Its the time of the year to start thinking about flu
shots again. However, do more than think about it.
Get it done this year. Remember all the truths about
flu shots: you cant get the flu from it; side effects
are very rare; getting the flu is not like getting a cold.
Its much more serious and thousands die each year
from the virus. By the way, pregnant ladies should
get the flu shot too.
Do you remember that old TV show, The Bionic
Man? He had an eye that could do many marvellous
things. Well, a bionic eye is actively being research
and has recently been implanted into a blind man
with age-related macular degeneration. It allowed
the man to read large letters and see the edge
of the sidewalk while walking. Its early times
for the bionic eye but in the future, it will be as
commonplace as transplanting a kidney.
Measles is a very contagious disease. In Canada
in 1998 we thought it was gone from the country
but recently more measles cases have turned up.
In adults, the virus is rather benign but in children
it can be deadly because it can lead to pneumonia,
inflammation of the brain and hearing loss. Be sure
your child is immunized against measles.
Cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating ingredient in
marijuana was scientifically tested in a study on
children with Dravets Syndrome, a form of epilepsy.
It was given in a standardized liquid form and found
to reduce the seizures significantly in the group
getting the drug versus those in the placebo group.
This looks promising for those with epilepsy and
hopefully standardized forms of the drug will be
available soon.

It wasnt so much the straw that broke
his back, but a 310-pound pyramid rock.
As I was warming up for the event,
my back locked up on me and I couldnt
pick it up, said Sauve. I think I moved
it one foot, whereas Ill typically carry it
over 250 feet.
Last year, when he captured the na-
tional title, Sauve spent the better part
of two months preparing for the event.
CANDIDATES
This year, Sauve jammed in six differ-
ent strongman events into the past two
months, along with travelling halfway
around the globe, as he prepared to de-
fend his title.
I was just too burnt out, he said.
Sauve landed back at Calgary Interna-

tional Airport two days before leaving
again for New Brunswick. The local lift-
er had just returned from the Strongman
Champions League World Champion-
ship U105 and U90kg event Sept. 8 and
9 in Kokkola, Finland.
Attending the international event as
an invite and as one of two Canadians,
Sauve was matched against 20 other lift-
ers from Australia, England, Poland and
New Zealand, among other countries.
Sauve was lucky just to make it to the
first event of the two-day competition.
The night before the show, Sauve
was sick as a dog from food poisoning.

in Iceland before returning home.
But all the competitions began to add

With one event remaining, the goal of
defending his title might have slipped
