If they're owned by root, you must reboot.

;)

If they are owned by another user, and you've been living right, you may be
able to su to that user (or login as that user) and do a
kill -9 -1

Please note that this will kill all processes associated with the user you
are at that time, so DO NOT DO THIS AS root or your box WILL go down.
