Composite Materials Take Home Test -2017A

Dead line: July/28 5 pm (printed format summited to my lab.)

1. Unidirectional B(4)/5505 Boron-Epoxy is an orthotropic material with the

following properties:
E1 = 204.0 GPa
E2 = 18.5 GPa
12 = 0.23
G12 = 5.59 GPa

For the plane stress case:

[a] Calculate Q11, Q22, Q12, Q66
[b] Calculate S11, S22, S12, S66
[c] Calculate U1, U2, U3, U4, U5
[d] Calculate V1, V2, V3, V4, V5

[e] Plot 11, 22, 12, 66, 16, 26 vs. [0 90]. Computer generated
graphs are highly recommended. Data should be plotted on 1 increment so that
locations variations are depicted accurately.

[g] Calculate (mathematically) the maximum and minimum values of
11, 22, 12, 66, 16, 26 for 0 90. Tabulate your results.

2. For any general state of plane stress, prove that

[a] In a linear elastic isotropic material, the principal directions of stress and
strain coincide.
[b] In a linear elastic orthotropic material, the principal directions of stress
and strain do not in general coincide.
[c] Find the relationships between the orthotropic material constants that
must hold for the principal directions of stress and strain to be the same.

3. For linear elastic isotropic materials in plane stress ( = = = 0), the

equation

= ( + )
1

relates the z-direction normal strain to the in-plane strains. Find an analogous
relationship for of a general off-axis orthotropic material in plane stress. What
does this relationship simplify to for the on-axis case ( = 0, 90), where the x-
y axes are aligned with the material symmetry directions?
