Recommendation letter for Mr. Hafiz

Muhammad Nabeel

December 15, 2014

Dear whom it may concern,

I have known Mr. Hafiz Muhammad Nabeel since September, 2013 when he first joined
BioRobotics Lab as a master student. He is an immensely creative individual who is always
in pursuit of novel and innovative approaches to posed problems. He has a good logical
reasoning ability and always try to solve problems efficiently. In addition, he has
demonstrated admirable powers of observation, and has the ability to communicate and
suggest changes that were effective upon implementation.

During his association with my laboratory, I have had ample opportunity to assess his
professional and personal abilities and I must say Mr. Nabeel has shown excellent interest in
all his academic pursuits. He is a person with very good grasping and analyzing capabilities.
Nabeel demonstrates the good intellectual ability required to understand and apply the
various theoretical concepts. He visited my office frequently for further explanation of topics
discussed in class in an effort to better understand the subject matter and pose intelligent
questions. He was very eager to learn new things, and was always open to correction of his
mistakes.

In my two courses Haptic Interface and Advance Robotics, I have interacted with Nabeel,
both inside and outside the classroom and I have found him to be a responsible, sincere, and
an all-around respectable young man; all of the qualities which ultimately lead him to good
grades in both the subjects.

During the first year of his master studies he worked on a single port minimal invasive
surgical robot under my supervision, alongside another graduate student, in which he had to
implement the control algorithm to make the surgery intuitive. He worked hard to learn the
new technical tools necessary to complete the project. This project demonstrated his ability to
learn new tools, meet tight deadlines since the robot was set for production and more
importantly his ability to work in a team environment. I was immensely impressed with his
commitment during his work on the aforementioned assignment.

Furthermore, he has worked on several diverse projects under my supervision in which his
performance was impressive; he has implemented TDPA (Time Domain Passivity Approach)
on Bilateral and Trilateral Tele-Operation to ensure the stability of the tele-operation system
in position-force architecture. His thesis project is also related to the stability of bilateral tele-
operation in which he has applied TDPA on four channel architecture to ensure the stability of

tele-operation system. While working on these research projects he has frequently visited my
office to discuss problems and has always tried to approach the problems encountered with
innovative and out of box designs aimed at improving the performance of the projects.

He has also worked on an entirely novel idea, in collaboration with another Ph.D. student of
my laboratory, on stability of tele-operation system and applied new approach on Haptic
Rendering, Position-Force and Four Channel Architecture. He has done great work in
this research and his attitude was very positive towards the research.

Nabeel is not only a good student and researcher but also a well-mannered person, he is
always ready to help other students not only in the course work but also in the research area.
His communication and presentation skills are impressive and he always tried to present his
idea in a good way. In conclusion, I find him an outstanding potential candidate for research
in the field of control and robotics.

I am very positive he will be a good Ph.D. student and also be a promising young researcher
in the area of control and robotics. For these reasons, I would like to recommend Hafiz
Muhammad Nabeel. If you have any question or need more information, please contact me at
the address mentioned below.

Yours sincerely,

Prof. Jee-Hwan Ryu
