Title of Journal : Communication and Classroom Management

1. Problem/Events

It was my second week of practicum in SK Abang Abdul Rahman, Saratok. I have gotten
more comfortable with the surrounding in the school escpecially the teachers and to be
exact the class that I am teaching. The problem that I am facing now is communication
and classroom management. Monday, 10th July 2017, it was my first lesson with the
pupils in class 3 Bestari for English. There is 32 pupils in the classroom. While I was
teaching, some pupils were not paying attention and kept walking in the class. I wasted a
lot of time kept on warning them to keep quiet and sit at their own seat. This situation
caused me having a hard time to continue the lesson because I wasted the time on the
problems. The objective of teaching and learning is also hard to achieve.

2. Analysis

Communication:

The level of profienciency in English language is so poor. Pupils are having problem in
understanding my instructions and questions. On the first day I entered the class, I asked
them to introduce themselves by telling me and the whole class their name, age, hobby
and where they live. They could not speak fluetly and not confident. Whenever I asked a
question, I need to talk slowly with some body language and repeat what I said for few
times. I found out that the pupils spoke Sarawak Malay more than English. The more I
tried to speak English the less effective the communication between me and the pupils.

Classroom Management:

Some pupils were not paying attention during the lesson. They kept talking to each other
and walking in the classroom when it was not necessary. Some of them were not
interested in participating the activities during the teaching and learning. They just sat at
their seat and did not give any cooperation. When I asked them why they did not
cooperate with their groupmates, they kept telling me that they did not know what to do
and not understand at all.

3. Suggestions for Further Actions/Improvements

Communication:

a) I will use simple words for my instructions and activities carry out during the lesson.
b) Simple WH-questions before the teaching and learning starts such as What is the
day/date today?, How are you?, What did you eat for your breakfast?.

c) Pupils should work in group so the class can be handled and communicate among
each other.

Classroom Management:

a) Prepare a lesson plan with fun activities besides getting new knowledge. For the set
induction, I can use riddles related to the topic.

b) Prepare or download a song related to the topic that they will learn on the day. The
song can be used as the warm up before starting their lesson. Through singing and
actions, pupils can communicate with each other indirectly by having fun together.

c) Use attractive teaching aids to attract pupils attection. For example, picture cards
can printed in a bigger size so it can be seen by the whole class.

d) Set rules for the classroom.

4. Duration for Further Actions

I will try to overcome my problem as soon as possible. Communication and classroom


management are so important for me during the whole practicum. These problem cannot be
solved immediately. I will find out how to overcome the problems by doing some research on
reading related articles and talk to my mentor.
