courses previously or speak even a small amount
of Arabic, please speak to your instructor and/or
the Language Coordinator about the possibility of

university requires a minimum of eight
hours of outside preparation per week.
However, the amount of time necessary to
be adequately prepared for class will vary
from student to student depending on a
number of factors.
Course Objectives
The purpose of this course is to provide the students with the
fundamental skills in: Listening, Speaking, Reading, Writing, and
Culture. The course is proficiency-based, implying that all activities
within the course are aimed at placing the learner in the context of
the native-speaking environment from the very beginning. The course
focuses on listening and speaking in a basic context so that students
can learn to initiate a conversation. Students learn frequently used
sentence patterns that allow them to communicate on a basic level
and which support their development in both reading and writing.
The course will also compare Arabic and American cultures. These
activities will help students understand the distinctive characteristics
