Windows and Energy Savings For Home and Office

By Rich Hart

With the record-breaking heat this summer it's even

more important to make sure that your home and
business is energy efficient. When selecting new
windows there are 3 key measures used to determine
energy performance:
● U-value (or "U-factor") is the measure of the
amount of heat (in Btus) that moves through a square
foot of window in an hour for every degree Fahrenheit
difference in temperature across the window. The
lower the U-value rating, the better the overall
insulating value of the window.
● Solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC) is the measure
of the amount of solar energy that passes through the
window; typical values range from 0.4 to 0.9, and the
higher the SHGC the greater the solar energy that
passes through the window system. Windows with
high SHGC (above 0.7) are designed for colder Tinted glass coatings—Tinted glass and tinted window films
climates, while windows with low coefficients are have long been used in commercial buildings to reduce heat

Other factors to consider when ensuring that your

Are You Using Your
Time Wisely?
Most businesspeople are deluged with
demands for their time, resources, and
advice on a daily basis. Knowing which
requests to take on is a critical skill and can
be the difference between dragged down by
extraneous commitments and having the
time and space to do your job well. Before
saying yes to your next request, ask yourself
these three questions:

Am I the right person?

It may not be worth your time to do a
job yourself. For example, is it worth
your time to stuff envelopes for a
mailing, or is the value of the time you
would spend on the project more than
it would cost to outsource to a mailing
house. If it will take you 8 hours to do
your books, but it would take a
professional bookkeeper one hour,
you’re saving time and money by
outsourcing

Is this the right time?

What else is on your plate right now?
If you take the time to do this project,
will something else suffer? Remember
to take into consideration the domino
effect. When a new project or request
is added to your schedule, everything
gets shuffled.

Do I have enough information?

If you can’t do a job right, find
someone who can or wait until you can
do it correctly.

If the answer to any of these questions is

“no,” don’t take on the commitment. Pass it
on to the right person, schedule it for a future
time, or wait until you have the information
you need. There is no shame in saying no.
It’s a skill we all must master.

Summer Safety Tips for Pets
Provided to You by: Out of the Dog House Pet
Sitting and Dog Walking

1. Please leave your pets at home when you are running

errands on a warm day. A car will heat up to
dangerous temperatures within minutes even if you
leave the windows down or use air conditioning prior
to leaving.
2. Always keep in mind that lighter colored animals are
more likely to sunburn and have an increased risk of
skin cancer than pets with darker coats. Pets
spending a lot of time in the sun may require
sunscreen protection. Check with your veterinarian to
see what is appropriate for your pet.
3. Early signs of heat stroke are excessive panting,
staggering, increased heart rate, respiratory distress
or hyperventilation, dark red gums, lethargy,
increased body temperature and drooling. Heat is
more pronounced for pets with darker coats.
4. Remember that even with thick pads, asphalt may REMEMBER!!!
