Homework # 3: DESIGN OF BEAMS AND ONE-WAY SLABS SUBJECTED TO

FLEXURE LOADS
Due on September 14, 2016

P1. A rectangular beam of 6 m span (centre-to-centre of supports), resting on 300 mm wide

simple supports, is to carry a uniformly distributed dead load (excluding self weight) of
20 kN/m and a live load of 25 kN/m. Using Fe 500 steel, design the beam section at mid
span and also perform a check for deflection control. Assume that the beam is subjected
to severe exposure condition.

P2. A beam ABC has AB = 6 m and BC = 2.5 m. It is simply supported on A, continuous

over B, and cantilever over the span BC. It is subjected to a dead load of 15 kN/m and a
live load of 20 kN/m. Selecting the sections for maximum negative and positive
moments, design the beam without compression steel. Assume M25 grade concrete and
Fe 415 steel. Sketch the arrangement of steel.

P3. Design the beam section in Problem 1, given that the overall depth of the beam is
restricted to 450 mm.

P4. Design an interior T-beam spanning 6 m, supporting a one-way slab of thickness 140 mm
as shown in Figure 1. The slab is subjected to a live load of 3.5 kN/m2 and a dead load
(due to floor finish, partition, etc) of 1.2 kN/m2, in addition to its self weight. Assume Fe
415 steel and M25 concrete and the centre to centre of beams as 4 m.

P5. A hall in a building is to be provided with a floor consisting of a continuous slab cast
monolithically with simply supported 300 mm wide beams spaced at 3.6 m c/c as shown
in Figure 2. The clear span of the beam is 10.0 m. The floor is to support live and

partition loads of 3.0 kN/m2 and 1.35 kN/m2, respectively, at the service state. The load
due to finishes may be considered as 0.65 kN/m2. Design the slab, if M20 concrete mix
and Fe415 grade steel are to be used.
