WrittenHouse In The News...
“Philly’s own hip-hop trio of Charlie K, Chris Conway and Kush Shalimar, better known as Written-
House, got thing started off right. ... The group is no stranger to the stage nor rocking big shows, and
certainly proved the fact to Sneaker Pimps attendees with a fantastic performance.”
James Johnson – Phrequency.com

“...Writtenhouse were one of the stellar acts booked by the Troc this year...I’d like to see the rest
of the Philly hip-hop community resolve to drop the bullshit bravado and take some notes from
Writtenhouse, who go about their business with a poetic vibe that’s more De La Soul than DMX.”
Stereotypewriter - Philadelphia Weekly
The De La Soul/Native Tongues-ish Germantown rap group Writtenhouse are the most dynamic,
fresh, ethereal and unique hip-hop artists in [Philadelphia]. TRUTH. People in the industry are
starting to notice, too, which is why the group...is being asked to open more and more high-profile
shows as time goes on.
Brian McManus - Philadelphia Weekly
“Philly got it’s chance to shine when the three man group Writtenhouse took the stage. The
group has quickly gained recognition throughout the city for an amazing stage show. The group
provided one of the best performances of the night, bringing the energy level noticeably higher.”
James Johnson – Phrequency.com
Having performed alongside notable hip-hop acts such as The Roots, The Wu-Tang Clan,
Public Enemy, and De La Soul, WrittenHouse is definitely putting in work to make a name
for themselves in the hip-hop world. If anyone is deserving of recognition in the under-
ground/independent hip-hop scene right now, it’s most definitely them.

Philly’s Writtenhouse Effect brings Native Tongue feel to Midtown

The exciting Philadelphia hip-hip trio Writtenhouse performs at the Midtown Tavern on October 23 as
a part of the popular Midtempo Thursday series. Show scheduled to begin at 10 p.m.

MC Charlie K., drum machine player extraordinaire Chris Conway (see video below) and producer
Kush Shalimar bring sophisticated J-Dilla-esque beats, complex lyrics and a positive feel-good vibe a la
the Native Tongues (especially A Tribe Called Quest) crew of the early 90’s.
Over the past few months Midtempo Thursdays has featured dozens of high quality local and national
unsigned hip-hop acts. Writtenhouse Effect is undoubtedly the cream of an already rich crop.

If you love pure hip-hop -- beats, rhymes and mic skills -- you should head to to this concert!
I know I will be there.

Those rhythmic scratches, the blasting sharp beats — on 2008’s Sunshine Philadelphia Vol. 2,
Germantown hip-hop trio Writtenhouse had a total late-’80s/early-’90s thing going on, echoing
De La and Tribe. Their hot-off-the-presses new cut, “Mic Check One Two,” hints that they’ve
graduated from Midnight Marauders to Beats Rhymes and Life, harnessing slick jazzy
keyboards and even-tempered rhymes to craft an introspective, mellow mood.

WrittenHouse – “Cigarette Smoke”

Published: June 2, 2010

One thing that was always disappointing to me was the generic press release stating that the
music you are about to hear is “not something you will hear on the radio.” Sure, that is great,
but how does that make you different? It seems like every emcee these days is trying to be “con-
scious” and “progressive,” when all they are really doing is repackaging an older hip-hop song
and calling it their own. And after reading their music submission, I thought Writtenhouse was
going to fall into that trap. Luckily after giving this joint a spin, I was pleasantly surprised. With
an awesome message about overcoming addiction, and some infectious production, “Cigarette
Smoke” is a song worth talking about. I am not sure where you will be able to
find this song in the future, but it surely helps by placing Writtenhouse
on my radar.

The WrittenHouse Experience:
WrittenHouse’s performances are unique in that instrumentation during their sets is live; each
beat is crafted before the audience on stage, in un-sequenced real time. This performance
technique is very uncommon in the genre of hip-hop today. However, it’s a wonder that such live
instrumentation isn’t more of a common practice as it not only allows for greater sonic flexibility
than that provided by a simple instrumental CD, but a more rousing, striking performance as well.

WrittenHouse’s sets vary from city to city based on the size of the

venue and the cultural aspects of each community they explore. While
the band has incorporated covers into their set, the majority of their
set consists of original material. Set times in support of national
touring acts have averaged roughly 40 minutes, while headlining set
lists have averaged closer to 75 minutes. In all, there is about
90 minutes of material.
