Method Statement for Culvert Construction

1. Introduction and General Information

This method statement consists of construction of box and pipe culverts, Setting Out,
temporary diversion, excavations, surface preparation, blinding, reinforcement, formwork,
batching and mixing, quality control, placing of culverts, curing and backfilling and finishing
off.
1.1. Location of Works
The construction will occur at six different positions of existing culvert the coordinates of
existing stormwater culvert are as follow,
a) 304946.3S 302001.3E ( Existing pipe culvert to be replaced with box culvert)
b) 305025.8S 301955.1E (Existing pipe culvert)
c) 304947.0S 30202.6E (Existing pipe culvert)
d) 304946.5S 301950.6E ( Existing pipe culvert)
e) 304947.4S 301931.5E (Existing pipe culvert)
f) 304946.4S 301918.4E (Existing pipe culvert)
g) 304921.3S 301850.4E (Existing pipe culvert)

2. Method
A site store has been set-up stock materials including cement and reinforcing steel.
Mobilization of the plant and equipment will commence upon receipt of an instruction to
commence work on culverts. The main works will include activities such as temporary
diversion, setting out, excavations, blinding, reinforcement and formwork, batching, mixing
and casting, curing, backfilling and finishing off.
Safety precautions are to be adhered by ensuring that all plants are operated by authorized
operators. Besides all workers in the concrete section will be provided with safety gears
including dust masks, hand gloves, gumboots, helmets, goggles.
The material will be stored at the site store that has access control no unauthorised person
will be allowed. The material will be transported to and from site by the truck and will be
load and offloaded under the supervision of safety officer. All plant on site will be inspected
on the daily basis by the appointed health and safety officer and the plant that has oil leaks
will not allowed to operate onsite.
3. Setting Out
A Survey team consisting of one surveyor, two assistances will take levels and set out the
excavation area by use of pegs to mark points on the ground.
4. Temporary Diversion
Where the streams are flowing the temporary diversion will be done to allow the water to
continuing flowing during construction.
5. Excavations
Upon acceptance of the setting out by the engineer, excavations will be done by use of the
excavator to the satisfaction of the engineer.
6. Surface Preparation
The bed will be prepared maintaining required levels as per the original construction
drawings approved by the Engineer and requested from the Engineer to inspect and
approve the surface.
6. Blinding
After getting approval for bed preparation a team headed by a concrete foremen will start
with blinding the base to the specified thickness using materials complying with
specifications and of approved mix design to the acceptance of the engineer.
7. Reinforcement
Reinforcement will be laid and fixed by adhering to the bar bending schedule.
8. Formwork
Upon approval of the reinforcement formwork will be firmly fixed to the satisfactions of the
engineer.
9. Batching and Mixing
Batching to the approved concrete mix design will be done for concrete material that
comply with specifications. Upon the acceptance of batching concrete mixing will be done
by means of concrete mixer and concrete casted and compacted using poker vibrator.
10. Quality Control
All plant will be inspected on the daily basis for the duration of construction to ensure there
is no leaks of oils or diesel, plant that have leakage will be remove from site immediately.
Concrete cubes at acceptable batch intervals will be cast to monitor quality of concrete laid.
Similar procedures will be applied to construct the walls, end structures and finally the deck
all to the satisfaction and approval of the engineer.
11. Placing of Culverts
The culvert will be lifted by the Crane or Excavator and placed on top of constructed floor
slab under close supervision of safety officer and engineer.
12. Curing and Backfilling
A team lead by the concrete foreman will ensure proper curing of the structures with
adequate portable water.
After curing a team headed by the earthworks foreman will ensure that backfill with
specifications compliant materials is adequately compacted.
13. Finishing off
The diversion will be close off and material will be compacted to acceptable standard, all
excessive material will be taken away to the the disposal site.
