Before Night falls

Before night falls is and American film from 2000 and it was made by director, Julian
Schanbel. This is a drama genre film based on the autobiography written bye Reynaldo
Arenas, Before the night falls. It stars Javier Bardem, Johnny Deep, Oliver Martnez,
Andrea Di Stefano and Samtiago Magill as the main characters for the film. The music is
very well arranged. Carter Burwell composed the original soundtrack for the film. A few
of the locations for the recording of this film include scenes in Veracruz, Yucatn and a
few other Mexican states. In Yucatn the recordings took place at Progreso beach and
inside Mrida city. The story is about main character, Reynaldo Arenas: about his life
and work.
I find this film very nice, artistic, with an especially great narrative and with lots of
historical background. Enough information is provided for one thats never heard
anything about Arenas to be caught in his story. Maybe the scene I got really caught up
with is when Arenas has to hide his work for it no to be caught. I find this a great
moment because it speaks about the power of letters and it also talks about the counter
power of the system.
Reynaldo, as portrayed in the film, is a free soul. He lives a very simple life style, he is
fond of life and is passionate for writing. His natural talent involves every aspect of his
life, good or bad, about what surrounds him. I also like very much how Lazaro, his
partner, is portrayed. He is the other half of Reynaldo; always there for him. I think that
if Lazaro hadnt been living and supporting Reynaldo, hed never make it through his life
crisis.
Its important to make relevant the points shared with our unit. Weve finished
international relationships and we are just starting health and care. The film has a
strong message as far as relations with the international community goes. The message
the government has exposed themselves to others: as a strong and intolerant
government. And maybe the other side, which isnt completely related with the true
significance of the film, is a government who cares and has a high quality in medical
attendance for all those who need it. This film can touch you and really make you reason
about the real freedom around us, the art of enjoying life, about the homosexual
oppression that used to exist and still exists but in a different. Of course we can relate
many topics this film covers to our reality, for example: homosexuality, revolution,
passion and art. Though I think we are now in a constant revolution of ideas defined by
our contemporary world. Obviously this film is unique in many ways and differs from
other films. But starting from the cinematography and the story, this is completely
unique. Of course there are topics shared with other films like Merry Christmas, Mr
Lawrence which is a movie that portrays the story of a Japanese captain who falls for a
British soldier in a Japanese camp, but of course, he has to repress any feeling because of
the ways of his culture. Overall a great film and a good time spent watching. I do
recommend watching this film if you are interested in literature or Latin American
history. Even though we are separate country we all share a very similar history and
culture. My final observation for the film is to say; this film is an inspiring story of a
revolutionary man whose work has criticized a government and has explored the
relation between; art, politics and freedom.
I will possibly buy the book this film was based on because I am very fond of Latin
American literature and Im sure Ill enjoy it more than the film.
