Problem 1)

For the braced frame shown below design the tension only bracing members, A-B (double angle),
and C-D (non-upset threaded rod). Use the following criteria in your design:

Specified loads are unfactored,

For member A-B, select the lightest double-angles (2L____x____x____) with a 1/2
separation.
For member C-D select the smallest practical non-upset threaded rod diameter,
Use A36 steel fy = 36 ksi
Consider appropriate serviceability limit states in your designs. The maximum allowable
inter-story drift due to elongation of the tension braces due to wind loads is 0.5%.

Problem 2)
fy = 50 ksi
Select the lightest W12 and W14 sections for the column shown in the figure. Use A992 steel.
Assume that the column is part of a braced frame for buckling about its weak axis and an unbraced
frame for buckling about its strong axis.

Problem 3)

Determine if a W18x97 is adequate to carry the factored loads shown in the figure below with the
lateral bracing layout shown. Assume A992 steel. Check all applicable limit states and note your
assumptions. Show your work for each of the unbraced segments of the beam.

Problem 4)

Calculate the design flexural strength, Mnx, of the W21x48, and W14x48 sections (A992 steel).
How do your calculated values compare with the values tabulated in 3-2? Show all of your work.
