The LGBTQ Community

The semester topic I have chosen and decided to go into depth with is the LGBTQ

community. I wanted to go with this topic because with the conversation of the LGBTQ

community there is also two sides, those who have no issues and accept the community and then

there is those who cannot grasp of concept and do not stand by it at all. With this topic having

two sides and it being quite controversial it will have good results and plenty of information on

both sides of the spectrum. Im also an advocate on how everyone should be treated equally no

matter who the person is so I want to gain even more knowledge about the community. I want to

take this knowledge and research and put it to greater use, like spread the word and fact about the

LGBTQ community.

One thing I know for sure about this topic is what I said in my opening paragraph, that is

can get very controversial and there are two sides to this community, those except and those who

cannot or will never except the members of the LGBTQ community. I know certain struggles

this community struggles with every single day of their life and a huge one is, will they be

excepted? That is a huge problem that why coming out can be extremely difficult for some

individuals. They also struggle with same sex marriage; some countries are so strictly against

same sex marriage so that some punishments can even lead to death. Our own United States

president recently banned transgenders to be excluded for the Army and that topic alone was

surfacing for a while. Another thing that I am well aware of is the bathroom situation, on how

some places do not allow transgenders to enter their chosen bathroom but the bathroom in which

corresponds to the gender given at birth. Bullying is also a huge issue, at this point you dont just

have to be a little kid you can be any age. Lastly there is the usage of the correct pronoun, people

want to be called by the correct pronoun and some people dont acknowledge that in some

circumstances.

I expect to learn more perspectives on both side of the LGBTQ. I expect to get more

insight on the reasoning why ones chooses one side over the other. Also get to know more

specific statistics on the overall community like the numbers of people that come out every year

all the way to the saddest part which is how many LGBTQ members are depressed or worse get

driven to commit suicide. I expect to gain so much knowledge and gather so much information

that I can hopefully see exactly how one feels being apart of the LGBTQ community.

Overcoming obstacles while doing research on the LGBTQ community is defiantly just

trying to be as open minded as possible. As of now my mind set and opinion is everyone should

be respected for their choices and their sexual orientation should not determine anything and as

much as it kills me to say its okay not to except the community I want to see and read first hand

on why a person would not agree with the being lesbian or gay. So that is a huge obstacle I need

to cross, be even more open minded.

I would say my topic is a very significant contemporary issue, compared to even 30 years

ago where the topic of the LGBTQ community was taboo and did not have as much stance as it

does now. Even very recently our President, Donald Trump just declared a ban on transgenders

joining the military. Meanwhile with our last President, Barak Obama during his term he made

same sex marriage legal. So these topics have been floating around for years and it can get very

controversial. The subject is very touchy and can get especially touchy in a work or school

environment. This topic is now widely used than other decades before, because more people are

either standing up for those in the community or making it heard that they cant stand the

community. More issues are arising more than ever but also more understanding is becoming

clear. With my research I want to discover just how much the numbers have changed within the

community and how many more people are comfortable with it verses from 50 years ago.

It is extremely important to inform others of my topic because people in the LGBTQ

community are all human like the rest of us, no one should be judged from their sexual

orientation. Most conservative people strictly go by the bibles rule that God once stated it was

wrong and I dont ever want to alter someones mind but with my research I want to show people

that there is nothing wrong with being trans, gay, etc. More and more members are struggling

with depression and suicide rates are going up because they are simply not being excepted for

who they are, if I can give some insight and shine some positive light on the LGBTQ community

I can hope to change some views and decrease the numbers of innocent individuals who are gone

too soon.
