Dear Friends,
Welcome to a new season at the Ferst Center.
This season will mark my first year of programming–
a year that intensifies our focus and engages new
and existing communities.
When I came to the Ferst Center I noticed that
contemporary dance and jazz audiences had
developed almost organically to be the anchors of
the season. I saw an opportunity to bring those two
genres to a new level. I also found it interesting that
these performing arts are genuinely and uniquely
American–their roots are deep in the cultural
landscape that we as Americans cherish–they are
bold, adventurous and complex.
I am proud that we have sought to define our
programming in a way that is uniquely Georgia Tech–
engaging artists that simultaneously engage the
campus community and the greater Atlanta community.
Programs such as Dance Dialogues and Jazz Connect,
which create opportunities for deeper audience
interaction, are part of how we want to go beyond
the performance. In addition, our new residency
program, ARTech, will allow us to share the year-
long creative process of the very amazing young
choreographer Jonah Bokaer.
I hope that you have the opportunity
to dig deeper into one type of program or
sample the diversity of artists we offer.
I invite you to share in the journey this
year in as many ways as you can.
Cheers,
George A. Thompson
