 CONFIRMATION
Confirmation is about becoming a committed member of the local and worldwide Christian
family: it marks the point in the Christian journey at which you affirm for yourself the faith
into which you have been baptized and your intention to live a life of committed
discipleship. This affirmation is confirmed through prayer and the laying on of hands by the
confirming bishop. The Church also asks God to give you power through the Holy Spirit to
enable you to live in the way of Jesus.
The purpose of confirmation preparation is to ensure that those who are confirmed have a
proper understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Christ within the life of the
Church of England.
Preparation sessions encourage candidates to grow in their Christian faith through prayer,
reflection, studying the Bible, participating actively in the life of the church and demonstrat-
ing their faith in their communities.
Any adult or young person interested in attending a confirmation preparation group please
speak to David Cleeves (01765 689255). Attending the group does not commit you to
eventual confirmation - it is an opportunity to explore the faith with the possibility of
confirmation at the end of the course.

PILGRIM
Life is a journey. It begins when youre born. It ends when you die. You dont need to be a
Christian to know this. But as we get older we do know there is probably more road behind
us than ahead of us.
So what difference does being a Christian make? Well, the journey of life that ends in death
becomes a holy pilgrimage that ends in life. Christians believe that in Jesus, God has
walked this earth before us, and that with Jesus as our companion and guide we can travel
through life differently.
We can live and travel as pilgrims. We set our sights on Gods kingdom of justice and
peace; and as we journey home to God, the pathway of our life becomes more meaningful
and joyful, and the world a better place.
Pilgrim is a course designed to help you discover this Christian way of life. It unpacks the
basic message and teaching of the Christian faith, and also shows you how to pray and how
to live like Jesus. It does this in a way that is reflective and conversational. No one will
force the pace. But this course could change the perspective of your life; it might also
change its direction.
You wont be able to find out everything about the Christian faith in any one course. But
through the Pilgrim course material you will be able to reflect on some of the great texts
that have been particularly significant to people since the earliest days of the Church.
One of the greatest treasures of the Christian faith is the prayer we know as the Lords
Prayer. It has been said that the whole of the Christian gospel the whole of the good
news is in the Lords Prayer if we truly understand it.
This autumn there will be two courses running looking at the Lords Prayer one daytime
and one evening. IT IS NOT TOO LATE TO JOIN IN.

PHILIPPIANS 1: 21 to end For to me, living is Christ and dying is gain. If I am to live in
the flesh, that means fruitful labour for me; and I do not know which I prefer. I am hard
pressed between the two: my desire is to depart and be with Christ, for that is far better; but
to remain in the flesh is more necessary for you. Since I am convinced of this, I know that I
will remain and continue with all of you for your progress and joy in faith, so that I may
share abundantly in your boasting in Christ Jesus when I come to you again.
Only, live your life in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that, whether I come and
see you or am absent and hear about you, I will know that you are standing firm in one spir-
it, striving side by side with one mind for the faith of the gospel, and are in no way intimid-
ated by your opponents. For them this is evidence of their destruction, but of your salvation.
And this is Gods doing. For he has graciously granted you the privilege not only of believ -
ing in Christ, but of suffering for him as well since you are having the same struggle that
you saw I had and now hear that I still have.
MATTHEW 20: 1-16 For the kingdom of heaven is like a landowner who went out early in
the morning to hire labourers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the labourers for the
usual daily wage, he sent them into his vineyard. When he went out about nine oclock, he
saw others standing idle in the market-place; and he said to them, You also go into the
vineyard, and I will pay you whatever is right. So they went. When he went out again
about noon and about three oclock, he did the same. And about five oclock he went out
and found others standing around; and he said to them, Why are you standing here idle all
day? They said to him, Because no one has hired us. He said to them, You also go into
the vineyard. When evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his manager, Call the
labourers and give them their pay, beginning with the last and then going to the first. When
those hired about five oclock came, each of them received the usual daily wage. Now when
the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received the
usual daily wage. And when they received it, they grumbled against the landowner, saying,
These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the
burden of the day and the scorching heat. But he replied to one of them, Friend, I am
doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for the usual daily wage? Take what
belongs to you and go; I choose to give to this last the same as I give to you. Am I not
allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or are you envious because I am
generous? So the last will be first, and the first will be last.
