Twenty-fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Greetings of peace.

We friars are grateful for the continued assistance we are getting from various news outlets.

First, we thank the Boston Herald. The Herald is our exclusive media sponsor for our October 12 gala.
Be sure to catch the special series of Herald articles about the Shrine, which will run the week of Oct 9.
The series is both in print and online with a video component. We'll put all of the videos on our web and
social media. Ads for the Shrine began running this past week online and in print. Finally, the Herald is
producing the video to be shown at the event itself. Many thanks to the good folks at the Boston Herald
for this amazing show of support!

We also thank the Boston Globe for their article about the relics of St. Anthony which are coming to the
Shrine for one day only: Tuesday, October 10. The article, "Saint Anthony, Saint Anthony, please come
around..." by staff writer Cristela Guerra, ran in last Sundays Globe.

Our Boston Health Care for the Homeless Programs women-only clinic, started at the Shrine about 18
months ago, has proven to be a huge success. Think a bit about women among the homeless population.
They are often physically abused and even sexually assaulted. These women are comfortable coming into
the Shrine to visit the medical clinic. Our thanks to Mary Ann Ponti, Director of Outreach and Nurse
Andrea Caputo, who have worked hard to build relationships and trust with this highly vulnerable
population. Up until now this has been a Thursday morning clinic, but we are now looking at opening up
the clinic on an additional morning of the week in order to serve more women. Thank you, Andrea and
Mary Ann. We are so happy to be able to provide this service here at the Shrine.

The date for our annual gala is approaching quickly. The Thursday, October 12th event is the most
important fundraising event of the year for the Shrine. We are very grateful for all of you who have
purchased sponsorships or individual. Event sponsorship and individual seats are still on sale. Thank you
for your generosity.

The Gospel this weekend reminds us that the last shall be first and the first shall be last. Jesus stirs our
religious imagination. Gods ways are not our ways. Avoid both presumption and despair. Try to
imagine what it would be like to walk in the shoes of another person. All of these kinds of messages push
us toward more compassion, more gentleness toward each other. And that, in turn, draws us closer
toward holiness and a greater sharing of life with Jesus.

May God bless you and your family in the coming week.

Fr. Thomas Conway, OFM
