The Caracas Earthquake of 1967 was a seismic movement in Caracas and the
Central Coast (La Guaira, Vargas) on July 29, at 8:05 p.m., Venezuela time,
whose epicenter was the central coast, 20 km away from Caracas, which lasted 35
seconds. This mainly affected the areas of Altamira, Los Palos Grandes and the
Central Coast. After the earthquake, less intense aftershocks followed.
The Federal District was shaken by an earthquake of 6.5 to 6.72 degrees on the
Richter scale with a duration of 35 to 55 seconds. In the zone of Caracas it left a
balance of 2000 injured, 236 dead and material damages of more than 10 million
US dollars.
The disaster left more than 300 dead (236 dead registered), 2,000 injured, 80,000
people without housing and a material loss of 450,000,000 bolivars (10,465,116
USD at the time). Six buildings were destroyed, 40 buildings were declared
uninhabitable, 180 buildings suffered severe deterioration and an unquantified
number of houses, one and two floors, were damaged, especially in the facades,
walls of coatings, friezes, balconies, cornices and eaves.
