Title: Recreation in Konkan

Background of the Study:

Konkan region is a coastal area between the Arabian Sea on the west and high
Deccan plateau on its east. It is a narrow strip of land, 740 km long, broken by a number of
rivers and creeks.. Mumbai island is in the northern part of the region, which is the economic
capital of India and a crowded urban metropolis. The northern Thane district is nearly urbanized
while the southern part of Konkan on the other hand is largely rural. Before the British colonial
rule there were many large and flourishing ports in Konkan along the coast which had
established trade links to Red Sea and Egypt. (Bombay Gazeteer, Ratnagiri & Sindhudurg}. As
the ports declined, Konkan districts except Thane were isolated. For British rulers, this difficult
region posed problems for railway and road construction. Road network started improving
slowly after 1950. In 1995 the Konkan railway was established and the area is got linked to the
rest of the country. Isolation of Konkan protected it from the industrial and urban influences and
hence it provides an opportunity to study the traditional life patterns.

From the entire stretch between Ratnagiri to Panjim there is no any major source of
entertainment for the people living in towns along. So the four talukas namely Sawantwadi,
Kudal , Vengurla and Dodamarg have to entirely depend on Goa and Belgaum for entertainment
purpose. These towns are developing at a rapid speed.

The history of recreation in konkan is a rich tapestry of people, places, events and social
forces showing the role of religion, education and government and the customs and values of
different cultures, their art, sports and pastimes.

In the early 20th century, the people of konkan were directly dependant on natural
resources for their livelihood. It is necessary for the land less class of people to go job hunting
in the region for their survival. Men and women often trave l long distances to larger towns
in summers to work on road construction or public works and return to villages in rainy
season to work on the farms. Their permanent houses located in the villages allow them
access to the traditional rights to share cropping. Old people and children generally stay in
villages. These people experience variety of environments in different regions, often staying
In tents on the travel or on the project sites in remote forests and towns. Besides farming
some of the families have skills like bamboo work, carpentry, masonry, building construction,
leather work, metal working, weaving, pottery, salt making etc. They commonly travel to the
Deccan plateau where sugar plantations need seasonal farm workers and they can make
more money working there. Agriculture, fishing, hunting were their main source of food and
income. But agricultural activities were carried out for only 4-5 months. So they had ample
of leisure time to spent. So they started spending their leisure time in entertaining
themselves by celebrating festivals, social events, playing cards, sports, organising dramas,
music, etc.

In the post independence period, no special and modern source of entertainment was
required as the Konkani people used to spent leisure time in celebrating various festivals for a
longer duration. At that time, hardly any migration used to take place for earning money. The
rural growth of these region in 1951-1961 was 5 percent of the total population.

After green revolution and post 1970s , due to social changes, a part of people started
moving to seek job opportunities. In those days, from a family, only one brother among the
multiple sibblings used to migrate to Bombay in search of job. And the remaining brothers used
to stay back in the rural areas for agriculture purpose. But after 1990, only one brother used to
stay back in the native rural area and the other 3 started moving to Bombay in search of jobs.
Money flow started in these region. So the people of konkan eventually had an extra amount of
money that they can spend on recreation. And also after green revolution, television, radio,
newspaper, magazines ,books started influencing the people. After that in coming years, literacy
rate also increased. Hence the people of konkan got to know the exterior world and new
sources of entertainment.

Then post 1990, in the following years the use of TV became a primary element to
spend leisure time at home. But at the same time social events of konkan didnt lose its
importance. With the end of the British and Portuguese Empires in India, the community has
made significant strides. Konkanis today are an urbanized community. A large section of the
community works in the banking sector, given their background in trade and commerce.
However, the community has diversified into various professions and made a name for itself in
the industrial, technical and medical fields. A high percentage of Konkanis are now engaged in
tertiary occupations as compared to other communities. A large number migrated to Bangalore,
Mumbai and other large cities after Independence.

With the growth of the rural development, the towns have continued to attract people.
So with developing population there comes a need of a modern source of entertainment like
theatres, etc. There are many religional and regional activities carried throughout the year in
konkan region from ages. Nowadays, the people of all age group from konkan demand for a
theatre and a place which is open every day for social gathering which means entertainment to
them. The youngsters are fond of getting themselves entertained in modern ways.

With the change in social and economic conditions, the hours per year committed to
work has declined. This redistribution of time has been accompanied by a drastic repackaging
of a leisure hours making possible new forms of leisure time, including the typically modern
notions of free evenings, the weekend, the paid summer vacations, as well as the lengthy
childhood and retirement. So the people of konkan need a place with modern source of
entertainment as well as a place which will also promote social and religional recreational
events.
