1. In a tire-treadwear study, a factor believed to influence the amount of wear is

the ambient temperature. The data below represent wear rates of one brand
of tires that were measured in an experiment. Each of the test runs was made
at a different temperature and all were made using the same vehicle. Perform
a comprehensive regression analysis on these data. Are the intercept and
slope coefficients statistically significant?

2. An engineer is designing an electronic controller for an engine. To find the

proper settings to maximize the engine operation, he collects data on engine
throttle as a function of engine torque with the ultimate goal of obtaining a
prediction equation for engine throttle. The data are given below for 24 engine
settings.

(a) Analyze the relationship between the amount of purchases and income.
(b) Fit the model to the data. Test whether the overall model is useful. Test whether each
predictor is useful. Use = 0.05

8. An important factor in maintaining employee satisfaction and productivity is adequate

compensation for an employees responsibilities. The personnel manager needs to
continually monitor salaries for certain job types, and should compare these salaries with the
salaries of the industry. Given the data below,

(a) Plot industry salary versus job points and actual salary versus job points on the same
graph.
(b) Find the least squares regression equation that relates industry salary y to job points x.
