MONITORING OF WATER QUALITY AND DUST FALL OUT

1. OBJECTIVE

To provide a Standard Operating Procedure for monitoring and recording data on water qualities and
dust fall out on all MCC Sites and Operations.

2. SCOPE

This Procedure is applicable to all MCC Sites and Operations.

3. RESPONSIBILITY

The Environmental Manager or where no Environmental Manager is appointed, the Safety Manager is
responsible for implementation of this procedure.

4. REFFERENCES

4.1 Legal Registers

4.2 DEFINITIONS

Acidity: the capacity of water to neutralise OH -.

TALK (Total Alkalinity): means a measure of the capacity of water to accept hydrogen ions. Alkalinity
thus serves as a pH buffer and as a reservoir for inorganic carbon and helps in determining water
fertility.

EC (Electrical Conductivity): expressed in mS/m (milli siemens per meter), and is a measure of the ease
with which a solution conducts electricity, this is used to assess the dissolved salt load present in the
solution.

pH: the negative logarithmic expression of the Hydrogen ion concentration in the water, used to express
whether liquid is an acid(pH < 7) or a base(pH > 7)

TDS: expressed in mg/l, it is a measure of the dissolved salt levels. It correlates closely to EC levels, TDS
can be estimated by multiplying the EC level by 6.5.

SS (Suspended Solids): measure of the undissolved floating solids in solution.

Ammonia: is the measure of the NH3 concentration in solution.

Ca: chemical symbol for Calcium, which is an alkaline earth metal. Measured in mg/l.

Cl: chemical symbol for Chlorine, measured in mg/l.

Mg: chemical symbol for Magnesium, an alkaline earth metal. Measured in mg/l.

Nitrates: a plant nutrient with the chemical formulae; NO3. Measured in mg/l.

K: chemical symbol for Potassium, an alkali metal. Measured in mg/l.

Na: chemical symbol for Sodium. Measured in mg/l.

Sulphates: the measure of the SO4 concentration in solution. Measured in mg/l.

Al: chemical symbol for the metal Aluminium (soluble). Measured in mg/l.

F: chemical symbol for Fluoride. Measured in mg/l.

Fe: chemical symbol for the metal Iron (soluble). Measured in mg/l.

Mn: chemical symbol for the metal Manganese (soluble). Measured in mg/l.

ASTM: American Society for testing and materials.

M/Q: Sampling Frequency Monthly (m) or Quarterly (Q).

5. ACTIVITIES

5.1 SURFACE SAMPLING

Surface samples will be sampled and tested on a monthly basis for the following: Acidity, TALK, EC, pH,
TCaCO3, TDS, SS, Ammonia, Ca, Cl, Mg, Nitrates, K, Na, Sulphate, Al, F, Fe, Mn.

5.1.2 A SABS approved laboratory must undertake the tests.

The results of the analysis must be recorded onto the Data Base for the Mine and backups must also be
made.

Samples will be analysed monthly by an SABS approved laboratory.

The results shall be recorded onto the MMS Data Base and a back up shall also be made.

The procedure for the field collecting of particulates settling from the atmosphere is based on the ASTM D1739
70 standard (American Society for testing and materials Collection and analysis of Dust fall).

The contractors responsible for the sampling will keep records of a checklist performed on the different sites.

Any defect samplers will be recorded in the CAR system.

Department of Environmental Affairs and Tourism - Guidelines on the maximum allowable concentrations for
dust fall-out (deposition):

Slight: less than 0.25 g/m/day

Moderate: 0.25 to 0.50 g/m/day
Heavy: 0.50 to 1.2 g/m/day
Very heavy: more than 1.2 g/m/day

Whenever dust fall-out (deposition) limits are exceeded (more than 0.5 g/m/day), a Corrective Action
Request from should be completed in order to minimise dust fall-out to acceptable limits (slight to
moderate deposition).
