Standard Operating Procedure Cementing

1. Purpose
The common thread throughout the SOP and HWD Policies and Procedures in general is
the identification of responsibilities. This manual is intended to clearly and concisely
identify the steps required by employees to complete any given operation in a manner
that is consistent with Horizontal Well Drillers standards. It will document progressive
steps required in sequence that are to be followed, an authorizing company department or
position, and an author that is to be consulted if there are questions in any portion of the
SOP standards.

2. Scope
RIG PERSONNEL

3. Prerequisites
Personnel are required to wear proper personal protective equipment, follow job safety
rules, and have the appropriate experience and certifications to carry out their job
functions satisfactorily.

4. Responsibilities
Tool pusher will have ultimate accountability that driller and crews are completing the
procedure to standard. Driller and crews will be responsible for implementation and
actions to complete this task as described in the procedure steps.

5. Procedure

1. Hold a safety meeting with all personnel involved.


All personnel must attend the meeting.
Make sure that there are no operations other than cementing that will be carried out on
and around the rig floor.

Make sure that all personnel know where the first aid kits and eyewash stations are
located around the rig and discuss the evacuation and muster locations on site.
Confirm the location of the closest hospital in the event of an emergency.

2. Prepare the tools required.


Use the picker to raise tools up to the floor. Use taglines as required.
Watch for pinch points when handling the tools and placing them onto the floor.
Make sure that the tools are positioned on the rig floor in an orderly manner.
Install handrail over false floor on the rig floor.
No personnel are permitted on the catwalk while the pipe arm is in use.

3. Install the cement head.


Use proper lifting techniques.
Watch for and avoid pinch points between the cement head and derrick while hoisting
to set in place.
Stay clear of personnel swinging hammers.
Make sure that safety cables are used when hooking up the circulating head and
chicsans.
Never hammer on any lines that are under pressure.
Allow cementers to hammer their own hammer unions.
Verify that cementers are equipped with matching hammer unions.

4. Follow rules for working around high pressure lines.


Make sure that a inch (0.5") safety chain is used to chain down the casing while
pumping the cement to avoid pumping the casing out of the hole.
Stay clear of the floor while pressure testing the cementers equipment and pumping
cement.
Stay clear of high pressure lines.
Make sure that there are clear lines of communication at all times between the Driller
and the cementers that are pumping. Communication must be through visual contact or
with two way radios.

5. Reciprocate casing if applicable.


Make sure that when the circulating equipment is installed, it does not interfere with
the chic sans.
Watch for leaks around the unions.

Make sure that there is a safety cable that is attached from the elevator bails to the chic
san.
Watch your string weight while reciprocating the casing.
Be in direct contact with the cementers while they are pumping.

6. Follow rules for working with cement.


Workers must make sure of the following:
that they stay clear of the cementers trucks to avoid contact with the cement dust,

that they wear safety glasses,

that they wear rubber gloves and no bare skin is exposed to the cement,

that leather boots are fully laced and pant cuffs extend over the tops of the leather or

rubber boots,
that if clothing becomes saturated during the cementing process, they remove the

clothing immediately,
that they thoroughly wash off any skin contacted with cement, and

That they do not to wear saturated clothing until it has been washed.

7. Pump cement and drop the plug.


Make sure that the pressure has been bled off from the cementers lines before
loosening the hammer unions to drop the plug.
Cementers must drop their own plugs.

8. Follow rules for handling cement returns.


If it is surface casing that is being cemented, make sure that the trash pump is rigged
up to pump the cement from the cellar out to the sump or pit.
Make sure that the trash pump and hoses are properly secured
Flush the cellar with fresh water to dilute cement in the cellar.
Make sure that pumps and lines are flushed with water before they are disconnected.

9. Tear out the cementers.


Make sure of the following
that all pressure is bled off the cementers lines before disconnecting any lines,

that the picker is used to lower cementers tools back down to the ground level, and

That the picker slings are hooked up properly.

10. Use taglines to control the cementers tools as they are lowered from the rig
floor down to the catwalk and ground level.
