hall meeting Sept. 23, where Conservative Mem-
ber of Parliament (MP) for Carleton (Ont.) and
Shadow Finance Minister Pierre Poilievre ad-
dressed the proposed federal government tax
changes controversial proposals described as
closing unfair loopholes by Liberals, yet seen as a
cash grab by Conservatives.
The new tax changes would illustrate the larg-
est reform of the Canadian tax system in 40 years,
with a 75-day consultation period, and result in a
possible monetary gain of several billion dollars
annually. Yet critics argue the tactic is an attack
on small businesses, those with less than 100 em-
ployees.
Outraged farmers, lawyers, small business own-
ers and doctors had the opportunity to speak with
Poilievre on the effects the changes pose on their
family members, on retirement and succession
plans.
This illustrates yet another example of gov-
ernment attempting to take more of what other
people have earned and put it in the position and
control of politicians who have not earned it, said
Poilievre.
Theyre attempting to ram it through in 75 days
of so-called consultation. A consultation when
our farmers are on their fields, and will end when
many of them will just finish their harvest. A con-
sultation that happened right when our tourism
sector was busy serving Canadians on vacation,
and a consultation that did not reach out to peo-
ple who are going to be most affected.
Under the Trudeau government, the proposal
introduces three changes: address income sprin-
kling, limit the use of private corporations in mak-
ing passive investments and limit the ability to
convert a regular income into capital gains.
While the government stands to generate $250
million per year from income sprinkling where
small business owners use their business to trans-
fer money to family members in lower tax brack-
ets a whopping $3 billion a year is estimated
to come from reforming taxes on passive income.
Yet questions remain unanswered on the details
of the proposed changes. Poilievre has been try-
ing to get some clarification on what these chang-
es mean for spouses and other family members

While 81-year-old Doris Audet cer-
tainly enjoyed the entertainment at
this years Senior Power, she also used
the outlet to gather information on
some pressing issues she and her hus-
band are facing.
Audet was among 94 seniors to at-
tend last weeks event, which was
geared towards providing information
to seniors on local resources to im-
prove quality of life.
Currently Audet is facing a crisis at
home regarding the possible loss of
her drivers license, which could affect
her ability to stay self-sufficient while
dealing with the lack of transportation
an ongoing concern in Strathmore.
Right now, my husband and I are
dealing with transportation, said Au-
det, who attended Senior Power two
years ago. The family is thinking that
its time to not be driving and thats
a big issue. Its really hard to give up
your independence. Im still trying to
make a good life and keep my inde-
pendence.
The Senior Advisory Committee is
currently in discussions to address the
problem of transportation. The com-
mittee was one of 35 vendors with a
booth at the event, including the Town
of Strathmores Family and Communi-
ty Support Services (FCSS), the Strath-
more and District Historical Society,
Wheatland Lodge and the Strathmore
Municipal Library.
The people there were really en-
gaged and interested and we had a
lot of people who didnt realize that
they could get E-books for free with
their library cards, said Rachel Dick
Hughes, director of library services at
the Strathmore Municipal Library.
For us its wonderful to be able to
get our message out and get people
excited about using the library. I think
it gives seniors a really good view of
what is available in Strathmore for
them, and services and organizations
they can access that maybe they dont
know about.
The library and the Wheatland So-
ciety of Arts (WSA) participated this
year by providing interactive sessions.
While WSA got seniors involved in a
paint project, the library focused their
presentation on informing Strath-
mores population on the available
services at the library. Those in atten-

all the passive income that you earn on
your investment income within your
company will now be taxed twice; once
inside the company at a rate of 50 per
cent of whats left.
The total taxation on passive income
held within a company is expected to
rise as high as 72 per cent.
Furthermore, the reform would create
an incentive to sell a small business to a
non-family member where capital gains
remain taxed at 25 per cent, rather than
face an increase by selling the asset to a
family member.

because there are certain challenges to
doing that anyway, but what happens is
that I have to pay my own. I dont get

Wheatland County to provide feedback on growth management board

The Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB)
is moving forward, and part of Wheatland County
is included in their plans.
The board released the Calgary Metropolitan
Region Board Regulation to municipalities on
Sept. 19 with the intent of receiving public com-
ment and review of the regulations.
Alberta Municipal Affairs wants to know what
the public thinks of the soon-to-be mandated
Growth Management Board (GMB) for the metro-
politan areas of Calgary and Edmonton.
When the proposition was originally given to
the municipalities earlier this year, their intent was
made to allow for a 60-day public consultation
period. Now, with the late arrival of the written
regulation and a time crunch of having informa-
tion gathered before municipal elections on Oct.
16, the public has been asked for written feedback
to be received by municipal affairs by Oct. 2.
Wheatland County council reviewed the infor-
mation on the regulation during their Sept. 19
regular council meeting. However, having only re-
ceived the regulation earlier that same morning,
Wheatland County staff and councillors felt it was
premature to fully discuss the regulation before
having a chance to go through it.
Staff and councillors alike were concerned about
the short 13-day deadline to pull together com-
ments and questions regarding the CMRB regula-
tions.
I agree we need to review it and staff needs to
review it to be honestly blunt, if we have anoth-
er meeting were wasting time. Were not going to
change anything, said Councillor Ben Armstrong.
Members of the public concerned with the regu-
lation were also requested to submit their com-
ments to Alberta Municipal Affairs by Oct. 2.
I guess Im a little concerned, said Alan Parkin,
Wheat County chief administrative officer about
the short timeframe. How does that give the pub-
lic an opportunity to put input into it? At the very

that governments have no money and therefore no job
without the taxpayer.

When was that last time your councillor contacted
you outside of asking for your support?
Did you even get to talk with your councillor in the
last four or eight or more years?
Did your communications get responded to in a
timely matter, or did you have to do the follow up on
questions or support you had asked for?
Do you think a response would be considered too
long after a week, a month or more? What do you think
is a reasonable expectation?
Are promises made in the past by council still not
happening one, five, 10 ,15 or more years later?
Do you find that youre having to chase these prom-
ises as a constituent?
Do you feel that youre getting equal and fair repre-
sentation no matter what career you do to support the
county tax base?
Your councillor is accountable to you, so question
them if they stop by to ask for your support, or simply
call them if they dont stop by. They work for you as an
employee your taxes pays their compensation.

GMBs are intended to ensure effective and effi-
cient regional collaboration and coordination deci-
sion-making. Part of the GMBs mandate is to pro-
mote long-term sustainability of the region; ensure
environmentally responsible land-use planning,
growth management and efficient use of land; pro-
mote the economic well-being and competitive-
ness of the regions; develop policies regarding the
coordination of regional infrastructure investment
and service delivery; and develop policies outlin-
ing how the board shall engage the public on the
growth plan and service plan.
Several parts of the regulation added as notes to
outline the sections of the Municipal Government
Act that apply to GMBs include the fact that
Municipalities must not take actions that conflict
with or are inconsistent with the growth plan. If
the municipality does so, the Board can order the
municipality to stop as the growth plan prevails
over municipal statutory plans among other
things.
It is also noted that each participating munici-
pality has one vote, and for a GMB vote to pass,
two-thirds of GMB member municipalities must
vote in favour. The municipalities voting in favour
must represent at least two-quarters of the regions
population.
Most councillors will tell you they also run a busi-
ness and/or work at other things so their time at this
job is certainly not 100 per cent consuming and is cer-
tainly interesting to note that getting re-elected is a
priority which would indicate there is a worth-while
benefit in doing this sometimes thankless job.

Regional water project Phase 1 complete

The Wheatland Regional Corporation (WRC) is
pleased to announce the official substantial com-
pletion of the projects first phase to deliver a reli-
able and cost effective potable water supply to the
Hamlet of Gleichen and rural users in the region.
The project consists of raw water intake and raw
water reservoirs; raw water pump station and raw
water pipelines; water treatment plant upgrades
and potable water pump systems; and water sup-
ply pipelines.
For its importance to enhance the water services
in the region, the project is supported by all levels
of governments: federal, provincial and municipal.
First phase is funded by the provincial government
under the Water for Life program, and the munici-
pal local governments of Wheatland County and
support of the Villages of Rockyford, Standard and
Hussar.
Alberta Minister of Transportation and Minister
of Infrastructure, Brian Mason, in a brief statement
last year said, Our government is proud to sup-
port the Wheatland Regional Water Pipeline, an
example of leaders coming together in the com-
mon interest of their communities. Access to clean
drinking water and water-wastewater treatment
systems is essential for all Albertans and their
quality of life. We will remain focused on invest-
ing in Albertas public infrastructure, so that our
province continues to serve the needs of Albertans
today and for generations to come.
WRC highlights the support and commitment
of the province to the project that it is delivered
on time with the successful tie-in to Gleichen and
supply water to the hamlet. The province had de-
livered the funds in a timely manner that resulted
in reduced cost to the project and delivery of the
services.
Promise was given by the WRC last year to have
the first phase completed and today we deliver the
services to Standard, Gleichen and rural users.
Today marks a very important milestone for
Wheatland Regional Corporation with the flowing

rural residents along the pipeline, said Darcy J.
Burke, WRC chairman and mayor of Rockyford.
During the town hall meetings, the board com-

Decision made on curbside
solid waste and recycling carts

Much debate and weeks of discus-
sions were put to bed last week, when
Strathmore town council landed on a
decision regarding automatic curbside
solid waste and recycling carts.
Despite a time crunch, as the service
provider is said to start the curbside
retrieval system for waste in January,
council requested more information
at a lengthy Committee of the Whole
meeting Sept. 13.
Then, at the regular council meet-
ing last week, the public officials felt
comfortable with the information pro-
vided to move ahead with negotiations
to obtain only the 240 litres (L) black
curbside waste recycling carts, along
with a future user-choice option for
residents.
It was mentioned before, but its
worth mentioning again that the ide-
al solution was by far the most com-
prehensive, the least expensive with
the best guarantees overall; that was
something that we decided to live
with, said Councillor Denise Peterson.
Automatic carts range in size from 50
L to 360 L. Administration was tasked
to provide information specifically fo-
cused on the waste management plan
utilizing bin sizes 120 L, 180 L and 240
L.
As a result, council was presented
with various options. The first possibil-
ity included starting out with a black
240 L cart for four months, after which
residents would have the choice to re-
ceive a green 120 L cart. Once council
makes a decision on when to roll in
the final stage, residents would then
also receive a 240 L blue recycling cart.
Another option would be to start off
with a 180 L black cart which holds
three garbage bags then move to a
user choice 120 L green cart, and even-
tually a 240 L blue recycling bin.
These are all based on the user
choice program that we want to im-
plement, on which we will be bring-
ing forth some more communication
for the community, said Mark Ruault,
director of infrastructure and develop-
ment services for the Town of Strath-
more.
The innovation here is by having
that larger size in the beginning and
then convert on that current program,
the 240 (L), we believe that that idea
of taking that for the first four months,
when thats the only cart you have, itll
give you a little more capacity because
theres going to be some challenges
and variables. Then ultimately (wed)
have that converted to recycling. I
think its one of the great ideas that
weve come forward with.
At the Sept. 20 council meeting,
council approved administration to
begin negotiations to procure only the
240 L black carts with the understand-
ing that the community will have a fu-
ture user choice option.
The green cart, or composting, pro-
gram will start on April 1, 2018, and
will be followed by a blue recycle cart
program.

DISPOSAL
Council also voted to enter into ne-
gotiations with H&H Huxted for an
automatic curbside solid waste or-
ganic collection disposal service for
the Town of Strathmore. After examin-
ing seven bids, the five-year contract
would be awarded to H&H Huxted
for nearly $3.6 million, or $718, 272 a
year. Council approved to begin nego-
tiations between H&H Huxted and the

Its the time of the year to start thinking about flu

Do you remember that old TV show, The Bionic
Man? He had an eye that could do many marvellous
things. Well, a bionic eye is actively being research
and has recently been implanted into a blind man
with age-related macular degeneration. It allowed
the man to read large letters and see the edge
of the sidewalk while walking. Its early times
for the bionic eye but in the future, it will be as
commonplace as transplanting a kidney.
Measles is a very contagious disease. In Canada
in 1998 we thought it was gone from the country
but recently more measles cases have turned up.
In adults, the virus is rather benign but in children
it can be deadly because it can lead to pneumonia,
inflammation of the brain and hearing loss. Be sure
your child is immunized against measles.
Cannabidiol, the non-intoxicating ingredient in
marijuana was scientifically tested in a study on
children with Dravets Syndrome, a form of epilepsy.
It was given in a standardized liquid form and found
to reduce the seizures significantly in the group
getting the drug versus those in the placebo group.
This looks promising for those with epilepsy and
hopefully standardized forms of the drug will be
available soon.

Just over a month ago, 47-year-old
Rosa Fuentes was driving down High-
way 817 as she had done many times
since landing an overnight staff job at
Strathmores A&W.
This time, however, as she ap-
proached the s-curve on Aug. 15, the
mother of two began to panic when
she felt gravel under her tires. Her foot
hit the brakes and she began overcor-
recting, which caused the vehicle to
fishtail and roll three times into the
ditch, landing on the drivers side five
feet down.
Luck was on Fuentes side that night,
as she managed to climb out the pas-
senger side and walked away with only
two broken ribs and a broken vertebra
an incident that couldve easily taken
her life.
I was in shock, recalled Fuentes.
When I got home, my husband looked
at me and he saw the blood all over
my face, glass over my face and in my
arm. Now Im more cautious and Im
grateful for what I have. I could have
lost my life easily.
Fuentes managed to track down a
driver that took her home; from there
a friend drove her to the Strathmore
Hospital. As her injuries were too se-
vere, she was taken by ambulance to
the Foothills Medical Centre in Calgary.
Shortly after the accident, Strathmore
A&W general manager Ravi Avhad re-
ceived a phone call, yet it wasnt un-
til the next morning that he was made
aware of the full details of the accident.
With Fuentes stuck in a neck brace and
unable to work, Avhad and his staff de-
cided to raise awareness and money
to get Fuentes back on her feet and to
work.
That was a really bad day for ev-
erybody and so we decided we should
come up with something, he said.
It was really shocking for us. Every-
body worked with her, and everybody
knows her. This is an A&W family, its
not about the burger.
Through posters, word of mouth and
community generosity, the 30-member
restaurant staff was able to raise nearly
$2,000 to help with Fuentes soaring
medical bills.
The Carseland resident is already
staring at $5,000 in medical bills, has
taken over six bottles of over-the-coun-
ter pain medication since the incident,
and as her vehicle had over $2,000
worth of damage, she will be in the

Rosebud 2.0 builds on whats already strong

Frank Nickel, Rosebud Centre of the Arts executive direc-
tor, encountered joys, challenges and a steep learning curve
when he stepped into the role on May 1.
The best thing that happened is that I lived in Rosebud for
three months, Nickel said in early September. By the time
we moved to Strathmore, about a month ago, we felt like we
had a community here.
He focused those first months on learning all he could
about the organization and community. He was surprised by
how complex and inter-connected the organiza-
tion is. He was delighted to discover the longevity
and faithfulness of many Rosebud Theatre patrons
and donors. And it gave him joy to see how Rose-
bud fosters ongoing connections for people in the
broader community.
In his first days on the job, he also faced a huge
challenge: some past corporate donors gave else-
where this year, leaving Rosebud Centre of the Arts
(RCA) with a $50,000 shortfall.
So, Nickel and his team created the Shoot the
Moon campaign, implementing a new Text to
Give platform.

RV parking raises discussion

Following the comments of an indig-
nant resident who felt the enforcement
of bylaw 14-11 victimized RV owners
on his street, Strathmores town coun-
cil requested the regulation be brought
back for review with possible options
to address RV parking in residential
communities.
Strathmore homeowner Don Rhodes
received a letter in June regarding the
parking of his travel trailer in his drive-
way on Strathaven Drive. The letter
stated for the vehicle to be removed by
July 25.
Rhodes had experienced the same
situation last year and wasnt the only
one of his neighbours to be served
with the paperwork. Upon removing
their recreational vehicles at the end of
July, Rhodes became aware other resi-
dents in Strathmore were not receiving
the same treatment.
It seems to me whoever is pushing
the issue is only pushing one street in
this town, and thats Strathaven Drive,
but it comes down to everybody has a

On opening night, some audience
members asked how the actors made it
through performing the toughest parts
of the play. Some affirmed their own
beliefs on either side of the existence
of hell. And others addressed the plays
toughest question how we respond
to others who believe differently than
we do.
Thats the question Im still wrestling
with, days later. Whatever I believe,
about any issue, what does it require
of me to extend acceptance and fellow-
ship to those whose firm beliefs are the
opposite of mine? What will happen if
I accept them and what will happen
if I dont? And, most disturbingly, do I
sometimes use our differing beliefs as
a self-righteous excuse to dislike those
whom I find it inconvenient to love?
Beyond its portrayal of a church ser-
vice, The Christians is such a realistic
picture of human interaction, the story
felt to me like non-fiction. At times I felt
I was sitting in the presence of a living
conversation, listening to loved ones
engage in sharp conflict.

If there was any game film from last
years matchup, it would have been
torched a long time ago.
The last time the Holy Cross Collegiate
Hawks took on the J.C. Charyk Hawks
from Hanna, it was all kinds of ugly. The
scorekeepers shut the scoreboard off
once Hanna got up by 35 points. The
final score ended up 77-13.
Even if we had film of that last
meeting, I dont know how much of it
we could have used or could stand to
watch, said HCC head coach Michael
Annicchiarico.
In HCCs home opener, kicking off the
second season of football, HCC hosted a
J.C. Charyk squad that more than tripled
their roster size.
Despite coming in as underdogs, HCC
was an interception away from making
it a one-score game late, but fell in the
end 36-24 Sept. 22 at Holy Cross Col-
legiate field.
I heard about how bad they lost last
year, but I also heard that they had a
couple Grade 12s graduate, so I figured
we had a pretty good chance, said wide
receiver Ryan Orford. I thought we
played good enough in the first half to
give ourselves a chance in the second
half, and we nearly pulled it off.
With the game seemingly out of hand,
Tanner Hollingsworth marched HCC
down the field and was standing on the
six-yard line, looking to make it a one
score game. On the snap, he rolled right
to throw, but for the second time that
afternoon, his pass fell into the arms of
corner back Riley Hoffman.
If the pass would have fallen into the
hands of Jordan Kowbel, and HCC con-
verts the kick, it would have made it a
four-point game with less than 30 sec-
onds on the game clock. Meaningless in
the end, but it could have sent shock-

The week prior, they smoked the Provost Public
School Panthers 50-22. HCCs home opener was
cancelled after the Central High Sedgewick Public
School Rams dropped out of the league, extend-
ing the Hawks training camp by another week.
We took that extra week to run through a lot
more sets, get guys some work in different posi-
tions and made the best of it, said Annicchiarico.
I thought the work we put in showed up here
today.
HCC started slowly and trailed 15-0 after the
first quarter, as their offence took a couple drives
to warm up in the chilling weather.
Touchdown machine Jayden Hendricks ripped
off a 66-yard touchdown run, high-stepping a pair
of tackles along the left sideline. It was his first of
two touchdowns on the afternoon.
HCCs defence tightened up in the second half,
only allowing 13 points. HCC elected to give up a
safety deep in their own zone on third and long,
preventing an easy J.C. Charyk score.
Hannas left-handed quarterback loved to
scramble on second down, and was often chased
down or forced to exit the pocket and any plau-
sible down-the-field options.
Coach ( Josh) Jalbert has done a great job with
our defence this year, said Annicchiarico. Last
year, we were scared to hit guys at times, but we
have more confidence now and all the work he
has done with their fundamentals is really pay-
ing off.
HCC will look to build off their impressive
opener Oct. 5 when they take on the Heritage
Christian Academy Hawks in Calgary. Their next
home game will take place Oct. 12, when they
host the defending provincial champion St. Jo-
sephs Collegiate Crusaders.

Football Association Badgers
have enjoyed a cupcake sched-
ule to start their Mountainview
Football Conference (MFC) sea-
son.
Disregard the MFC season
opener against the defending
league champs. The past three
weeks for the Badgers includ-
ed a 62-0 white washing of the
Sundre Bisons, a bye week, fol-
lowed by a rematch with the Bi-
sons Sept. 23.
With a week off to prepare for
the rematch, the Badgers took
it to the Bisons once again, this
time 45-6 in Sundre.
They were definitely more
improved than what they were
two weeks ago, said Badgers
head coach Sean Seafoot. They
also had a few more players suit
up for them.
Similar to Kansas City Chiefs
head coach Andy Reid, Seafoot is
also brilliant coming off the bye
week. His Badgers (2-1) took a
couple drives to get going, but
got the ball moving once again,
led by their running back Luke
Henry.
Henry was questionable to
even make the bus trip north, as
he wasnt feeling up to snuff. It
took a little convincing from the
coaching staff to get him to suit
up.
We went up there with 17
players, so we needed him.
Once we got him in the game,
I knew he would be fine, said
Seafoot. He is a really quick
back and shot through the holes
once they opened up.
Also joining in on the touch-

and Brandon Middlemiss with

good three-point after attempts.

set for 2:30 p.m.
Both peewee and bantam Bad-
gers experienced a bye week
last weekend.
The bantam squad took on
the Calgary Bears in an exhibi-
tion match Sept. 20 at Shouldice
Athletic Park and fell 28-16 in
Calgary.
The Bears play out of the Cal-
gary Bantam League. This year,
the league created a C division
with not enough teams to play.
Before the year started, they
asked teams from around the
Calgary area if they were open
to the idea of an exhibition sea-
son, so the kids could still get
snaps. Strathmore obliged and
was supposed to host a rematch
Sept. 23, but Badgers head coach
Mike Hopp pulled the plug on
that idea after sustaining some
injuries Sept. 20.
We thought it would be a
good way to try and stay sharp
on the bye week, but we ended
up having kids play out of po-
sition without enough practice
time in and we had a few more
players go down with injury, so
we thought it would be a bet-
ter idea to rest up instead, said
Hopp.
The Badgers (0-2) will resume
their Central Football League
play Sept. 30 at home when they
host the Lacombe Raiders (3-0)
at noon.

Agricultural Service Board
Wheatland County invites membership applications for two
members at large to the Agricultural Service Board (ASB).
The ASB is a special committee appointed by council to address
agricultural concerns in the municipality. This is done through
developing and evaluating agricultural policies and programs to
meet the needs of Wheatland County. Applicants should be
well versed in a wide variety of agricultural areas and be able to
attend four board meetings per year plus the Regional and
Provincial ASB Conferences.
Membership appointments will be made by County Council at
the October organizational meeting for a term of three years
with eligibility for reappointment.
Deadline for applications is 4:30 p.m. on October 10, 2017.

the Community Enhancement Regional Board (CERB) with
appointment to commence November 01, 2017. One
representative from each of Electoral Division will be
appointed. The Community Enhancement Regional Board
consists of two members from each Electoral Division,
appointed by Wheatland County Council. Membership on
the CERB is appointed for a two year term with alternating
expiry dates. The Community Enhancement Regional Board

The Wheatland Warriors saved face by picking up a 4-2
win against the Bow Valley Timberwolves in South Cen-
tral Alberta Hockey League (SCAHL) action Sept. 23 at the
Strathmore Family Centre.
Yesterday, there were a few jitters. For many of our guys,
it was the first time at this level. It was also their first home
game of the year and there were a lot of nerves in gen-
eral, said Warriors head coach Cody Brown. We had a
good bounce back today and we put in a pretty damn good
60-minute effort. To get that this early in the season is good
to see.

New Zealand, among other countries.
Sauve was lucky just to make it to the
first event of the two-day competition.
The night before the show, Sauve
was sick as a dog from food poisoning.

Osachuk also turned up the heat on
the second day, carding a 91 to finish
with a 190.
We have a pretty balanced team with
a combined handicap of 24 or 25, said
Hawks head coach Darrin Dunlop.
Darrin isnt a teacher at HCC, so ath-
letic director Josh Jalbert filled in for
the head coach.
Darrin was on hand and monitoring
his foursome when they went on to
capture the 1A/2A South Country Zone
title Sept. 18 at the Turner Valley Golf
Club.
As a unit, the Hawks shot a 228, sev-
en strokes in front of the second-place
W.G. Murdoch Trojans.
Connor and Osachuk both carded
a 78 to lead the Hawks. They tied for
second, two shots behind Strathcona
Tweedsmuirs Alec Chunta.
Wilson shot an 82, good enough for
fifth. Orford placed in the Top 10 and
rounded out the foursome with an 84.
With only the three top scorers
counting, players were able to take a
few more chances than normal. Luck-
ily for the Hawks, those chances taken
didnt cost them at all, only benefited.
Scattered across four groups, Orford
was the second Hawk to tee off. Luck-
ily, the Hawk golfers were spread out
through four consecutive groupings, so
they were able to check in with one
another at certain tee boxes.
I knew we were having a pretty
good day, said Orford, who claimed
he hit his irons pure and made all his
putts. We would also text each other
throughout the day to see how we were
doing. Its awesome that we are the first
team to head to provincials in school
history.

Kings pick up historical win in opener

Over the past five years, the Cochrane
Generals rivalry with the Strathmore
Wheatland Kings has symbolized the re-
lationship between a hammer and a nail,
with the Generals playing the role of the
hammer.
That all changed during the Kings
home opener when they smoked the
Generals 6-2 Sept. 22 in front of a few
hundred fans at the Strathmore Family
Centre.
To say that the Kings were due is an
understatement.
The Kings last win against the Gener-
als came Nov. 9 of the 2012-2013 Heri-
tage Junior Hockey League season, when
the Kings cooked the Generals 4-1, again
on home ice.
That covers a span of four pre-season
games, 16 regular season contests and a
brief three-game sweep during the 2015-
2016 playoffs.
Snapchat filters werent even invented
yet.
We told the boys how proud we were
after the game. Theyre in there yelling
and screaming, having some fun, said
Kings head coach Shadoe Stoodley.
Its electric in there right now, said
George Montour.
Its pretty crazy in there right now, Im
not going to lie, said the winning goal-
tender Indiana Kelly.
That was a long time coming, stated
Kings captain Keenan Ogle.
The special evening began with a cer-
emonial puck drop by Mayor Michael Ell
and Strathmore Minor Hockey Associa-
tion president Natalie Haslund, to open
the new season as the Kings take over as
top dogs in the building.
The seats, steps, floor and ice surface
all received a fresh coat of paint through-
out the off-season, and some mint white
mesh replaced the old dirty nets.
And for the first time in franchise his-
tory, the Kings (1-0-1) took the ice in the
north end of the arena, as they take over
the midget AAA Bisons former locker
room.
It was in that north end of the rink
where the Kings took the lead for good,
when they banged in a pair of loose re-
bound goals mere seconds apart.
We noticed on the first couple of
shifts that their goalie wasnt handling
the puck too well, so we said we needed
to get to the net as often as possible,
said Ogle.
The Generals (0-2-0) were prime for
the picking, following their 10-3 shelling
by the Okotoks Bisons a night earlier.
The HJHLs leading scorer, Slate Ran-
som, returned for his final season, but
the Generals skated 10 rookies against
the Kings and were without four players
who aged out last year.

son, the Generals ventilated him for six
goals. He was making his third start
of the season, as he was buried in the
Kings depth chart. That season, he took
in opening night from the stands in his
street clothes.
This year, in his second career game
against the division champs, he was ac-
tive, stopping 36 shots for the win.
Our defence dominated the game in
front of me tonight. They opened the
lanes, let me see the puck and allowed
me to do my job from there, said Kelly.
With Brady Hoover graduating from
the league and Pierre Wiederhold not
even back in camp this fall, the Kings
staff gave Kelly a full vote of confidence
heading into the season.
Nobody works harder on or off the
ice than Kelly. When he goes home in
the summer, he is in goalie camps and
working out, always trying to get better,
said Stoodley.
His work ethic hasnt gone unnoticed
by his teammates either.
We had two pretty solid goalies to
start last year making it tough for him to
squeeze in. But he prepares more than
anyone, even just for practice. We are
glad we have him back there, said Ogle.
To a man, following their second-
straight home opening win, they men-
tioned that this monumental win over
the Generals would be diminished if they
found themselves Monday morning with
only two points in the standings follow-
ing their tilt with the Blackfalds Wran-
glers (1-1-0) the next evening.

Thomson. Five minutes later, Hayden

Kelly made 42 saves in his second start
of the season and stopped 3-of-5 shoot-
out attempts.
For Montour, his two goals and four
points in two games leads the Kings
early in the season. The 6-foot-3 slender,
pass-first forward is halfway to reaching
his goal total from last season.
We were fired up to play a couple ri-
vals this weekend. We have the chemistry
this year, great teamwork, a lot of fight
and power in this lineup, said Montour.
We want to win every time we step on
the ice.
The Kings next chance to satisfy Mon-
tours desire to win every game takes
place Sept. 30, when they host the Aird-
rie Techmation Thunder (2-0-0) at the
Strathmore Family Centre. Puck drop is
set for 8 p.m.

After a brief battle with cancer, Lois
Holt passed away on Monday, Sep-
tember 18th, 2017 at the age of 72. Lois was born in
Regina, SK and raised her family in Calgary, AB be-
fore moving to the Strathmore area. Lois is survived
and dearly missed by her husband Graham; three
children Tammy (Scott) Arbuthnott, Lonnie (Toni) Holt
and Candace Holt; five grandchildren Jordan (Shel-
by) Arbuthnott, Kim Arbuthnott (fianc Klay Rowley),
Linzie Parker-Holt, Graham Holt Jr. and Arissa Holt;
great-grandson Cash Arbuthnott; twin sister Joan
Abel; siblings Sharon Young, Jim (Ginelle) Band, and
Bob (Lorraine) Band; as well as numerous nieces,
nephews, fur babies and many great friends. Lois
was predeceased by her parents Peter and Irene
Band and her brother Jackie Band. A Celebration
of Life will be held at Cheadle Hall (302 Cousins St.
Cheadle, AB) on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at
