Masterbatch

Masterbatch (MB) is a solid or liquid additive for plastic used for coloring plastics
(color masterbatch) or imparting other properties to plastics (additive masterbatch).
Masterbatch is a concentrated mixture of pigments and/or additives encapsulated
during a heat process into a carrier resin which is then cooled and cut into a
granular shape. Masterbatch allows the processor to colour raw polymer
economically during the plastics manufacturing process.

The alternatives to using masterbatches are buying a fully compounded material


(which may be more expensive and less open to e.g. color variability of the
product), or compounding from raw materials on site (which is prone to issues with
achieving full dispersion of the colorants and additives, and prone to preparing
more material than what is used for the production run). In comparison with pure
pigments, masterbatches require more storage space and their lead times are
longer. Another disadvantage is additional exposure of heat ("heat history") to both
the carrier and the additive; this may be important e.g. for marginally thermally
stable pigments.

As masterbatches are already premixed compositions, their use alleviates the issues
with the additive or colorant clumping or insufficient dispersion. The concentration
of the additive in the masterbatch is much higher than in the end-use polymer, but
the additive is already properly dispersed in the host resin. In a way their use is
similar to uses of ferroalloys for adding alloying elements to steels.

The use of masterbatches allows the factory to keep stock of fewer grades of the
polymer, and to buy cheaper natural polymer in bulk.

The masterbatches can be fairly highly concentrated (in comparison with the target
composition), with high "let-down ratios"; e.g. one 25 kg bag can be used for a
tonne of natural polymer. The relatively dilute nature of masterbatches (in
comparison with the raw additives) allows higher accuracy in dosing small
amounts of expensive components. The compact nature of the grains of solid
masterbatches eliminates problems with dust, otherwise inherent for fine-grained
solid additives. Solid masterbatches are also solvent-free, therefore they tend to
have longer shelf life as the solvent won't evaporate over time. The masterbatch
usually contains 40-65% of the additive, but the range can be as wide as 15-80% in
extreme cases.

The carrier material of the masterbatch can be based on a wax (universal carrier) or
on a specific polymer, identical or compatible with the natural polymer used
(polymer-specific). E.g. EVA or LDPE can be used as carriers for polyolefins and
nylon, polystyrene can be used for ABS, SAN, and sometimes polycarbonates.
When a carrier different than the base plastic is used, the carrier material may
modify the resulting plastic's properties; where this could be important, the carrier
resin has to be specified. The usual ratio of masterbatch to the base resin is 1 to 5
percent. Several masterbatches (color and various additives) can be used
together.[1] The carrier can also double as a plasticizer (common for liquid
masterbatches) or a processing aid.

The machines are usually fed with premixed granules of the host polymer and the
masterbatch. The final mixing then gets done in the screw and extrusion part of the
machine. This is sometimes prone to adverse effects, e.g. separation of the
masterbatch and the base material in the machine's hopper. The masterbatch can be
also added directly to the machine's screw, as a free-flowing solid or in case of a
liquid masterbatch by e.g. a peristaltic pump. Such use of liquid masterbatches
allows highly accurate dosing and quick change of color between machine runs.

Masterbatches can be used in most processes, except rotational molding and


Plastisol and other liquid resin systems.

Color Masterbatch

Filler Masterbatch

Filler masterbatches (master batch) is calcium carbonate (Caco3) based filler


compounds used in plastic industries to modify various properties of the base
plastic or plastic polymers. These are specially formulated by compounding
blended polyolefins with ultrafine calcium Carbonate in the compounding
extrusion. It improves physical properties of polymers, reduces cost. Ultra fine
coated CaCo3 or talc filled masterbatches consists of Whole range in milky as well
as natural effects. These caco3 based filler masterbatches reduces cost and works
as anti-burn at the die lips at higher loadings. Filler masterbatch used for the
production of Raffia woven sacks , Blown film extrusion, injection & blow

MFI (Melt Force Index):

The melt flow index (MFI) is a measure of the ease of flow of the melt of
a thermoplastic polymer. It is defined as the mass of polymer, in grams, flowing in
ten minutes through a capillary of a specific diameter and length by a pressure
applied via prescribed alternative gravimetric weights for alternative prescribed
temperatures.[1][2] Polymer processors usually correlate the value of MFI with the
polymer grade that they have to choose for different processes, and most often this
value is not accompanied by the units, because it is taken for granted to be
g/10min. Similarly, the test load conditions of MFI measurement is normally
expressed in kilograms rather than any other units. The method is described in the
similar standards ASTM D1238[3] and ISO 1133.[4]
Melt flow rate is an indirect measure of molecular weight, with high melt flow rate
corresponding to low molecular weight. At the same time, melt flow rate is a
measure of the ability of the material's melt to flow under pressure. Melt flow rate
is inversely proportional to viscosity of the melt at the conditions of the test,
though it should be borne in mind that the viscosity for any such material depends
on the applied force. Ratios between two melt flow rate values for one material at
different gravimetric weights are often used as a measure for the broadness of the
molecular weight distribution.
Melt flow rate is very commonly used for polyolefins, polyethylene being
measured at 190 C and polypropylene at 230 C. The plastics engineer should
choose a material with a melt index high enough that the molten polymer can be
easily formed into the article intended, but low enough that the mechanical strength
of the final article will be sufficient for its use.

What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS)?


A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS) is a document that contains information on
the potential hazards (health, fire, reactivity and environmental) and how to work
safely with the chemical product. It is an essential starting point for the
development of a complete health and safety program. It also contains information
on the use, storage, handling and emergency procedures all related to the hazards
of the material. The MSDS contains much more information about the material
than the label. MSDSs are prepared by the supplier or manufacturer of the material.
It is intended to tell what the hazards of the product are, how to use the product
safely, what to expect if the recommendations are not followed, what to do if
accidents occur, how to recognize symptoms of overexposure, and what to do if
such incidents occur.

How CaCO3 filler Compounds/Masterbatch allow cost saving?

Economical benefits of the use of CaCO3 Filler Compounds is used for filling in
plastics to replace a part of a virgin polymer that is very expensive.

In fact, in a real production, a number of factors connected with CaCO3 Filler


Compounds would lead to cumulative cost savings.

The price of calcium carbonate master batch is remarkably lower than


those of virgin polymer being filled; hence virgin plastic displacement
with CaCO3, at an optimal filling ratio, will result in noticeable cost
reduction of a polymer composition.
The natural whiteness of CaCO3 allows filler masterbatch to function as
a white pigment, thus helping to reduce and, in certain cases, completely
avoid the addition of expensive TiO2 masterbatch.
CaCO3 filler masterbatches may also effectively substitute, partially or in
full, some of the expensive functional additives, for example, antiblock
or anti-slip additives. Reducing filling ratio or fully replacing said functional
additives and/or white masterbatch will contribute to extruders life extension
since additives in question are harder than CaCO3.
Using CaCO3 plastic processors will be able to shorten production cycle and
increase extruder productivity, while reducing its load, thus saving energy
costs.

Linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE) is a substantially linear polymer (polyethylene), with


significant numbers of short branches, commonly made by copolymerization of ethylene with longer-
chain olefins. Linear low-density polyethylene differs structurally from conventional low-density
polyethylene(LDPE) because of the absence of long chain branching. The linearity of LLDPE results
from the different manufacturing processes of LLDPE and LDPE. In general, LLDPE is produced at
lower temperatures and pressures by copolymerization of ethylene and such higher alpha-
olefins as butene, hexene, or octene. The copolymerization process produces an LLDPE polymer
that has a narrower molecular weight distribution than conventional LDPE and in combination with
the linear structure, significantly different rheological properties.

first grade of polyethylene, produced in 1933 by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) using a high
pressure process via free radical polymerization.[1] Its manufacture employs the same method today.
The EPA estimates 5.7% of LDPE (recycling number 4) is recycled.[2] Despite competition from more
modern polymers, LDPE continues to be an important plastic grade. In 2013 the worldwide LDPE

High-density polyethylene (HDPE) or polyethylene high-density (PEHD) is


a polyethylene thermoplastic made from petroleum. It is sometimes called "alkathene" or "polythene"
when used for pipes.[1] With a high strength-to-density ratio, HDPE is used in the production of plastic
bottles, corrosion-resistant piping, geomembranes, and plastic lumber. HDPE is commonly recycled,
and has the number "2" as its resin identification code.
In 2007, the global HDPE market reached a volume of more than 30 million tons.[2]

What is Masterbatch ?

Masterbatch is composed with excessive chemistry accessory ingredient, carrier


resin and dispersants. Color masterbatch is made of ultra quantity of pigments
(dyestuffs) which carries evenly in the resin.

Color masterbatch main components:

First, Pigment
Generally pigment is divided into organic colour pigment, like phthalocyanine
green and the inorganic colour pigment like oxidation iron oxide red and the
titanium. Dye like reductant pink, scattered orange and so on. Polyolefine
and PVC color masterbatch use the pigment, generally speaking that the dye
cannot use in the polyolefine coloration, otherwise it will cause the serious
migration.

Second, Dispersants
Dispersants mainly makes the pigment surface moist which benefits further
dispersing in the pigment, and stabilizes in the resin, at the same time it must have
good compatibility with the resin, and does not affect the coloring product quality.
Polyolefine color masterbatch of dispersant generally adopts the low molecular
polyethylene wax or zinc stearate and so on. Engineering plastics color
masterbatch of dispersant usually adopts the heteropolarity low molecular
polyethylene wax, magnesium stearate, and calcium stearate and so on.

Third, Carrier resin


Carrier resin makes the pigment uniform distribution and causes the color
masterbatch to be granular shape. Choosing carrier must consider the compatibility
with coloring resin and also must also consider masterbatch should have good
dispersivity, therefore the carrier fluidity should be higher than the colored resin,
and simultaneously it affects the product quality after colored. For example, we
select similar high polymer with high melt index, enable the melt index of
masterbatch higher than the colored high polymer to ensure consistent luster in the
final product. WE choose LDPE resin (low density polyethylene) as the carrier for
PE, PP color Masterbatch, and modified PS as the carrier for PS, ABS
Masterbatch.
