In 1989, Joe and Faridah joined hands to form The Actors Studio. It was the beginning
of a dream and their lifelong pursuit to nurturethe arts in Malaysia. The Actors Studio
has been at the forefront of developing the infrastructure, content and talent pool that
is responsible forthe flourishing arts scene today.

MUKA Space was founded by Dr. Deric Gan and Easee Gan in November 2013.
The main objective of MUKA Space is to nurture the performing arts and to
produce groundbreaking Malaysian theatre. MUKA Space aims to develop
contemporary theatre arts and cross-disciplinary performances in Malaysia and to
encourage more collaborations between diverse art forms, locally and
internationally. In 4 years, it has 23 productions and 31 awards under its belt.

The Founder of MUKA Space
Dr. Deric Gan

Dr. Deric Gan is the first Malaysian to have a PhD in Theatre and Chinese Traditional Opera from the
highest arts institution in China The Central Academy of Drama in Beijing, China. He worked as a
director & playwright at the National Theatre Company of China, and lectures at the China National
Centre for the Performing Arts. In 2010, he founded Life Performing Study, with his decade-long
professional teaching experience in acting and directing. He has been invited to Europe many times to
participate in international drama exchange activities. He has directed more than 50 professional theatre
productions. His directional works feature the delicate emotional expressions through acting, dynamic
scenography and integration of Chinese and Western cultures. He won numerous awards in recent years.
He has won Best Director two years in a row at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards (Richard III & The
Dawns Here Are Quiet) and Best Director three years in a row at the ADA Drama Awards (The Dawns
Here Are Quiet, My Husbands Wedding & Dear Elena Sergeevna).

 The Founder of MUKA Space
Easee Gan

Easee Gan, or Gan Eng Cheng, co-founder and producer of MUKA Space. Currently the senior
production manager at The Kuala Lumpur Performing Arts Centre (klpac) and The Actors Studio
Malaysia, he has been actively involved in producing various award-winning Malaysian theatre
productions and festivals. "The Dawns Here Are Quiet" won 9 awards (17 nominations) in 2016 BOH
Cameronian Arts Awards and ADA Drama Awards including Best Drama. In 2017, Richard III won
the Best Production out of 70 productions for the year 2016 at the BOH Cameronian Arts Awards and
Best Drama at the ADA Drama Awards.

Peking Man

Directed by Dr. Deric Gan

In Peking Man, considered by many to be his
masterpiece, Cao Yu returned to his original style
of drama concerned with human beings and their
poignant relationships. Written with a sense of
poetry, this three-act play objectively presents the
decline of a once-prominent scholar-official family
and fiercely attacks the tensions and hypocrisy of
the Chinese gentry: the good-for-nothing

Directed by Easee Gan
Fiery Family debuted in 2014 under the direction of
multi-award winning director Dr. Deric Gan. This
one-act comedy was inspired by Tony Award-
winner, Yasmina Rezas Broadway black comedy
God of Carnage. The production later toured to
Perak as part of the L.E.D. Fiesta 2017 organised
by UTAR.

This 1980s play written by Russian writer Lyudmila
Razumovskaya shook the world when it premiered.
It was also the first play Beijing-based Malaysian
director Dr. Deric Gan presented in Malaysia
which went on to bag four awards including Best
Director.

Dr. Deric Gan adapted a 1972 Soviet war film
based on Boris Vasilyev's novel for the stage. The
film was nominated for a Best Foreign Film at the
