Back to the Future: A 21* Century Twist on 19" and 20" Century Paris Erin Bozek Music History and Literature IIT Dr. K. Fenton Draft 1 17 April 2017 Introduction/Thesis This analysis of Paris, France during the late 19" and carly 20 centuries will be formatted in a series of emails or letters. Since the background and style will be based on the Back to the Future film trilogy, the emails and letters will be written with the voice of the character of Doctor Emmett Brown, scientist and time traveler. With the help of the Flux Capacitor in his modified time-traveling DeLorean, Doc travels to France during the life of Camille Saint-Saens and studies his place in history and the significance of his works. He documents his travels in a series of emails and letters to his time-traveling companion Marty McFly, currently living in Hill Valley, California in 2017. As he meets and studies Camille Saint-Saens, Doc discovers how much of an impact he had on the history of music and how his music effectively serves as a prime example of the idea of French music during the late 19" and early 20 centuries. Dear Marty, If my calculations are correet, you will be receiving these letters on April 17", 2017, just after you saw the DeLorean struck by lightning. I know this is very similar to our incident back in 1985, but with this lightning strike, something tremendously strange happened. I am still working to understand the science of what happened, but when the DeLorean was struck by lightning in 2017, I was transported to a different time and a different place. The standard 1.21 igawatts of power needed to power the Flux Capacitor and travel through time may have been exceeded in such a way that I moved through both time and space. The experience was, as you would put it, “heavy.” Tam working to understand where and when I have landed. I am quite certain that I am in France, and the time period seems to be during the 19" century. Given the disaster that occurred when I landed in 1885 in Hill Valley and almost created a paradox that destroyed the universe when I met and fell in love with Clara, my plan for this trip will be unlike any other. I will not allow anyone here to know that I am a scientist. Instead, 1 will work as an artist or a musician in order to lay low and to potentially learn about musical history instead of scientific history. I will write as soon as I know more. I should have enough gasoline and plutonium with me to take three or four more trips through time, and my last trip will be my journey home to Hill Valley in 2017. Take care of Einstein while I am gone, and you will hear from me again very soon. Your friend in time, “Doc” Emmett L Brown
