigger than the acceleration force, thus, the object does not move
