WHEREAS, the cultural, societal, economic, and political development of the Four
Corners Region originated with the migration to, and occupation of, these lands by groups of people
whose subsistence was integrally connected thereto; and
WHEREAS, these original occupiers of the Four Corners Region are recognized as being
indigenous to these lands and they, together with their descendants, are commonly referred to as
Indigenous Peoples; and
WHEREAS, the occupation of the Four Corners Region by Indigenous Peoples occurred many
hundreds of years prior to European exploration and settlement of, and subsequent expansion across,
the North American continent; and
WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples, including members of the Navajo, Hopi, Southern Ute, Ute
Mountain Ute, and Jicarilla Apache Tribes, continue to populate the Four Corners Region; and
WHEREAS, Indigenous Peoples have been, and continue to be, a prominent and an influential part
of the rich cultural, societal, economic, and political history of the Four Corners Region; and
WHEREAS, The City of Farmington benefits each and every day, in a multitude of ways , from
the contributions of Indigenous Peoples to the cultural, societal, economic, and political well-being of
the community at large; and
WHEREAS, many cities and towns in the Four Corners Region, and beyond, have designated the
second Monday in October as Indigenous Peoples Day, and it is appropriate that the City of
Farmington do so, as well.
