Catholic Teaching Focus for this lesson read the Teacher Background Material relating to the Learning
Point and state the key teaching for this lesson

(The Churchs devotion to the Blessed Virgin is intrinsic to Christian worship.... The liturgical feasts... and Marian
prayer, such as the rosary ... express this devotion to the Virgin Mary. Catechism 970)

God draws people closer who remember and think about experiences through which God has shown love. The
experiences followers of Jesus remember most are from the lives of Jesus and Mary.

During this lesson students will come to understand how God draws people closer in the community through prayer.

Prior Knowledge

In previous lessons:
- Students focused on what a family is.
- What gifts we provide to our family.
- How to contribute to family life.
- How prayer brings family closer.

Catering for Learner Diversity

Extension For students who need an extra extension they can write an extra prayer of invocation or they can
decorate their prayer with images that represent their prayer.
Engagement For students who need extra engagement throughout the task, the EA can provide extra assistance
throughout the task or the student can use the iPad to write their prayer of invocation.
Special Considerations For students who need extra assistance they can use the iPad to write if they struggle
with writing or the teacher can act as a scribe while writing their prayer.

Evidence of Learning for Assessment and Reporting

The wonder questions, which got asked during Godly Play, act as an assessment piece for the teacher to see if the
students can reflect on a piece of information given to them such as the script story. It allows the students to put
visualise the story.

The prayer of invocation is the summative assessment which will be marked using a rubric this allows the teacher
to know if the students understood the provided examples and applied them by writing a prayer to Mary and her
saints.

A formative assessment is the discussion the students have on the mat when they have to explain what a prayer of
invocation is. This is a simple assessment where the teacher can write notes about what particular students are
saying.

Lesson Objectives state how the students will demonstrate their understanding of the learning point and the
skills they will use in doing this
1. Students will be able to verbally recall the Annunciation of Mary when Angel Gabriel visits Virgin Mary.
2. Students will be able to define what a prayer of invocation is.
3. Students will be able to write a prayer of invocation to Mary and the saints.

English Using English skills to write their prayer, they Mat time while students are listening to the Godly play
need to use proper spelling and grammar. they need to be attentive and no talking is allowed.
Arts The creative aspect of Godly Play which allows Work time students are to work independently and
students to interactive quietly.

Timing Steps of the Lesson Resources


Introduction

1. Gather the attention of the students as they transition into Religious

2. The teacher directs the students to come sit in a circle on the floor
and prepare for a godly play. Godly Play materials
3. The teacher sets up the Godly Play on the mat, ensuring all and script
students can see.
4. The teacher reads the script of the Godly play while demonstrating
with the figurines to describe the Annunciation of Mary.
5. Once the Godly Play is complete, the teacher must ask the
students wonder questions:
I wonder what part of the story was most important?
I wonder where, in this story, you can see yourself?
I wonder whether you could leave out a part of the story
and still have all the story we need?
I wonder what part of the story did you like the best?
6. To ensure the students were listening to the Godly Play and the
wonder questions, the teacher picks certain students to tell the
Annunciation of Mary in their own words.
7. Once the Godly Play is complete, students must return to their desk
and wait for further instruction.

8. Once the students have returned to their desk, the teacher explains
that in todays lesson they will be writing a prayer of invocation to

Mary and the saints in relation to the Godly Play they just heard.
9. The teacher writes the terms prayer of invocation on the board,
students have 2 minutes to find a definition of the term.

This acts as a mini challenge for the students and gives them a
purpose for their learning while also engaging them in the learning.
Students already have their iPads on the table so it does not take
much time out of the lesson.

10. Once at least one student has provided an answer, the teacher
must write what it means on the board. The teacher must go onto http://www.inspirational-

11. The task of the students is to write one prayer of invocation to Mary prayers.html
and her Saints.
12. The teacher provides decorative paper for students to write their decorative paper
prayer on.

Conclusion

13. Once the given time is up, students are to put their writing materials
down and sit in a circle on the mat.
14. Once all the students are sitting on the floor, the teacher asks for
students to volunteer to read out their prayer of invocation.
15. After the teacher has heard some of the prayers, they are then to
discuss the ways in which prayer brings the community together.

16. To conclude the lesson the teacher asks students to turn to their
partner and explain what a prayer of invocation is.

This allows the teacher to listen to the responses of the students


without them feeling that they are being assessed.

17. After the lesson has been concluded the students are to return to
their desk and wait for further instructions.
