1 Introduction to Universe Connection Manager
What is Universe Connection Manager?

What is Universe Connection Manager?

Universe Connection Manager is a connection management tool that is
installed with Web Intelligence Rich Client . It allows an administrator to
create and edit connections for universes that are stored either locally or in
a shared directory. These universes do not have any security level, and are
accessed offline from the Central Management System.

folder, either on your local machine, or in a shared directory.

You can set the default universe folder. This is the folder
that contains the universes that appear on the Universes
tab. You can also select the universe structures that are

Using the New Connection Wizard

The New Connection wizard steps you through the process of creating a
connection. Use it to select a target data source, and configure the data
access driver.

Use the New Connection wizard to set the following parameters:

Parameter Description

• Use specified user name and

password: uses the login details as
authentication.
• Use Business Objects credential
mapping: the user is prompted for
a database user password associat-
ed with their BusinessObjects ac-
count to refresh a report. This is set
using the parameters dbuser and
dbpass. These are set at the admin-
istrative level. Refer to Business
Authentication mode Objects Enterprise Administrator's
Guide for information on setting up
this option.
• Use Single Sign On when refresh-
ing reports at View Time: When
selected, the username and pass-
word used to access the CMS are
automatically used as the database
login parameters. See the Business
Objects Enterprise Administration
Guide for informtaion on setting
Single Sign-On (SSO).

Configuration parameters dialog box

The Configuration Parameters dialog box contains parameters that you

can set to override default configuration options. These configuration
parameters override:
• Any corresponding parameters set in the cs.cfg file
• Any corresponding parameters set in the <driver>.sbo file.

You can set the following parameters:

From the drop down list, select the method

Connection pool mode to use to keep the connection active. Only
necessary if using a connection pool.

If you select Keep the pool active for in the

Pool timeout previous field, specifies the length of time to
keep the connection open.

Enter the maximum number of rows autho-

rized with each fetch.

If you enter 20, and your query retrieves 100

rows, the connection executes 5 fetches to
retrieve your data.

If you enter 1, array fetch is deactivated and

data is retrieved row by row.
Array fetch size
Note:
Deactivating array fetch is the safest way of
retrieving your data but row-by-row retrieval
slows down server performance. The greater
the value in the Array fetch size option, the
faster your rows are retrieved. You must, how-
ever, ensure you have adequate client system
memory.
The default value is 20.

Enter the size of the bind array that Connec-

tion Server uses before sending to the
repository. The bind array is the area in
memory where Connection Server stores a
batch of data to be loaded (sent to the
Array bind size
repository). When the bind array fills, it is
transmitted to the database. Generally, the
larger the bind array, the more rows (n) can
be loaded in one operation, and the better
your performance.

Specifies the number of seconds before a

Login timeout connection attempt times out and an error
message is displayed.

Custom Parameters dialog box

Use this dialog box to configure any custom configurations that apply to the
connection. The parameters that appear depend on the other parameters
that you have set. The parameters set here override:
• Any corresponding parameters set in the cs.cfg file
• Any corresponding parameters set in the <driver>.sbo file.

For information on the parameters, refer to the SBO file parameter reference
information.

To test a connection

You test a connection from the Universe Connection Manager start page.
1. Start Universe Connection Manager.
2. Click the Connection tab.
3. Click a connection in the "Available connections " list.

2. Click the Connection tab.
3. Select a connection in the Available connections list.
4. Click the Remove button.

The path to this folder is defined in the Options tab of the start up page.
1. Start Universe Connection Manager.
2. Click the Connection tab.
3. Select a connection in the Available connections list
4. Click the Assign button.
The Assign connection dialog box appears. It lists the universes available
in the default universe folder.
5. Click a universe in the list. This is the universe that you want to use the
new connection.
6. Click OK.
The connection is assigned to the universe. When a query is run in Web
Intelligence Rich Client, the returned data is from the data source for the
newly assigned connection.

check the SQL validity for the objects and structure of the a universe.

To check a universe

You can check certain SQL and structural components of a selected universe.
If you find errors, or problems that could affect the returned data, you need
to use Business Objects Designer to open and repair the universe.
1. Start Universe Connection Manager.
2. Click the Universes tab.
