harma Productions’ ‘We Are Family’
is the official remake of the 1988 film,
‘Step Mom’. Directed by Siddhartha
Malhotra and produced by Karan Johar,
the film tells the touching story of a terminally
ill divorcee who is faced with the prospect of
accepting the new woman in her husband’s life
as the stepmother of her kids. The film portrays
the problems that the two face even as they try
to enter into an understanding. The film will see
the coming together of two of Bollywood’s most-
talked actresses, Kajol and Kareena Kapoor. The
last time they were seen together was in ‘Kabhi
Khushi Kabhi Gham’, which was also a Dharma
Production’s movie. The music of the film has
been composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy. The film
is scheduled to release on September 10,
Synopsis: Maya (Kajol) is the perfect mother.
Her life revolves around her three children, Aleya
(Aanchal Munjal), Ankush (Nominath Ginsburg),
and Anjali (Diya Sonecha), who think nothing
less than the world of her. Despite being divorced
from her husband, Aman (Arjun Rampal) Maya
has ensured that everything runs smoothly in her
house, under her watch, and that they continue
to remain a happy family unit. However, when
Aman introduces his girlfriend Shreya (Kareena
Kapoor), a career oriented woman, who has a lot
to learn about children, to the family, the situation
immediately takes an unexpected turn. When an
incident changes their lives drastically, bringing
the two women under the same roof, they find
themselves putting to test an unusual situation.

Forced to make some unorthodox choices for her
family, Maya must confront her uneasy equation

Character Sketch:
Kajol as Maya - Maya has never accepted
that her marriage is over. So she pours her heart
into being the perfect mother. From finding the
impossible birthday present. to being there for
every single moment-no one can replace her. Maya
is focused on bringing up the kids with traditional
Indian values. She tries to give the children the
very best that she can. And she makes sure that no
one else has a say in their upbringing.
Arjun Rampal as Aman - Aman is the man
stuck in the middle! He is well respected as a
professional. He adores his children and tries to be
there for them as much as he can. Unfortunately
his career calls him away at crucial moments. He is
determined not to make the mistakes with Shreya
that he made in his first relationship. It is really
important to him that it works out, and he gives it
his level best.
Kareena Kapoor as Sherya - Is a young
designer who is struggling to get her career started.
She is madly in love with Aman - one of the top
commercial photographers. She is impulsive,
bright and unpredictable. Life with her is one
adventure after the other. She is an independent
thinker who finds the most unexpected solutions
to situations and problems. Her bubbly exterior
masks a tough core. Shreya is a survivor.
Diya Sonecha as Anjali - Snow white and
fairy tales are her reality. At six, she’s the apple of
her family’s eyes. Her innocence and simplicity
put a smile on their faces but when the evil witch
(daayan) enters her perfect fairy tale world, it
changes her understanding to reality and makes
her ask the question - do good witches also exist!
Nominath Ginsburg as Ankush - His
world is full of planets, books and stars. At 10 he’s
quite mature for his age but he never quite allows
anyone to probe into his heart. His father is his
hero and his mother his world and somewhere
deep down he wants his parents to get back but
when he’s thrown into this unusual situation, life
takes another meaning for him.
Aanchal Munjal as Aleya - At 13, staying
in a family without the presence of her father,
she’s the protective sister of the family and her
mother is her universe but when destiny puts her
in an unusual situation, the question remains
whether she will she be able to face the harsh
realities of life.

Synopsis:
‘Hello Darling’ is a film about three young, beautiful,
smart girls (Gul Panaag, Eesha Koppikhar Narang and Celina
Jaitley) who work in a fashion design company in Mumbai.
Each are targets of their lusty boss (Jaaved Jaffery) who
eventually manages to trap them all a sticky situation in
which all three are made to dance to his tunes. They must
find ways to wriggle out of his control and unite to cook
up their own scheme to be free of him and his notorious
intentions once and for all.
Who outsmarts whom is the basis of this fun filled
hilarious comedy with chart-busting music by Pritam &
lyrics by Shabbir Ahmed, Ashish Pandit & Kumar. The film
is directed by debutant Manoj Tiwari and written by Pankaj
and Sachin who wrote blockbuster comedies like ‘Apna
Sapna Money Money’ and ‘Kya Kool Hain Hum’.
Produced by Ashok Ghai under Mukta Arts banner, ‘Hello
Darling’ is a rib-tickling, feel-good film all the way. The
film also stars Chunky Pandey in a brief role. It is slated for
a 27th August release.
Character Sketch:
Gul Panag as Mansi - A career-oriented young
corporate woman who sheds much exuberance amongst
fellow co-workers. Despite the exploitations of her boss
Hardik, she clings very tightly to her job as she dreams of
one day making it big. She teams up with Candy and Satavti
to teach Hardik a lesson he is not soon to forget.
Celina Jaitley as Candy - A very sexy-looking
girl who works as a PA to Hardik, and has always been
misunderstood by her co-workers to be Hardik’s mistress.
She is very romantic at heart and looks after her flop rock
star boyfriend Rocky (Chunky Pandey). She later partners
with Mansi and Satvati in a plan to put Hardik in his rightful
place.
Eesha Koppikar as Satvati - She is a middle class girl
from Hissar, Haryana. She joins company as a fresher and
gets along instantly with Mansi, realizing the truth behind
Candy’s stories, and becoming friends with both. Her entry
into the office is what acts as a catalyst in the three ladies
eventually bringing Hardik down on his knees.
Javed Jaffrey as Hardik - The 35 year old CEO of
the R B group of industries is an over-ambitious boss who
has manipulated his way up the ladder, leaving no stone
unturned to lure young, good-looking girls who work under
him to make them the prey of his lust.

His success story, star charisma and immense talent remain unparalleled but there is yet an-
other quality to Big B that makes him a cut above the rest-the fact that he values every mo-
ment of his success. In this piece, he introspects about the little joys of success and how they
are cherished forever.
“And I dream of the days when work was scrappy,
And rare in our pockets the mark of the mint,
And we were angry and poor and happy,
And proud of seeing our names in print”
I just chanced upon this little verse and felt it so apt in most of our lives, lives that
all of us have led and experienced and enjoyed, irrespective of what circumstances the
words may express.
Yes, we have all been through those days when we knew and felt
that the work that we were doing was not what we wanted to be doing
for the rest of our lives. We wanted work, we wanted to stand on our
own feet, we needed that independence, we needed to walk away from
being dependent on others, particularly family and parents. We took on
whatever came our way. It was a start. A beginning. If we saw a future a
continuity in it, we remained, if not, we quietly and most politely declined
it and went our way.
But those times were rare. The mark in our pockets of that mint
lasted but for the shortest period of time. There was the regular upkeep
and existence that challenged our earnings each month. There was the
paucity for the luxury and the fun that we could buy. It made us angry.
Angry because we had the desire, but not the pocket to afford it. Angry
because we saw others in more affluent situations and lamented the fact
of not being in their shoes.
But we were happy. Happy to be where we were, in whatever we were and whatever
we had. The discomfort of not being in the other league was diminished in the company
of compatriots who were also in similar conditions. Somehow there was a brotherhood
of those in the same boat and suddenly it all did not look so bad after all. It became

fashionable to say ‘we cannot afford it’. We said it without any remorse, but with a
strange sense of pride. It was acceptable that we did not have everything.
In a sense it egged us on to struggle harder, to work towards a goal that would
provide us, or put us in that elusive basket where all was not ready made for us.
And then the print ! The first print mention in a sporting achievement or small
mention of that theatre experience. An assessment a presence, a few kind words of
description ; the very first time to confront what others thought of you, not in private,
but in the realm of a medium that would be public ! Such a joy and feel of
importance. The exuberance of sharing it with colleagues, friends, family
and in private repeatedly. Its safe custody in that little drawer where
all the personal letters were neatly kept. Its presence under the pillow
for several nights and then finally to store it away reluctantly, to glance
perchance within a time span !
The quote is from C.sK. Chesterton ( 1874 - 1936 ) and it is titled the
Song of Defeat. Six years before I was born he perished, but his thoughts
relevant today in 2010 in a manner which he may never have ever
envisaged. He calls it a Song of Defeat. To me it is a song of victory, as I
am certain it would be for many others who found themselves perched
on the fence, about to slide across to the other side where the grass was
greener.
It has allowed me to look back. To reminisce, to wonder. It may seem
that I would have been through with it. It may still return, who knows.
But it still remains as a symbol to me of all that has an eternal value. One that needs to
be cherished, embellished and stored.
Thank you Lord for giving me the opportunity to look upon it in hindsight ..

A Time...’ has
come for both
commercial and critical
acclaim. How does it feel?
I am delighted with the
audience response for the film.
I always look forward to the
feedback I get from my fans
and audiences. Their response
is an indicator that my hard
work has paid off.
Your characterization and
look in the film has also
come for appreciation.
As for the characterization,
it was entirely director Milan
Luthria’s vision. I did work on
my look for the film, the long
hair, the style of dressing. The
film is based on the 70’s so we
decided that bell bottom pants
and high heeled shoes, would
be apt in keeping with the
period. Also, we all researched
on the look. Alim Hakim who
styled my hair remembered
what the look was in the 70’s,
when he would accompany his
father on the sets. Designers
Rishi and Manushi worked
on the costumes, so it was a
combined effort.
How much did you know
about Haji Mastan as a
man before you attempted
the role?
I knew that he was a
smuggler but one who was
very good at heart. Besides, he
only indulged in the smuggling
of banned goods. In terms of
the character, I felt that he
had a very different persona in
comparison the other dons, one
who was mean and at the same
time romantic. On one side he
had a wry sense of humour,
on the other he was very soft-
hearted, which is why people
took advantage of him. He has
a wry sense of humour and at
the same time he is a softie at
heart and that’s why people
take advantage of him.
How was it working with

am making efforts in that
direction. I am the kind of

one step further beyond my

NEWS Zoya Akhtar’s cast zooms off on long drives every day

F
ilm-maker Zoya Akhtar has devised new ways to ensure
that the actors starring in her film, Zindagi Mile Na Dobara,
share a great comfort level and are in tune with each other.
Since her movie is about a road trip of three best friends played
by Hrithik Roshan, Farhan Akhtar and Abhay Deol, besides the
lead girls Katrina Kaif and Kalki, Zoya has asked them to hang out
together everywhere
they go.
She even asked
the five actors to
take long drives
together so that they
could get friendly
with each other and
the chemistry would
eventually reflect on
screen. Besides, Zoya
has set up the sets at
a 40 to 45 minute
drive from the hotel.
This way the actors
leave together for
the shoot and return
together. The entourage follows them later. This gives them more
time with each other.”
Unit sources inform that the actors are having a blast on the
sets with each other ever since. In fact, they have all become so
comfortable that they don’t go out without each other so much
so that they even cycle and gym together these days. That sure is
a novel way of making work an enjoyable experience. The other
directors need to take a cue from Zoya.

Pooja Batra: Connecting

Hollywood & Bollywood!

A
ctors who are looking at Hollywood as their final destination may
well be happy to learn that they can get a helping hand from Pooja
Batra in their Hollywood endeavours. The former model-turned-
actress who was seen in super hit films like ‘Virasat’, ‘Kahin Pyaar Na Ho
Jaaye’ and ‘Haseena Maan Jaayegi’, and settled in Los Angeles after her
marriage, has now started her own casting agency, Glow Bell Inc., in L.A.
We now hear that her company is helping LA casting, a full-fledged casting
agency to set shop in India.
Pooja will be spearheading the India operations and will thereby render
a platform to industry professionals to get one step closer to Hollywood.
“People who are looking to cast Indian models or actors in Hollywood or
even Indian productions will now have a professional helping tool to select
the talent from a pool,” Pooja explains.
Incidentally, Pooja’s company had acquired Sylvester Stallone and
Denise Richards for Sajid Nadiadwala’s ‘Kambakkht Ishq’ last year. With
such interesting work under her kitty, Pooja Batra gives the phrase ‘Beauty
with brains’ an altogether new meaning.

“I have discovered a friend for life in Neil”
Her Bollywood debut, ‘Om Shanti Om’, proved to be a smashing success and made
Deepika Padukone an overnight box-office sensation. Her subsequent string of successes
further consolidated her position but none of them matched up to the success of her
first film. The ambitious model-turned-actress has a line-up of promising releases this
year starting with ‘Lafangey Parindey’. She talks about this and more.
Y
ou seem to be on a career
significant
high with four significant
releases this year. Which
one of them are you
particularly looking forward to?
I would say that the year started on
a very promising note with the success
of ‘Housefull’. I now have Yash Raj
Films ‘Lafangey Parindey’ up for release,
besides ‘Break Ke Baad’ opposite Imran
Khan and ‘Khelein Hum Jee Jaan Se’
opposite Abhishek Bachchan. The
interestingly feature of all these films are
that they all belong to different genres
and each of them has unique role for me.
I am glad that I am being offered different
roles and getting an opportunity to work
with the best of directors.
Tell us about your role in ‘Lafangey
Parindey’.
I play a blind girl by the name of
Pinky Palkar who is confident, ambitious
and a fighter to the core. She knows what
she wants and where she is heading for

to the character because that’s the way I
am made. Like Pinky, I don’t give up on
things easily and pursue my goals to the
very end.
Reportedly the role was a tough
challenge and you had extensive
workshops before you started
shooting for the film.
It is true that the role of Pinky Palkar
was not particularly easy. I play a blind
girl and doing all the stunts being blind

was not easy. I would often close my eyes,
practice them and later try them once
again with my eyes open. Nevertheless,
the fact that I came from a sports
background made things fairly easier for
me. My demeanor can be lady-like but
the moment I put on my track pants and
T –shirt, I can be as good as the boys
on the field with a ball. My knowledge
of skating and Bharat Natyam, came
in handy, in the way I could pick up
the nuances of the character. Also, the
entire group of fi ve boys and girls had to

a blind girl. One wrong move could mar
the movie. So we had intense work shops
with blind people before we took on the
movie.
You have attempted stunts in your
last film too. How different was
this experience?

I trained in martial arts for the role. I
did enjoy the stunts at that time too. But
somewhere there is a child in everybody.
There are days when you want to go one
step beyond your perceive limit and take
up the challenge, which is what I did in
‘Lafangey Parindey’.
You have also been training in
scuba diving and paragliding. Is it
for the same movie?
No it was merely to get out of the
phobia of creepy crawly creatures that I
decided to train in scuba diving. Now that
I am a certified diver, I have overcome all
such fears. Likewise, I had fear of heights
so I decided to take up paragliding. It
was a wonderful experience.
How was the bonding with co- star
Neil Nitin Mukesh?
I think I have discovered a friend for
life in Neil. He is a wonderful human
being and the bonding we share has come
across wonderfully on screen. We got
along really well during the shoot. There
was an accident scene, where I needed

a different kind of make-up and Neil
was trained in it so he told the director,

At times we actors do listen to scripts

time. I am indeed doing a film with John
Abraham which will be directed by Rohit
Dhawan but yes, I am dying to work with
Salman.
Do you go by your gut instinct when
it comes to choosing roles?
Not really. I am an actor and I need
to be convinced about the character I am

the process and also be part of projects
with the best of directors. Tomorrow I
should not have doubts whether I have
chosen the right film. Fortunately, most
of my films except ‘Chandni Chow To
China’ have done well. This is my eighth
film and I would not know whether it will
be a box-office success. But I do want
people to stand up and acknowledge my
talent. I think the process has already
started after ‘Love Aaj Kal’. That is what
Adi (Chopra) said when he offered me
this role. I feel that if I am indeed getting
great opportunities, it means that I am
doing good work.

to present a programme ‘Jodi Number One’, which
focuses on the importance of relationships. ‘Jodi
number One’ will not only have Jodi’s of husbands

competition for intermediate schools in
Auckland on 16th October at Dorothy
Winston Theatre at 7 p.m. The name of the
show is DESI INTERMEDIA- DA Dance OFF.
This is the first ever dance competition for kids.
It is the brainchild of Azhar Adam a dancer,
choreographer, model, and now an actor with
‘Pump up-The Mandali, who felt that there was
a genuine need for a platform to showcase young
talent in New Zealand.
The major prizes for the winners are $1,000
for the first prize, $500 for the second and $250
for the third winner, besides 10 other prizes. If

INTERNATIONAL RED CROSS LAUNCHES
APPEAL FOR PAKISTAN FLOODS

ew Zealand Red Cross today announced that it would support an international
emergency appeal to help people living in miserable conditions after the
extensive flash floods in Pakistan.
Calling for donations, New Zealand Red Cross International Operations Manager
Andrew McKie said, “The funds will help Pakistan Red Crescent Society branches
and volunteers to deliver food, health services, tents, tarpaulins, and water and
relief items including hygiene kits and cooking equipment”.
New Zealand Red Cross is making a contribution of $13,000 to the operation,
which will help 25,000 families for nine months. “Many families have been forced
from their homes and have been left with no means of support. They are living in
miserable conditions. This appeal will help the Red Cross deliver more food, water
and shelter materials,” said Mr. McKie.
One hundred percent of funds donated to the Pakistan floods through New
Zealand Red Cross will go to the international emergency appeal. New Zealand Red
Cross urges supporters to donate cash, not goods, so that the right relief items can
be sent to people in need as quickly as possible.

Migrants’ loan needs must be considered
L
abour Associate Ethnic Affairs spokesperson, Dr Ashraf Choudhary says the
Government must take into account the financial struggle migrant and refugee
families will face if it introduces changes in the interest-free student loan
scheme.
“Labour introduced interest-free loans in 2005 to give more Kiwis the opportunity
for higher learning. After promising to keep the scheme in place, Prime Minister
John Key is now hinting at a back-track,” Ashraf Choudhary said.
“Many skills and qualifications gained in migrant countries of origin are not
transferable in New Zealand, and therefore it is vital new migrants undertake study
here to achieve qualifications that are recognized,” he added.
“Earlier this week John Key spoke to students at Victoria University about
student loan debt, and suggested that the interest-free student loan scheme doesn’t
economically ‘stack up’,” Dr Choudhary said. “If National is toying with the idea of
bringing back interest it must seriously look at the deterrent impact that will have on
migrant and refugees gaining an education which is beneficial to their family, future
security and to New Zealand,” he revealed..
According to Dr Choudhary, student loans already create long-term impacts on
the financial security of families, such as buying a home and saving for retirement.
“Women also take twice as long on average to repay their loans, particularly when
they take time out of the paid workforce to have children,” he said.
