ABSTRACT

Signalized intersections are the most common type of junctions found in Malaysia for its
practicality in distributing traffic flow. It can be one of the measures to improve the
traffic movement, safety, reducing traffic conflict points, delay and traffic congestion.
This paper about designing unsignalized to signalized intersection. The problem justify
when many complaint about geometric design, flow and safety at the KM 20 Jalan Batu
Pahat Kluang (F050) intersection. The specific study location is at intersection to
Bandar Universiti. The data such as volume, lane width was observed and also conducted
road facilities audit. Then, the data analyzed using SIDRA software. From the analysis, it
show that performance at the intersection is good because the LOS get as A and B.

INTRODUCTION

An intersection is an area shared by two or more roads. Its main function is to allow the
change of route directions. Signalized intersections are the most common type of
junctions found in Malaysia for its practicality in distributing traffic flow. It can be one
of the measures to improve the traffic movement, safety, reducing traffic conflict points,
delay and traffic congestion.

The traffic control on a signalized intersection is performed by means of traffic light of

different colors (green, amber and red) that are repeating periodically. Conflict between
traffic participants are prevented by dividing the cycle time in intervals allocated to traffic
flows so that the conflicting flows dont get the right of way in the same interval.
(Slobodan Guberinic, 2008). Currently, the condition on the intersection is unsignalized
intersection. Some analysis carried out to suggest the signalized intersection as the
solution to this problem.

According to annual accident records for the site, note a steady increase in the number of
accidents per year. With the increase in population growth and increasing the number of
vehicles there will be increasing the number of incidents expected. Since this
intersection serves a large proportion of the population of the region, we need to raise the
level of safety of the road. Putting traffic signals will be the first steps proposed to
.achieve the goal

As described below we note that an increase in the rate of accidents from 24% to 26%
from 2005 to 2008 and a rise in the rate of accidents of the type of damage only from 791
to 1005 is good reason to look at ways to reduce material and human damage as possible

DATA COLLECTION

In this study, some data was conducted and collected at the intersection to Bandar
Universiti. The stage of data collection was divided into 3 group, listed as below:

(a) Volume observation

(b) Lane width
(c) Road Safety Audit

Volume Observation

The volume for F050 was observed to know the vehicle distribution at the intersection.
Data were collected during peak periods (morning peak: 7.30 to 9.30 am, afternoon peak:
12.00 to 2.00 pm or evening peak: 5.00 to 7.00 pm) on weekdays.

Land Width
The geometric parameters for the signalized intersections such as lane width was
measured. This measurement to get the figure on the site and as input for SIDRA
software.

Road Safety Audit

The audit was conducted as visual appraisal which is based on the road safety audit. The
picture at the site also captured to show the real situation.
.
DATA ANALYSIS

The data was analyzed using SIDRA software. SIDRA is a software that can be used to
design and evaluate signalized at-grade intersections, give way or stop control
intersections, single point urban-interchanges, signalized pedestrian crossing and
roundabout. The input for SIDRA using volume data, lane width and many other
parameters needed. But not all data needed to put because it can use default value that
was setting in the software.
Traffic signal controls are implemented for reducing or eliminating conflicts at
intersections. Signals accomplish this by allocating green times among the various users
at the intersections

RESULTS

As output, it produce performance or LOS (Level Of Service) at every approach of traffic

direction (show in APPENDIX A). The intersection approach used as T junction. From
the SIDRA output, it showed that all the LOS is good quality. The other output data was
listed in the table below.
